The Night Attacker strategic trait says you may choose to use the Night Fighting rules and if so there is "no need to roll - it is Night for the first turn".

Does this mean the first game turn, or would it, by RAW, mean the first player turn only?

Player turn. Game turns are always explicitly referred to as such in the rules, but 'turn' and 'player turn' are considered synonymous. (See page 9 of the 6th edition rulebook)

However, the rule has us reference the actual Night fighting rules, telling us that there is no roll for it, and that it applies for the first turn. Under night fighting we find out that when it says turn under the warlord trait, it means game turn. If we do not reference the actual night fighting rules the rule about not rolling a die has no meaning, and would have no reason to be there. That and the fact that the rule book does not assume we know rules by the time we play a few games, so we'd technically have to reference night fighting to find out what it does.

RAW your right, but i seriously think they left "game" out by accident.

Yeah, i agree; I think they left out the word 'game' by accident too given how the nightfighting rules normally work.

I don't think so. i think this is for games where night fighting is not in the game. So in essence if you are second then you can choose night fighting to place your enemy at a disadvantage. think necron solar pulse.

Problem is, GW doesn't give a rat's backside about missions that aren't theirs, and all their missions have night fighting. GW doesn't think of stuff like that, look at the Finecast they rushed into production, then tell me honestly that they think about the players beyond the money they spend.

sorry, I didn't mean to imply different missions from those in the brb. I meant those instances where the NF roll is 1-3, then this trait could be an advantage if you go second.

The thing with this warlord power is that if it's used, then the roll doesn't even take place. It has to be announced before the roll is made, because it bypasses the need to roll. The roll cannot be made then announce that it's night fighting first turn. At least that's what I take from it when it says, "there is no need to roll."
