Am I reading the faq correct in that or nob squads are still characters? It seems that it added things but didn’t take the character rule away from the unit.
Page 413 - Reference, Profiles
Add the following Designer’s Note:.
Designers Note: Wolf Guard, Nobz, Nobz Warbikers, and Crisis
Shas’vre that lead a unit (for example an Ork Nob leading Ork
Boyz, a Wolf Guard leading Grey Hunters) have the unit type
Infantry (Character).

Ork nob are no longer a character UNLESS they are leading a unit like a Nob in a pack of boyz.

Only the leaders of a unit, a nob squad doesnt have a unit leading it.
However regular bikers or boyz with a nob leading them would qualify.

You missed the change right before that. Same page, left column at the bottom:
Page 413 – Reference, Profile, Codex: Orks, Nob.
Change unit type to Infantry and add the following Designer’s
Note:

Change unit type to Bike.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Nobs, Warbiker nob, paladin, and Wolf guard lost their CH identifier. They only have CH now if they are leading a unit.
