What codex would fit this role better? The role is to act as a commissar replacement now that they've gotten worse. So it would have to fit as many independent characters in an ally's slots as possible. The purpose is not to overshadow to guardsmen but to be a force multiplier; by adding "know no fear", psychic powers, and even a cover save. (Probably not even model them as Marines)

Space Wolves can fit two rune priests and maybe a techpriest. (is the techpriest an independent character?) Rune Priests are good all around, and can even give cover to everyone around. (like the conscripts in front)

Blood Angels can have only one HQ, but can take three priests. I've heard they have a shield that gives cover too?

Maybe we even turn this into a Combi-Guard tactica.

The important question is which units do you feel the need to spend all those points on improving? Backfield objective holders that can't risk a failed morale check costing you the objective? Meatshield screens and/or tarpit units? Offensive blobs/vet squads/etc that need to advance on the enemy and shoot them off their objectives?

The answer to this question is very important in deciding which allies will benefit you, and if you're even getting any benefit at all from them compared to just buying more IG.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Make sure you look at the FAQ's for each of those armies first. almost every bonus has been errata'd to say "only suppports unit from this codex" more or less. You might find your options are much more imited than you thought. it's pretty stupid after they go and add the battle brothers rule in the main book to basicly take it away.

Tech preists are independent as long as they don't take servitors.

If you're just looking for something to stick in a blob, then really any multi-wound SM HQ choice is going to do. Heck, you could go a long way with just a captain. Of course, if you really want to throw down points, there are some nasty options (Njal comes to mind), but if you're willing to throw down that many points, you might as well just take yarrick and not have to pay the overhead of also taking a troops choice from the SM codex.

In general, probably the best thing you can ally for guard from the SM codices is drop pods. Your opponent may think they have you figured out... and then you drop pod death company or a tooled up command squad right on their faces.

Make the enemy leadership 4 and then take a -2 Leadership test with libbys. They run, if you do it on jump infantry or infantry near the table edge on 1st turn, you kill them without shooting.

Well, you could go for a MotF on bike with conversion beamer, 2 Dreads (elite and HS), sniper Scouts, and Stormtalon.

The basic plan is to make a version of blob Guard that work in sixth. The Marines are less there as a separate force, and more like really tough squad leaders for the blobs. Not really looking to add more then is necessary to unlock some useful characters, that way the theme isn't diluted. So anything that helps keep them alive or enhances then. At minimum I'm looking for a morale boost, which Ailaros points out can be done by any independent character. But I'm going to go all the way and include allies then I should look for more.

Anything with psychic power helps, the divination primaris helps a blob function in shooting and even melee. Might even get lucky and get the invuln as the second power.

Anything that provides a mobile cover save helps survivability. All I'm aware of is Njal and some shield Blood Angels get. (What are the details on it? Unit only or a bubble?)

Important also is access to multiple characters, a single blob isn't enough. (Which is what ruled out Jacobus) That is what drew me to Wolves, since they get two HQs per slot.

There are so many options, you can choose any codex.
Highlights:
Rune priest gives ATSKNF and divination(also has awesome psychic defence)
wolf priest with saga of the hunter gives stealth, outflank, acute senses, fearless
Jacobus gives FNP, fearless, +1A
Blood angel librarian gives ATSKNF and divination(or shield[5+cover save])
Azreal gives 4++ save
Belial gives fearless

However, if you want mulitple blobs then wolves as the 2HQ or BA with priests(or techmarine) and a HQ.
I wouldn't suggest vanilla techmarine and HQ, just to get 2 ICs, as the techmarine is not enough of a buff.
Also black templar can give 2 ICs but they are not brilliant buffs for their cost.

What do you plan on top of multiple blobs?

Grey Knights.

Brotherhood Champion for one blob.
Techmarine with rad grenades for another blob.

A single 5 man strike squad to abuse WQ to protect your shiny rearfield tanks.

300 points.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, if stubborn is an acceptable substitute for ATSKNF, you could do an OX Inquisitor instead of the Brotherhood Champ, and take Rad/Psycho grenades, power armor, and upgrade to a psyker (and trade in powers!) for 93 points.

So Space Wolves will make two blobs really effective, while Blood Angels will make one really effective and three blobs usable. I think I'm leaning towards the Wolves.

@MFletch - I was going to add Marbo like always, and am experimenting with the idea of rough riders and possibly storm troopers/psycher battle squads. I might also add primaris psychers to the blobs to get feel no pain every once in a while, thats if I don't take Stracken like always.

I thought Grey Knights weren't battle brothers daedalus?

Aren't Space Wolves Battle Brothers with Guard?

Splitting up Wolf Guard to lead your Infantry blobs seems like a neat idea (not sure if that's possible, though, depends on the wording of the splitting rule).

Rough riders probably need a marine biker or wolf cavalry.

No, wolf guard only lead certain SW units.

That's a disappointment, but then a 50 points IC with so many special rules would be too good.
