Was just wondering if people would mind playing vs an ultramarine painted army with lysanders or and other chapters HQ leading them?

This is exactly why I do not playing with unique characters. I just do not like getting into the awkwardness of the scenario but ya it is legal and it is perfectly fine.

In the ideal world, they would be custom models, capturing both the essence of your army, while being distinctly the special character they are being fielded as (to prevent confusion) With your own backstory as to why someone with Lysander's stats is leading Ultramarines (hint: it's probably Agamon, the 1st company captain)

In reality, It doesn't matter. Marines work together all the time. If the Ultras and the Fists were on a joint operation, there is a good chance that some troops will find themselves under allied command. And there will be no confusion who the big yellow guy with the hammer is.

It's 100% rules legal.
It's close to 100% fluff approved (some exceptions may apply)

No you can paint him blue and say he is Gargle, captain of the first company if you want, but if you want to call him Lysander than probably yes

Yeah, you're good to go. The idea is that maybe at one point the Ultramarines had a captain who wore Terminator armor, was tough as hell and had a big hammer.You don't even need to use the Lysander model, just one with the same equipment and suitably ornate conversion work to count-as Lysander. There's no reason the Salamanders couldn't have a tough as hell chaplain with a drakescale cloak to count-as Cassius, or why there could be a scout sergeant sharpshooter in the Crimson Fists to count-as Telion.

And if anyone mocks you for it, do as follows:

-Go to page 104 in your Codex: Space Marines book
-show them the mighty heroes paragraph
-roll up your codex and smack them across the face with it (YMMV,)

Just don't use a Tyranid model for "count as"...suffice to say I've had nightmares about people having a space marine army consisting of eldar, tyranids and marines....the horror

This is the (other) main reason I use a custom chapter.
Get all the characters you want, scrape the chapter markings off them, and paints them your way.
I have Telion and Pedro as members of my chapter.
It's just a pity I can't decide what my chapter's symbol should be :(

Happens all the time. Why just the other day I played against Salamanders led by Darnath Lysandermander.

And a guy at the shop has crimson fists led by Vulkan.

I do this all the time. It's praetor captain of the salamanders first company who is a TH/SS termi's haha.

My Darnath Lysander model is literally the standard model, just painted in Ultramarines colours. IF iconography and everything. So far, no one has said anything about it.

Or darnath Ultrasander.
