Where does the energy to sustain a force capable of overwhelming an entire planet come from? As far as I've read it takes either warp storm or intervention by one of the chaos gods to sustain an army that big.

The Psyker acts a gateway, they are bright lights inthe warp and the fact that they can channel warp power allows for a deamon to access the material world. Once a gateway is open, the chaos and bloodshed caused by the outbreak will power the continued use of the gate and the deamons present.
