Here I was with 6 days left to go before making it to retirement of 22 yrs plus some months as change. I get the almighty phone call. I have been extended for one more year in the Army. Why was I extended for one more year I ask. Its due to my MOS being critical, my security clearence is still up to date with another 3 yrs left before I renew it. I was also selected for this "honor" due to strong NCOer's basically saying I'm steller at my job. Between the lines read.......possible deployment for me in the near future. Question is do I fight it with my medical or bite the bullet to lead soldiers again. I've a strong feeling I'm going to bite the bullet lead troops again.

So who here can beat this level of getting the "ole shaft"

I'm ever thankful for your service...

Having said that, I'd support you in whatever decision you will take.

Do you have a job waiting for you if you do retire from the service?

Same as above, no shame in your game either way you go. 22 years is a heckuva lot of time to be in the service. Being useful and speaking a few languages made this happen to a friend of mine. It does look great on your resume... if you do not early retire or something. When my friend finally finished service he couldn't sit and enjoy his deserved time off, just wasn't in him to retire and still works to this day.

And to answer you question: I have been screwed by jobs before, however I feel most of us will not have something on that level. I held a position interim for a year before, then trained my replacement who couldn't cut it and left, then I held it for another 6 months before I quit. They offered me the job when I handed in my resignation but I was too pissed to take them seriously. While mine sucked, I could have left at ANY time I wanted, yours is a bit tougher in that aspect.

I had a very tough senior NCO whom I respected (and continue to) a great deal who faced a deployment in 2005 at 21 years of service. He wasn't extended to be clear. He knew a deployment was coming and faced the choice of being promoted to E-8 and becoming our Top or retiring and leaving us to the fates of PersCom. While the circumstances are different the result is the same. I encourage you to look past the big green weenie and see this as another opportunity to do what I assume you do very well: train and lead. There is no higher calling.

Damn dude that sucks the big one. My brother inlaw is also near his retirement (something like 4 months?) and he was suppose to leave the Army 2 years ago if I remember correctly, but has been extended for similar reasons. I feel for ya, but good luck whatever route you end up taking

May I ask what MOS refers to? Dakka is telling me it means "Mark of Slaanesh", which makes you post friggin' awesome.

I think that that's no shame in fighting that extension, however from reading your posts for a while I get the impression that service is -obviously- a major part of your life and you seem to really enjoy it, so I have to ask how much you've thought about what post-service life will be like.

MOS is Military Occupational Specialty.
Essentially, it's like a "job" such as Infantry, Artillery, Ordinance, Engineering, Etc.
Ninja'd

It's stories like this that make me a little nervous, seeing as I'll begin "training" (ROTC) after this year. I know that I won't see "real service" for four years, at which point we will probably have a peace-time military, but it's a bit unnerving for would-be/soon-to-be cadets like myself. Whatever your choice, thank you for serving our country.

I don't know. Can you still retire with full benefits? I'd think about that. 22 years? You've done your bit for King and country and left the rest of us ungrateful bastards behind. There comes a time when its acceptable to lay down your burdens. If you still have that option, I'd seriously think about it.

LOL I already own a Jeep Wrangler, Mistibishi Spyder, and a muscle car "Maverick" Looking maybe this time if I do go a truck. Wife though will drop a brick if orders arrive. Two divorces already marked up not looking for a third She knows I have a strong sense of duty. She also knows leading troops in combat is the ulitmate feeling a NCO can have. Now the "pending doom" time phase is in effect.

Time to get out I think.
You've done your time and paid your dues.
Work/life balance is important, get some time for life now.
Unless they were offering very good incentives (Large amounts of cash for example) I'd say thanks but no thanks.
