Been ping ponging this around since the codex came out, and the recent FAQs (and a subsequent discussion with Abuse Puppy at 3++) got me thinking again on a good way to run these guys.
They've really been my last pic out of the Elite codex, not particular because of any knock against them, but simply because what I needed from the slot in most of my lists they simply didn't provide. However, since the advent of Invasion Beams and the elevation since 6th dropped of hardy units that can push the envelope deep into enemy deployment zones and are not afraid of CC, I've been considering them more and more. So what would you really want in Death Star built around this unit?
I think the Night Scythe is a no brainer. 15 carrying capacity should be quite sufficient for the guys+teks/lords+Overlord or two. Also, being able to deploy 40" off your table edge with a deathstar is pretty amazing.
Trazyn is pretty intriguing, at least coexisting in the same list. He makes them scoring, and shores up their anti-horde capabilities quite nicely. They also make him virtually un-killable. One thing to consider is deploying Trazyn with a D&D combo first (as he synergizes with them pretty nice as well), and allowing him to jump over to the LG when ever he dies. Of course this is complicated by any number of Tek/Lords you have that are not with that unit.
I think the first (and only if you have only one slot) RC to attach is a challenge beast Lord. You need the AP 1 and Naught killing capabilities of the WS, the versatility of the MSS, as well as the longevity of the Res Orb, as I can't think of a more perfect unit in the game to attach one to.
After that though, what next? Nemesor is an intriguing possibility, as he is with all large units. A second Lord has potential, but so do a few of the Crypteks, as they can both diversify the units capabilities as well as bolster their CC prowess.
So what, and in what way, have y'all run this unit, particularly in the close to maximum build? I realize it's going to get pricey, around 600 to 700 points, which is why I think Trazyn is a must, as 600 to 700 scoring points is much easier to justify. Still, pretty intriguing, and I know quite a few opponents that would gak a brick if 10 LG, 2 Lords, and an Overlord just plopped down in the middle of their deployment zone.
