Just making sure I am reading the rules right. If the Monolith (Heavy, Skimmer, Tank) fires the Particle Whip (an ordnance weapon) does it fire the remaining weapons as Snap Shots?

Yes, the particle whip is ordinance so you may only fire your gauss flayers as snap shots.

Pssst, amrogers3....take a Doomsday Ark instead of that Monolith, its cheaper and much much better. Just my opinion and sorry for off topic, I couldn't help it.

on the forum. Obviously

Its debatable.
If you want a vehicle that can nuke things from a distance, get the doomsday ark.

If you want a durable support vehicle that adds some flexibility to your army, get a monolith.

Actually in that case you'd likely want a ghost ark, catacomb command barge, and/or annihilation barge. (depending on your needs).

Sadly other than being a big AV 14 LOS-Blocker, there isn't a single general advantage in 6th edition to taking a monolith that cannot be served by taking another (cheaper, points-wise) unit or vehicle.

Ghost Arks can only help warriors, and you can't teleport soldiers across the map with it.
CCB only help the Overlord who's on it.
Anni barges provides good fire support, but no mobility.

If you add them all together, you spend something like 300-400 points.

The Monolith could be best described as a "jack of all trades, master of none vehicle"

It has a nice S8 AP3 pie plate, but that's not as good as compared to the Doomsday's S9 AP1.
It has decent small guns on it as well as the portal of exile, but the anni barge is still a better fire support vehicle
It can teleport any unit across the map...ok, I can't think of one better.
And its the only vehicle in the necron army that's AV14. Since its a skimmer, it doesn't actually BLOS.

For 'teleporting' units across the map, i'd suggest crypteks with the 'Veil of Darkness' and 'Harbringer of Despair' upgrades, Vargard Obyron, or failing that a nightscythe.

Damn, I must be thinking of 4th again. You can't shoot underneath vehicles in 6th, can you?

You can if you can see underneath them.
The monolith isn't far enough off the ground anything to see under it.

Obyrne is a special character who takes up a HQ slot. He's 40 points less than a monolith, you can't have 3 of him and he doesn't come with an ID portal and a S8 pieplate.
Crypteks can only teleport the squad they are attached to AND they scatter. You also have to have a Overlord in your army for each teleporting cryptek, so that's an HQ slot gone right there.
Nightscythes still aren't as efficient as teleportation. You have to fly them over to where you want the unit and disembark the unit. If you want to pick up another unit, you have to spend at least a turn or two getting the flyer in position.

You are forgetting that in order to teleport things to a monolith, you have to 'have' the monolith in the area you want to bring the units to. That is pretty much the same as a nightscythe, only difference there is the nightscythe can fly in from the board edge as well as deepstrike.

As for buying (at least one) overlord as an HQ, why 'wouldn't' you be doing that? What purpose is served by denying yourself access to most of the coolest wargear and special effects in the codex?

That said: I'm not saying that these items are 'literal' replacements for 'everything' the monolith can do, just that they fulfill the same general 'role' but cheaper, better, or even both.

But they aren't actually cheaper alternatives to teleportation. The despair cryptek with teleportation will set you back at least 155 points, and you can only teleport 1 unit, and you don't get a pie plate.
The nightscythe will set you back at least 185 points, and you don't get a pie plate, its AV11 (granted, its a flyer). And its harder to get the nightscythe in position because you have to move it at least 18" a turn, as opposed to the monolith's 6"

I think you missed when I said "jack of all trades, master of none". Yes, there may be more efficient alternatives than the monolith for cheaper, but they still don't have all the abilities that the monolith has to offer.
The doomsday ark is killier, but it doesn't add as much mobility. The Royal Court may ultimately provide a lot more tactical possibilities, but its also very pricy, and the veil of darkness is still not as efficient.

Just compare the monolith to other AV14 choices in other codices. The landraider is about 200+ points. It doesn't DS, it doesn't have a pieplate, it doesn't have LM and it can't teleport units across the map at will.
The Leman russ is about 185 (I think) if you take the pie plate. It can't DS and it can't teleport units.
Compared to those other codices, the monolith is quite a bargain.

The best use me and my cron playing friends have found now is being a big pretty distraction.
Pie plates - nice, lots of other guns - nice, teleport other things up - getting good ( especially as you can get out within 6" not the 2" it was in 5th).
The biggest problem is there are other things that will fit more playing styles for less and are bettter options. It can be given a job to do but isn't quite as flexiable as other things, your description: 'jack of all trades, master of none vehicle', fits it very well.
This is coming from personal experiance and am not saying i'm right.

The problem with the Monolith is the Particle Weapon is ordnance. Really? 200 points for a high AV vehicle with basically one weapon? Because how many 6's out of 6 dice are you going to roll with the Gauss sponsons?

I was trying to find a vehicle that could wreck Orks and the Monolith was a contender until I read the ordnance part. That made me sad.

Yeah, I find it stupid as well that heavy vehicles don't get to ignore that Ordnance Weapon rule. I mean, they are heavy vehicles
Maybe they'll change it in the next FAQ.
But hey, on the bright side, monoliths weren't the only vehicles to be hurt by this. LRBT are now heavy as well, meaning that they suffer from the same problem.
You'd be surprised how many sixes you can roll

And as I said, you aren't just paying 200 pts for the weapon. You are also paying for the AV14, the portal of exile, Deep Strike, the teleportation ability, the sponsons (which protect the whip now, as the WD result is now random)
