Subject: WYSIWYG and Conversions, in competitive play

Hey all,
I'm told many tournaments are WYSWIG only. I can understand that, to an extent, but I want to know what the general concensus is on converted weapons. The reason I'm asking is because I have a ton of DE Warriors in my list that need to be equipped with a range of weapons, mostly Shardcarbines and Blasters. When they ship you the sprues, in each box you get 1 Blaster, 1 Shredder, 1 Cannon, and 1 Dark Lance. Doesn't help that they make a unit capabale of having 2 Lances/Cannons, 4 Blasters/Shredders, 0-14 Splinter Rifles, 14 Shardcarbines etc, and not give you the upgrades OR a sprue weapons pack to purchase.
Weak.
SO, I've got to set about converting some odd 20 warriors with a plethora of weapons I don't have and which are perpetually sold out on bitz part stores online.
What should I keep in mind as I convert the weapons I need(with Greenstuff, extra bitz, etc.)?

Your weapons should look mostly like the weapon you are fielding, they should be consistent between all similar weapons, distinctive from the other weapon types you are fielding and clear to your opponent.
I.e. Your dark lances should looks somewhat like dark lances, look the same as all your other dark lances, not look like your splinter cannons and when you put your army on the table they should be able to tell the difference at a glance between blasters, splinter cannons and dark lances.

TBH if you are just sloppy about getting the weapons you want on the model and just putting on some old thing then you shall get some trouble.
If you have GH for example, they come with a bolter, bolt pistol and ccw. If you just have him holding a a bolter or model it with pistol and ccw then you are fine.
However, if you claim that one of the five men in the squad modeled with pistol and ccw is armed with a plasma gun then you are taking the piss.
It is unreasonable in that situation in a tournament to expect your opponent to recognise which model is armed with a special weapon beyond their standard gear.

Easiest way is to buy them, but not necessarily the cheapest. Otherwise find something easy to convert that looks different and make sure your opponent knows what they are. Also, keep in mind that every tournament is unique because GW has set no clear line other than what is in the BRB.

Thanks for the replies all! I found a way to turn the Shredder and Dark Lance into very convincing Blasters. So, for each pack of Warriors, I can get 3 Blasters and one Cannon. Good enough!
Now, I just need to pick up 3 extras from a bitz store. Might buy a whole box so I've got a few more Warriors(more the merrier!) but we'll see!
Thanks!

As long as it looks the part and is distinguishable from the weapons you're converting from, you should be fine. Of course, the final authority of the matter would be the TO - if you're not sure, just check with him.

That's a pretty common practice and almost certainly acceptable.

A good key to remember is that it's better to make them look unique then to make them look like a different weapon.
If I glance at a unit and see a splinter cannon looking gun, I'm going to assume its a splinter cannon. If I glance and see a odd gun I've never seen before that looks vaguely like a blaster, I'm going to ask, which works fine.

I want all my models to look correct with the weapons they have, luckly I have more then enough tac squads to be able to do this, bought a hell of a lot of bits to get this done and will be drilling magnets into the IC's for hot swappable weapons.
But I was thinking the other day, dread in a pod, should I rip out the internals of the pod to make it look like the dread can fit in there ?

Thats what i did. The internals dont do anything or serve any purpose other than aesthetic anyway.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Have never been called for MFA while doing this, I always admitted to laziness though. ^^

Actually, I think my modelling looks pretty convincing, to the point where I had to stop and look to see which was the actual Blaster...The Shredder pulls it off perfectly when you cut off the veins up front!
