That's "The Damned", a multi-part kit designed for Atlantic digital featuring some rather evil looking sci fi types.

They would be usable however you please.

Plastic Quar... oh my... For models that I never bought the first time around, I'm strangely excited by this release.

Not-Chaos-Cultists and Not-Traitor-Guard would be great sets. You need boat loads of them and noone does a good proxy, especially in plastic...
I hoped that such big sets would remain plastic and only small excentric pieces and bits go the STL route?

If “the Damned” STLs sell well enough surely WGA will see a potential for selling them in plastics. A lot less risky that way for them. But yeah, I will add that I think that set would sell very well in plastic.

But wouldn’t selling STLs weaken this potential?

I don#t imagine it would make a huge difference, there are still a huge majority of folk who don't 3d print

(and a whole bunch of those that do who would still buy plastic if it was available as shown if you look at the Reptillian Overlords social media where folk who own the space nam stuff are enthusiatic to have them in plastic)

I can throw my hat in the ring and say I would certainly buy that as a plastic kit, and that I will not bother to 3d print it, even though I have a 3d printer.

I might print it, but if I do, I probably won't re-buy it in plastic later.

I would rather buy it pre-made then to print it, as printing a 3D model is a Pain (for me).

I prefer to buy pre-made than printed.

I wanted to add, I tend to ignore STLs as I am not into 3d printing and I get annoyed seeing designs I like that I can not easily purchase. I have not had much luck buying things from a 2nd party printer at a price I can afford although admittedly I did enjoy speaking with the folks at My Mini Factory at Spiel in Essen.

STL only kickstarters for example annoy me for that reason. However, I can see where it might be good business for some companies. And of course it is good news for those that do 3d printing. I just can not get into another tangent hobby, my time is already stretched too thin.

I hope this will be good for companies like McDougall if there is a retailer license. Then one can buy the box + 3d bits, or a sprue + 3d bits.

Agreed. Same for me. Don't want another hobby, and definitely do not want to deal with the fumes and clean up hassle. More full HIPS kits please, and save the STL files for specialty bits.

Now this is a good option. If such retailer licenses are made available, then I can buy said prints from someone who has the necessary equipment. While I've yet to buy from McDougall, I've made notes for some 3D print purchases from him. Just waiting on some WGA releases.

McDougal seems well set up to capitalize on this. Hope it works out for him. I can see myself ordering a box along with prefit/intended 3d printed conversion parts.

1. It will work out for me. It may have some side effects, but all changes do.

On the current discussion about the STL's being a bad business practice/idea, I'm going to quote one James Westwood from the Wargames Atlantic facebook page, who put thoughts to paper in a better way then I could

A lot of people really don't understand just how much it costs to get the tooling done to produce plastic moulds. Its not a matter of digital instead of plastic, it will largely be a case of digital being the only way some of these models will ever be able to exist. Digital _at least_, rather than digital _instead of_.

The cream of the crop showing up in hard plastics will just be a bonus. The reality is, as consequence of the digital format being a thing, we will probably end up with more hard plastics in the long run as WGA are able to better gauge the demand for different types of figures. Between the polls and keenly studying how the STLs go, WGA will be able to have their ear to the ground better than ever.

Yep tooling will always be the bottleneck. More STLs get made every month than hard plastic tools get made in a decade.

Wow would have thought cultists would have been on the WA list a long time ago, plenty of money to be made there I would have thought! More so than *another* regular-space-army-trooper variety.

In terms of plastic kits, I would assume there would be some reservation about replicating kits currently in production. I'm sure WGA would make a good product with it's own merits but with Northstar already producing a plastic cultist kit, that could seriously impact the projected sales of a WGA offering.

Northstar's cultists are fantasy cultists for Frost Grave (great kit, I have a box of them on my desk now). Plenty of room for the Sci Fi army of Evil in the market. Hopefully the STLs will do well enough to convince WGA to put these in plastic.

Yeah GW has 2 kits now but 1 is 10 guys for $45, the other is 10 dudes (plus a commissar and ogre) for $60. Not really in direct competition.

Here's an example of a group of parts designed to work with an existing plastic set - in this case a modernization set for our Afghan Warriors. You'll see lots of things like this that will give you more options for the plastic sets. And, remember, just because it appears within Atlantic Digital doesn't mean it won't also be tooled for hard plastic.
