So - I'm running a BA list with 3 10man assault squads, 2 vindicators, 2 furiosos in drop pods (1 fists & Mag Grap, 1 talons & flamer), 3 baal preds, and a storm raven.

Deploying for turn 1 is pretty straight forward, but when I loose the roll off it's really hard to decide how to deploy & what to keep in reserve. I'm usually playing armies that can pop tanks pretty easy straight off the bat, so target saturation is a must - but what about outflanking the baals / deep-striking the ass-squads etc.

How would you deploy? Got any general rules of thumb that might be useful?

Cheers!

I would say it depends on what was fielded/type of army across from you. If they stick to the center then your outflanking might be fruitless. If there's a parking lot (mech IG) then him going first would allow melta/IP squads room to DS for rear armor shots IF he moves anything.

So I would go mostly on the table. Considering the two DPs and SR have to be in reserve I probably wouldn't put much more in reserve. Then again if you put a locator beacon on the raven then on the next turn units could drop in right by it and with a possible 36" move that can be deep in enemy lines.

It depends on the army, as mentioned above but also let's not forget the mission as well.
For example, just dive straight in for the relic.

Your list looks really flexible. There tonnes of ways to deploy. So some ideas:

Never be afraid of combat squadding. 5 marines with 2 meltas works well for killing, 5 marines with jack also works well for missions.
Empty drop pods are awesome road blocks.
Also all your units are capable of doing virtually any job. Baal assault cannons, assault squads with flamers but with kraks, and vindicators are good at antitank whilst not being the raison d'etre they still can put the enemy on the back foot.
