This was a 1500 point match between me and an Ork army. This was his first match, and my third official match. I'm new to 6th edition and my opponent is new to 40K in general. The bat rep is coming, please feel free to comment (constructively) on either of our tactical decision or lists. I'm sure we messed up quite a few rules as well. With that, give us your vote and enjoy! (this is also my first bat rep, so go easy on me )

Edit: I have no idea why the image looks like this. If anyone has a clue please let me know
I was excited to get started, hoping for a win but wanting my opponent to get hooked. We set up our map and rolled for psychic power and warlord traits (listed in army lists). We got the Crusade mission w/ 5 objectives and Dawn of War deployment. I won the roll of and elected to go first. I deployed on the bottom table edge. I put my scouts on the right objective in my ruins ( with camo cloaks and bolster ruins a 2+ cover save ) and the left objective in the woods. The Landspeeder I nestled behind the trees. I put the Rhinos on either side of the hill to run for objectives of screen my line. My Pred and the two Thundfires went on the hill and prepared to dig into some Orks. I reserved my Libby/Termie squad. The Orks deployed with the Big Gunz behind the ruins in the top left, and then arrayed across the rest of the board. The stormboyz reserved to deep strike later.
Turn 1
Worried about the damage those gunz could bring with a hit, I dispatched my Landspeeder flat out to get in their face. In hindsight, a S5 weapona gainst a T7 arty unit wasn't going to do much, but it was a distraction until I could bring bigger guns to bear. That was the only movement I did that turn. With my shooting I wanted to pop as much of his transports as I could. My left TFC and the Pred combined to explode a Trukk on the left (first blood!) with 2 Orks dying in the explosion, but passing their pinning test. The right TFC opened fire on another Trukk, immobilizing it and destroying its big shoota. My scouts on the right opened fire on the big gunz, which were in range. The result? All missed . My scouts in the trees managed to kill one of the 'ard boyz that had their Trukk blown out from under them. Oh, and both objective ended up being a Gravity Generator, which I liked immensely considering my opponent.
Spoiler:
A decent start, but I'd have a long way to go. There's not much my opponent can this turn. His trukks floor it for my line and his big gunz take a couple of shots at my snipers on the left. One die hits, two scatter off (one ended up hitting my Rhino to no effect The scouts took a couple of wounds from the shot, but luckily make their cover saves. Here's the map at the end of turn 1
Spoiler:
VP: SM 7, Ork 0
Turn 2
Both the Libby and my Stormtalon come in. The libby unit goes on the right so it can try to seal off that Trukk bearing down on my ruins. Stormtalon heads off toward the nice group of enemies on the left. My objective this turn was the same as turn 1: Kill the boxes on wheels and take as many Boyz with them as possible. My landspeeder continued its movement up the left flank and was able to get in range of its flamer. I moved my Rhinos forward now that I had a better idea of where he was moving his units.
The landspeeder gets some lucky rolls and kills two Grots. I felt that the Trukk all the way on the right flank was the immediate threat, so I opened my shooting by point my Preds buns at it and letting loose. Lascannons fire first and both penetrate, wrecking it on the first damage roll. The Boyz bail out., he takes the risk to place them mostly in front of the Trukk. The boyz are closer to reaching my line, but dreadfully exposed. I let him know this by turning one of my Thunderfires onto him. Three hits and a 2" scatter onto more Boyz sees 8 wounds. The unit is decimated, but he passes his leadership test with a double 1! My other Thunderfire take aim at the Trukk that moved up on the right flank, between the building and the tanks. It immobilizes it and kills one of the exposed Boyz on a scatter. My Stormtalon opens fire on the Looted Wagon, but rolls nothing but Scouts take shots at the mob on the far right. I leave one ork who breaks and books it for the table edge.
Spoiler:
The Orks have definitely been bloodied this turn. With his trukks out of action his Boyz have a long way to go under fire. He tries to move his wagons and Boyz through the gap on the left. This is when we realize how much that area has become a chokepoint as he tries to squeeze past a busted trukk. The mob on the right move up and shoots at my termies. I easily save both wounds. His face when he learned they get a 2+ save was something like . Shooting from the gunz and vehicles does less than squat. His mob charges the Librarian's unit, but in possibly the worst roll of the night, falls short with a 2" charge roll. Luckily for him my terminators don't have any ranged weapons, so no overwatch.
Spoiler:
Not shown on the picture, but his units loaded into the immobilized trucks bailed out
VP: SM 7, Ork 0
Turn 3
I really felt that at this point the game was mine to lose. Although I had the flexibilty to go for some of his arty or wagons, i decided to try and clean up the exposed Orks before they could close. The Stormtalon moves towards the right flank. My Pred completely misses one of his wagons. My Thunderfires and the Stormtalon greatly increase the number of dead Orks on the map. An entire unit of Burnas and 7 'ard boys fall under the cannonade. My Librarian, itching for assault, cast Enfeeble on the Boyz mob that tried to charge last turn. It succeeds, and the assault is on. My Librarian challenges the Nob, who accepts. We decide to finish the duel after the rest of the combat. My three LC terminators kill 8 of the boys on the initial charge. The boyz don't even hit, and the 2 TH/SS finishes off the mob. The challenge ends up doing...absolutely nothing. We both rolled crap. The Nob manages to pass its LD test, so the combat continues (At this point it was getting late, so i'm not sure if we used the right rules here, I may have reverted to 5th ed).
Spoiler:
[spoiler]
Bloodied and battered, he moves what he can. His deep striking Stormboyz once again fail to come to his aid. Shooting scatters off of nearly every target. One scatter lands a high strength round on my predator, but luckily no damage done. One shot does stun my left Rhino, though. The Nob gets quickly finished off in the assault, i consolidate 2". Also, turns out I didn't get a screen cap for this turn.
VP: SM 7, Ork 0
Turn 4
At this point we both knew that the game was technically over as he didn't really have enough Troops to hold objectives over two turns. However, even "garbage time" experience is valuable to both of us as rookies, so we kept on. My Stormtalon zoomed off of the map, going into ongoing reserves. My left Rhino moves towards the artillery and the objective objective. No other movement as there really isn't much of a point in doing so. My predator Explodes one of his Looted Wagons on the first shot. My cannons finish off the last of the 'ard boys moving about (and with that goes the last of his troops).
[spoiler]
His Stormboyz finally come in and deepstrike right next to my scouts outside of the ruin. Rolling a hit on the scatter, he elects to use their special rule to assault the scouts. He's willing to risk losing up the 3 stormboyz to "crash landings" than try to withstand the shooting that I'd give them next turn. With their move through cover warlord trait the make the assault easy. The boyz in the mob lay a solid 28 wounds on my 5 man scouts! Needles to say that with only a 4+ armor save to help, the unit got wiped off of the board. He consolidates towards my librarian's unit. I think he was hoping for more than would happen next turn.
Spoiler:
VP: SM 7, Ork 0
I finally decide to disembark the right flank Tac squad and bring some grunts into the action. Up until now my troop units have done little but watch, as my heavy support has almost single-handedly destroyed the Orks. The predator wounds one stormboy. the Tac squads MM misses, but their PG, blowing himself up in the process, takes another one down. A boltgun barrage takes a few more down. My libby again succesfully casts Enfeeble (he nearly periled :whew and charges. When the carnage ends, one lonely stormboy makes for the hills.
Spoiler:
With the clock ticking past midnight and us both having work in the morning, we decided it was time to end the game. The remnants of the Ork army retreated and the Space Marines took the field almost unscathed! Final VP count: SM 7 (2 objectives, First Blood), Ork 0.
Analysis
I'm sure every can tell that this was a game by two new players. My opponent has some good instincts, but he's very hindered by not really knowing the general rules or his codex. I know little about the Orks, but he wasn't nearly as aggressive as he should have been. I also was getting very lucky with my rolls early on. even with 5+ rolls to penetrate, I did so more than I glanced. To top it off, only one of my vehicle damage rolls resulted in less than a weapon destroyed. Our terrain was set up using the random terrain creation rules in the rulebook. The weirdest sequence of dice rolls I've ever seen, though, was when we rolled 6 d3s and ended up with 6 . Tactically, I think he should have avoided the open ground in the middle and flanked. If any of you have any constructive criticism to share (especially commanders of the greenskins) please do so, I'd love to help him learn quickly. I hope you enjoyed the read (despite the issue with the screenshots)!

Thanks. He did. I never mentioned it but he's actually my brother-in-law, so I've been able to sway him to 40K pretty solidly. I have hopes to get my two nephews involved when they are old enough. I told him before hand as well that the game was probably going to get messy. My first game didn't go well for me at all (fought BA, it got ugly). The game was last night and this morning I was able to show him the battle report from my first game and showed that I made all of the same mistakes that he did, SM style. We're hoping to get some unofficial practice in tonight (run through stuff like assaults, rules we aren't sure of, etc.).
Automatically Appended Next Post: I also encouraged him to get onto Dakka and starting reading at least the Ork related materials. I think if he put a list on here and got some experienced players putting in thoughts it would really help as well.

Yeah. I'm actually going to point him towards your "how to school a noob" thread (or whatever it's called) to try to teach him up.

I'd used them before in 5th and got some good results, but they were too weak. The new Arty rounds has toughened them up, though. They shot marvelously, too. Probably dished out the most wounds of all of my units, too.

Maybe play a small battle say 500 pts and just take tacs. Let him get into your units as he never really got to see orcs in action here.
I'm going to make sure to do that next time. he wanted a taste of a larger point value, so we settled on 1500. I had planned to not be so aggressive, but once I saw the first Ork disintegrate into a red mist I got a bit...carried away.

Yep TFC are good fun if your are the marines player
Brutal piece of gear and a beautiful compliment to tac squads with a lascannon or other solid AT capability, raider, pred etc
In my book the small template far better than single vindi pie plate, which is useless as the enemy gets close. Also the lower AP on the TFC gives marine players a better ability to employ danger close as if it does scatter we get 3+
Can craft some very effective gunlines using the units you took here, as you saw yourself you beat him using perhaps 1000 pts of your 1500. That is a demonstration of marine potential in my book.
Aurora SMs in 5th Ed (18 wins, 3 draws, 13 losses)
it was ballsy though, going for 1500 points for the first game.

If you remember Atlas, I think I suggested a 1,000 point game at first. 2,000 was fun, but it was a bit overwhelming. I forgot some special rules due to the size. We'll scale it down next time.

lol yes you were. Nah, 750pts is a good level for just getting a grasp on the rules, but 1500pts is pretty viable too. Just more stuff to keep track of really.
As for the report, I'm not sure why the pictures ended up so... odd. I think you have to save the screenshots as "(whatever).png" or they won't work properly. Orks do best if they're really aggressive, and KFF helps to keep them fairly safe. I'd also recommend that they use terrain pieces to block line of sight and keep safe that way.
Check out this link, too. It's Andilus beating Atlas ( ) over the course of several battles. It's using the old rules, but you can pick up some of the things that helped me in my first game. You can also see the nids in action as you mentioned testing them out, too. Just don't comment, it's so old you could get Mod-hammered.
Andilus - I'll remember to make sure they save as a PDF. That's probably what caused the red coloration. At first I thought I may have succumbed to the Red Thirst, then I remember I don't play BA.

Haha to be fair, I beat him after the fourth game cause we finally got Annihilation he actually rolled it, and then quickly rolled for something else but I called him out on it lol
But yeah, that red screen, I'm unsure. I like to think that when you fully succumb your vision flashes white with rage with Red Thirst.
