Pretty much the what the thread title says. My army lists are ok, but can't quite make the cut. Just in general, or if it depends on race I play Salamander Marines and am thinking of starting Imperial Guard.

Yes still the same as above, take anything that flys to be very competititve. e.g. take necrons flyers and bet you that you will win 90% of your games. IG take vendettas or what ever that flys.

how many points of salamanders do you want to play? 1500? 1850? 2000?

4500 pts (1000 or so painted)
1850pts

In a nutshell, all of them.

He's just looking for guidance on how much of each force org slot to take, not list tweaks. He probably thinks he carries too much of something... OP, care to explain?

I guess step one would be "Make sure Vulcan is your HQ choice".
If you are running Salamanders I assume you are running Vulcan. It would make sense then that you are going hog wild on the meltas and TH/SS and flamers. Right on. Just because you can take TL hot stuff doesn't mean you have to (you should definitely take some to make Vulcan worth it, but you can take some lascannons for range, or heavy bolters/plasma cannons for pulping hordes.
You don't have to drop coin on a bunch of flyers, but an Aegis defense line could do you wonders with it's AA gun.
You have to come with more of a problem than "what do I run?" if you want any real focused help. You'll get like 50 views of your list in question and maybe three or four people will give their two cents, but with no list present there's not much to go on.
A good rule of thumb is a troop choice at roughly every 500 pts. You have to have enough dudes out there to grab objectives, and if you play competitively you will play objectives for a certainty.
And put all your little mans in rhinos or drop pods. The emperor gave them to you for a reason, other than for traitor legions to steal.

In some ways I have to be negative. You see all sorts of lists win.You can be given a winning list and fail, it is quite easy.

Play the mission and bring an army to counter what you expect to see.

As such I would suggest Vulkan with drop pods. Probably a nice amount of MM to have a go at flyer if needs be.

Vulkan is all about spamming flamers and meltas. Bring antiflyer and something with some range then you are bound to have enough scoring units and ability to kill for what you need.

if your taking salamnders then obviously vulkan is a good first choice. other suggestions would be to spam flamers/meltas on vehicles/bikes, take SS/TH terminators with vulcan and your other HQ, take 1 or 2 ironclad dreadnaught in drop pods to harass the opponents rear guard, a vindicator will help as well as melta land speeders with cyclone missile launchers, and if your going to take land raiders only take the crusaders.

as for IG armored core still works due to target saturation, but a heavy flying list does well also.
