Stealthy Dark Angels Scout with Shotgun




Being digested by a Tyranid.

Hello all, I'm relatively new to Warhammer, having started the hobby around a month ago, as of now I am 0-2-1 and I'm at the point where I want to buy the old codex to help me build my army, but with the new one around the corner supposedly I don't want to waste my money (this hobby is expensive enough already )

This is my list, recently supplemented by the new starter:

HQ:
1 Company Master Balthasar (Power sword and combi-plasma)
1 Librarian Turmiel
1 Interrogator-Chaplain Seraphicus (quite handy, crozius that gives +2 S and has concussive. other than that, frak and krak grenades, and litanies of the dark angels, which lets me re-roll hits and wounds if I'm facing CSM.)

Elite:
1x Veteran squad (SS/PS, PM/PP, Plasma gun and two bolters)
1x Deathwing termy squad (SB/PS, AC/PF, SB/CF, 2 SB/PF, A.K.A what comes in the set)

Troops:
1x 5 man tac squad (bolters)
1x 10 man tac squad (Plasma gun here, plasma cannon there, plasma pistol on the sergeant, plasma-plasma-plasma.)

Fast Attack:
3x ravenwing bikes (twin-linked boltguns as usual, one of them has a plasma gun.)


So far I have a pretty standard list I think, I need some transports that's for sure. A friend has some termies he picked up a while back I might take off his hands(haven't seen them yet, hopefully some of them have LC's or SS/TH)
Thank you all for looking, and hopefully offer me some insight as to what direction I should take my army from here(I.E what to buy).

if you can get someone for you local store who would like get another dark vengeance starter for the chaos units, what would be the best. if you don't have the rulebook from the starter get that one too. the starter box is worth buying just for the paperback rulebook

about building an army you may choose
2 HQ
6 Troops
3 Fast attack
3 Elites
3 Heavy Support

This is what you could build from two starters and which brings you into the 1250-1500 range. If you could get another terminator model and modify him to be Belial, Master of the Deathwing, you will have more than enough Troops. Maybe a tank like predator and a dread to fill up the point to 1500.

Due the starter provides you with Terminators and bikes, you need to decide if you want to do a Deathwing a build with lots of terminators or a raven wing with lots of speeders and bikes. If you go for the Ravenwing you should get the Battleforce with the speeder and the bikes. Battleforce and any Starter is a good deal maybe play some games with the first starter to get a feeling.

Thank you for the advice, I'll get a few more games under my belt to get a feel for my army, As I said, my friend at the local FLGS has some termies and tacs in addition to other things, I might buy some close quarter termies and mix them with the ones I already have for some balanced squads, and see if he'll let me take 5 tacs so I'll have two squads worth. And I'm sure a few people have some extra mini-rulebooks I could trade for. Or I could just cough up the cash for another starter


I have a feeling that I'll like deathwing, since in the only game I've played with my new models (Myself vs Necrons with imotekh vs tyranid horde) the deathwing's deepstrike helped a ton, until they got shot by a night scythe that is.

just started my self, am playing lots of 750 games and fine tuned my Grey Knights. 750 is fast and cost less money. If you get to know the rules and other armies I think you will know how you want to play your DA. The new starter is nearly unbeatable in price

So have fun testing and brewing.

I would consider Riflemen dreads if you can, really good fire support, and competitive if you plan on tournaments or regular games. You'd be amazed on how many vehicles you'd be able to pop. And i agree, the vengence starter set is worth the buy.

As far as transports go, I'd look into a drop pod. Even if you only use one, it can work as a wonderful distraction / objective grabber if used properly in 6th Ed. As long as you place them 10" from the board edge you won't get a mishap, and the guys get a 6' disembark and get to fire at full strength. If you build one squad melta heavy you can pop a tank near an objcective / cover, then go to ground / shoot out of cover till reinforcements arrive. Depending on who you play against, these guys are likely to die, so keep em cheap and plentifull. They tend to be a massive thorn in your enemies side and a huge distraction. Most players tend to over-react to them, and will spend the next round firing every weapon they can at them, giving your main army plenty of time to move across the board. This should work well with fast Ravenwing armies, and could be a plus for Deathwing as well.

My thought is get 2 dark vengence sets and then wait for the new codex...

Out of the box:

3 HQ choices.

2 Tactical squads: 210 each
2 DW: 250 each
1 RW 6 Bikes: 250

To play now, I would make a Belial model so the Deathwing are troops.

Belial plus what you get is 1300 points.

Now I would add 2 Typhoon Land speeders leaving you at 1450.

Truly I would get the two and wait though. Hopefully the DA costs will be brought into line with the other SM codexes. However I expect that some major changes will take place so don't get heavily set into anything.

For instance, it is rumored that Belial will no longer be required and Deathwing will just be a troop choice. So don't get heavily set on anything beyond your troops at this point in time.

The riflemen dreads are not available to DA. At the moment they have access to cheap BS5 dreads as such I would reluctant to bring TL weapons, though TL is good at antiflyer duties which DA struggle.

DV isn't a good start to dark angels right now. I would just wait or think about allies in the time being.
