Just seeing if this would be a good idea to build towards for a simple 750 list. I don't have much, but all I would need to make this list work would be 14 lootas. I'm still learning orks, so bear with any stupid mistakes I've made. I'm hoping to eventually build up to 1,000-1500pts and was looking for something fun and orky to play around with. I was going to go bikes, but I just can't figure out a cheaper way of doing it at the moment, so it looks like boyz mobs for the time being. May try a battlewagon spam list down the road, so if this stuff could be used in a battlewagon list, that would be awesome.

Anyways, here's the list.

HQ:

Big Mek: 'eavy armor, Bosspole, KFF

Warboss: 'eavy armor, Bosspole, Cybork Body, Power Klaw

Elites:

x7 Lootas

x7 Lootas

Troops:

x20 shoota boyz: x1 boy with big shoota, 1 Nob with Big Shoota, Power Klaw, "eavy armor

x20 shoota boyz: x1 boy with big shoota, 1 Nob with Big Shoota, Power Klaw, "eavy armor

So would this be a solid core to an ork army? I'm not entirely sure where I want to go yet, but I already play foot IG, so I'm hoping to find a style that doesn't revolve around green tide if possible. Speed freaks, battlewagon bash, whatever. I'm just hoping that these basic units would work for most army types. I.E. Are these the meat and potato units almost all ork lists are built around?

Looks like a pretty good start towards whatever you want to do with them at higher points (unless you do go with bikes ).

The warboss isn't the best use of points for your list.
The nobs will want bosspoles(yes, I know they seem redundant to you right now.)
Lootas are good but I would still bring in some kannons to deal with the higher armour.
Also I would get an ADL so the lootas have cover.
ADL may as well have grots with a quadgun.

I think you will best in investing ork battleforces. As such you may as well start with trukk boyz and nob bikers.
Also the nob box set also a good starting point due to all the parts.
nob bikers are cheap $/point.
Also kit bash ork stuff, it is cheaper, cooler and more orky. In particular kannons from IG left over weapons can work well.

To start with I would suggest just getting AOBR boys, they are dirt, dirt cheap if you look around. Everyone says shoota boys are better, but sluggas are not so bad especially as AOBR gives them big shootas.

That is all the advice I have right now. Maybe bring IG allies in the short term whilst building them. Up take ork allies with your IG so you can learn their rules.

You can't go wrong with two squads of lootas. As long as you keep them them alive, they will draw your opponents attention, especially after you've rolled a five or six on the D3 for shots. If you're facing flyer spam, you can even lump those two into one and drop them in a battlewagon - they can still snapfire on the move and it turns the wagon into a mobile platform of death.

I agree with Fletch on the bosspoles. Many is the time that the boyz have dropped all around him and the nob rallies on the second leadership roll to charge a vehicle and take it out. When that happens for the third and fourth time after you've played a dozen games, you'll know what I mean.

You might want to consider rokkit buggies. Fast, cheap, hard hitting, zero leadership issues. It'll give you the fast attack you currently lack and will still be useful no matter your list no matter what else you get. I don't always take them but I like having the option.
