Where the sun crosses the field of blood.

Do you have any lists you want to try or base a force around that are slightly odd (in lack of a better word). If yes, then let's discuss them here!
For example/ To start of, for example I have finally figured out what direction to go with my Shasvastii. I was thinking like this:
Noctifier Lieutenant.
Noctifier.
Noctifier w/ Missile Launcher.
Malignos.
Malignos.
Malignos w/ Sniper.

And then some other stuff like Speculos and Cadmuses.
Do you think this would be viable? How would I even go about and use this army? I assume I would deploy the Missile Launcher and Sniper in hidden Deployment whilst I deploy the other units as TO markers.

One that I've been wanting to do for a while is:

1x Keisotsu
1x Kempei w/ Chain of Command
2x Oniwaban
1x Ninja w/ EXP CCW
1x Ninja Sniper
1x Shinobu Kitsune Lt.
1x Saito Togan

For a 300 point list it is a little light on the orders and prior to revealing anything it has all of two models on the board. But I think it would make for an interesting opening exchange. The general idea is that the Kempei eats LoL in the first turn and allows me to make the most of the six TO camo minis. Shinobu and another Oniwaban can set up in the same place and activate together so I can play shell games with combined orders when they move as a single camo marker (this will make my Lt. harder to spot, especially as my reading of the CoC rules and the FAQ seem to indicate that once my Lt. reveals I don't have to bring it to anyone's attention when the Kempei hands the reigns back over).

The basic idea is to let the enemy over extend since he has no idea what the hell you are fielding or where most of it is. Then when he presents a juicy target (or three) you reveal something nearby and kill it quickly. The opening turn should hopefully see a fair chunk of enemies dead and surrounded. From there let them act and punish them with further reveals.

If nothing else this list would be hilarious in practice, but utilizing it well is a complete up hill battle considering the low order count and multitude of order-hungry units. It would also wilt if the enemy has a large number of visors (avoid Neo Terra and ISS lists!). But considering my normal group has no NT players and I play both Nomads and Yu Jing/ISS it would probably work out well with my group's meta. And every game after they will be paranoid about TO units (which is why in the next game I'll field a Tiger-heavy list just to screw with 'em!).

Edit - Incidentally, this would be fun as an attacking list in Prisoner P-09 if I fit a few specialists in to it (it has at least two, three once the Kempei gets out of the deployment zone).

I want to try a link team of Moblots, sure they are overpriced and you can only take 4 max in FRRM - but there must be a benefit somewhere right?!

Especially as I'm so used to my Loup-Garou link team laying down fire from a safe distance.

Oooo all TO! Very cool. I wish we could take more Noctifers. The cheapest TO troop in the game. The speculos would be a good too but it's already expensive list. You are going to be order starved. But fun!

Point of fact...

Metros aren't "civilians". They're militia volunteers!

But, I have an alternate "Strike Force" list floating around saved as well.

Are these lists going to be game winning or amazing? Probably not...outside of looking awesome when done thematically.

I like the fact you are not using a metro just because you want to keep the theme ?
Any reason why your 2nd chasseur is not Forward Observer ?

Here's a similar list I had in mind

Moblot link team pushing the assault to mid board
Chasseurs deploying with mine markers to mess the opponent's mind =P
And drop in for even more confusion among the ranks

That's 300 points, with six TO camo, two Combat Jump and one Impersonator.
I really wish I could get a sphinx in there somewhere

That's actually a pretty good list. 9 orders for 300pts is pretty good for all that TO goodness. I put your list in and found you can upgrade a Malignos to have Monofilament mines and be right at 300pts, 6swc!

Ahh, that sounds great!
How do you think I should run the list (as I might actually buy into this - I love TO camo!) All deployed as TO markers? Or all in hidden deployment?
Beginning the game with only and Speculo might be a little odd...

I think I would put 2-3 in hidden deployment and put the rest in TO marker
That way, you won't get order starved and your opponent will still have a hard time against the -6 modifiers

Unfortunately, this doesn't work. Chain of Command only works if your Lt. is knocked out or killed, not if they aren't on the board in the first place. Others have pointed this out to me when I floated similar ideas. See the wiki for exact wording.

Also, the Kempei can't "hand the reigns back over". You can only nominate a new Lt. when the current one has been killed or knocked unconscious. You cannot do it voluntarily.

Beyond rules issues, low-order lists may seem like a good idea, but they're really deeply unplayable. Few concealed units can truly capitalize on AROs well enough to play reactively and reveal in the enemy turn, then generate orders in their own. Units that can do well in ARO generally have either multi-weapons, contenders, or panzerfausts and the like. Reacting with CC is a pretty hard to do, as you have a 2" intercept range so placement must be perfect. Given, with this many ninjas maybe you could make that work once or twice against an army that's willing to charge into danger heedlessly. Against a smart or cautious opponent you'd have a real problem though.

On the flipside if you reveal them actively, they eat the few orders you have (as you already pointed out yourself).

Now, a ninja-heavy list that either has lots of cheerleaders (acting as both orders and as bait to lure enemies into CC or into reactive sniper fire) or that deploys most of the TO guys as markers works pretty well. You still have a decent amount of orders, and can use the concealed troops to play headgames. The troops still in hidden deployment can defend the markers from visor troops, mitigating your weaknesses quite a bit. It's a fun game to play. Incidentally, you can also do this in a vanilla list and add a Hac Tao into the mix to get even nastier reactive fire.

Oh, and the bit about mixed marker/hidden deployment also applies to the Shasnasty list folks are discussing here. Use your hidden guys to ambush Sensor/visor troops trying to root out your markers.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Ah yes, I see I glossed over the dead/unconscious bit. Oh well still possible to start a few off as markers instead to keep confusion going. Overall it isn't a huge loss and the list can at least make use of the Kempei since the rest of the list will need to play aggressive to have a chance of winning.

As for the rest of your comments, I'm not exactly an Infinity newb in that regard (I have been playing since release), I know low-order lists are difficult to work with. But I think calling them unplayable is a bit hyperbolic. They simply require a different tactical paradigm than the usual list. TO models can be wasted in ARO but this misses that the enemy can walk right past them and present a juicy back arc and little possibility of retaliation due to hidden deployment. If such an opportunity doesn't present itself in ARO then you can still just wait for the active turn.

Playing with a low initial order count is something that is definitely doable in my experience. It will take being flexible though, there is no one size fits all strategy and you have to be ready to change your plans depending on overall setup and initiative. If you lose initiative then you have to make sure you squeeze the most out of the deployment advantage (this can be huge as your enemy will have no idea where half your army is). If you score first turn then it may be a better idea to use less hidden deployment so that you have a more full order pool. In either case neither the Shavastii list or the Ninja list are technically low order. Their actual order pool depends on how they are used and the factors that would limit their order pool are all under the player's control. Just because you don't use Hidden Deployment on all of them doesn't necessarily mean you wasted any points. As with everything there are upsides and downsides to using specific abilties.

Depending on initiative and deployment the two TO-heavy lists will play entirely different from game to game. I've played enough AD/TO heavy lists in the past to know that it is not only possible to win with them but that when played well they can make your opponents second guess every last move they make. But then, I've always liked Infinity for making psych-war a valid tactic.

Either way, this is the odd ideas thread, who cares if an idea is good or not? :p

I agree. I'd possibly choose the Missile launcher and sniper to do hidden. The rest would be markers.

Oooo! how about taking out the 2xCadmus guys and add in a Sphinx!?

Edit: Of course I had to try it! Not nearly as usable as the first one but fun

Why not?

This one is just straight up wacky and spurred on by the rumours of a Wu Ming box. Behold (and I almost never create lists with two combat groups, so this is extra odd for me), the Imperial Service Penal Legion!

300 points,

Group 1
2x Celestial Guard
1x Celestial Guard w/ Kuang Shi Control Device
1x Celestial Guard Lt.
3x Wu Ming w/ Boarding Shotguns
1x Wu Ming w/ HMG
1x Wu Ming
1x Kuang Shi w/ Boarding Shotgun

Group 2
1x Celestial Guard w/ Kuang Shi Control Device
6x Kuang Shi

This is the first time I've ever attempted a horde list (not usually a fan of 'em) but I like the aesthetic of it. A berzerk zombie horde of ex-dissidents surging forward around a cold, methodical group of Snake Pliskens in powered armour. The basic idea is just let the Kuang Shi rush forward and provide distractions for the Wu Ming team to exploit. The Wu Ming team will act as a swiss army knife of options. The MR/LGL can be used for long-range bombardment or just for a barrage of templates in direct fire as well as the usual uses of a 5-man fire-team MULTI Rifle (DA Rifle or poor-man's Feuerbach). The HMG can be the general long-range direct-fire weapon for the group. Meanwhile the two smoke, lobbing CGs can provide copious amounts of cover using the bodies of Kuang Shi to provide more inroads for the rest of the horde.

It also has the fun feature of only using linkable units in it so it can be very flexible if I decide to use it outside of its original purpose.

But overall it is mostly just an excuse to field as many criminals (and head-bombs!) in one list. I figure they're bad enough dudes to rescue the President's daughter.

Incidentally I could replace the MR/LGL Wu Ming with another HMG (for redundancy) and fit the eighth Kuang Shi in there. But I like the flexibility of the LGL in there (and it makes more use of the Kuang Shi Biolocator). I can basically use

If you are using Cadmus, you need Naish Sheskin =P Drop your Cadmus close to her and send little Achilles to the fight =)
Might take a couple orders to do but still fun =P
