Subject: Handgunners or crossbowmen? Hmmmm

So i wanna decide what to assemble my models as before i assemble them (of course haha)
Handgunners tear through armor better but wont really be able to fire if i go first.
But Crossbowmen are still S4 and have a 30" range so first turn they're firing away.
Just wanna get some opinions like i usually do from Dakka. Failed to let me down yet guys

Crossbowmen are generally the more all rounded choice.
Handgunners are usually better if your meta involves lots of armour, and are a close tie if they are the better dwarf handgunners.
I'd suggest Crossbowmen over Handgunners, as the longer firing period does give them a few more points over handguns.

Depends on what armies you expect to fight more often and what you already have in your army I'd think.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

Crossbowmen are the default pick, for being able to shoot first turn, and get short range at 15" rather than 12". Handgunners are the specialist "my opponent has a lot of 4+ or greater saves" choice.
Neither are optimal choices compared to the artillery though, if you can fit it in, a cannon or helblaster will do the same job only better in every possible way.
Core is for knights and state troops.
Archers are the "winner" support missile choice in 8th edition, having been reduced in points whereas the crossbowmen and handgunners rose... they won't kill anything tough, but that's what the artillery is there for!

Neither are great, but I've found when I take handgunners I miss the extra range of the crossbows a lot. On the other hand, I don't often miss the armour penetration when I take crossbows, as I'm generally only doing nuisance damage anyway.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

The extra 6" range on crossbows wont matter much, the extra 3" short range bracket is more important.
