Hey i painted all my models when i was alot younger and the quality is well, least to say shameful.I would really like to repaint them and that would involve respraying with the black undercoat, now will this lose detail in the models and make them look bad or cause any damage or is there anything i should know before redoing this?

Id recommend striping them, just let them soak in detol (the brown anti septic stuff) for a few hours then you can scrub the paint off with an old toothbrush.

these are all plastic models, that will not affect the plastic right ? and will not affect re applying paint?

No, it shouldn't effect it at all but and you should come up with virgin plastic so it will be like a clean slate just be careful about staining and if it is stained dont worry you wont lose any detail. Have fun!

I've just stripped a whole load of plastic models myself and they're fine. They smell of detol a bit after but it goes away, I've no idea if you can strip resin models with it so best asking someone else if you're planning to strip any finecast or FW stuff.

Yea for me the plastic was always stained the original colour i sprayed it with but it doesn't effect repainting.

I've stripped about 1000 points of Space Marines with Dettol. make sure to use some protective gloves because it will dry your skin out horribly.

Beware of the fumes when using the dettol, it can be hazardous to your health. As soon as the dettol gets sludgey, replace it with new stuff as all it will do is make the remaining paint and the models sticky. I find it best if you get a toothbrush and gently scrub the models while they are submerged, you get more paint off quicker that way. Watch your eyes if you do it this way.
Buy rubber gloves if you value your skin!!!

+1 to Dettol, Have stripped 1500 points of Marines with it, plastic resin and metals all fine.

Soak anything to be stripped (bases too if you want, any sand or flock will come up too as the pva looses its grip)
soak for 48 hours plus to be on the sure side.

Grab an old tooth brush and scrub the mini's while submerged as has been said, but also have a pot of clean fresh dettol on hand for a secondary rinse. DO NOT introduce water untill the mini is totally free of paint. This may take multiple rinses in fresh dettol. Maybe multiple soaks for especially caked on paint.

I had a pot of lukewarm water and was throwing them into that as each bit was clean, then at the end refreshing the water in that tub serveral times before drying the bits off. Be sure to wash the dettol off before repainting the stuff strips the paint off.. new paint surely will not stick to it.

Most of my figures also dissasembled, I didnt mind. but be aware that less than perfect joins will come apart while in the drink.

Have fun repainting your figures as many times as you want.

Edit; its the original Dettol anti septic liquid that you want. Its browny in colour and smells like hospitals. Costs a few quid at sainsburries, tesco or asda so is quite easy to get in the uk.

Dettol does work, but in my experience the best paint stripping stuff you can get easily in the UK is Fairy Power Spray. Meant for cleaning kitchens, but give a plastic model an hour or two soaked in FPS and poke at it with an old toothbrush for a bit and you can get it clean much easier than with dettol. So if you find that the experience with Dettol leaves something to be desired, there's your next option.

there's smoke in my iris, but I painted a sunny day on the insides of my eyelids

Is the paint you used water based? If it is enamel like testors model paints, that won't work.

Check this out mate, Dettol does indeed stink power spray seems a lot better smell wise. For me plastic and dettol was not the best but I only left it 5 hours, trying it longer this time with a test versus power spray, its all on the blog and then i notice you have already posted, doh!. Still may be useful for other people
