Deathwatch: IS it possible to make a list for them?  [RSS] Share on facebook Share on Twitter Submit to Reddit

Poll
What Codex should a Deathwatch army run?
C: Space Marines (Reasoning: Sternguard and Pedro Kantor, and many other good lists available)
C: Grey Knights (Reasoning: Inquisition. They are Fluffy and have lots of options)
C: Black Templars (Reasoning: Varied squads. Scouts and SM combined can run as a Kill Team)
C: Dark Angels (Reasoning: Very secretive and have a few good lists)
C: Chaos Space Marines (Reasoning: Chaos is varied, and the marks allow me to change things up)
C: Blood Angels (Reasoning: Death Company run with varied Equipement. Makes sense)
C: Space Wolves (Reasoning: They are very varied. They also have some codex options that are nice for varied units)

Hello, all!

I have been painting my own Deathwatch character (who is awesome, by the way ) and then I decided to paint another... and another... and another... and now I have a small 4 man squad of Deathwatch characters, and I realised something. I have enough spare parts lying around to start an small 1000 point army, and I want to make a Deathwatch army. My first idea was to go Codex: SM and run sternguard and Pedro Kantor, but then I realised that C: GK is also really cool.

So here I am now... asking you all what you, the community) think. Here is a list of questions I need to answer before I begin making a list:

1) What Codex should I use for them?
2) What kind of tactics should I focus on?
3) What is the best way to represent the Kill-Teams?
4) What is a list you would use to represent Deathwatch?
5) If I start this army, who should I use as allies?

After I find answers for all these questions, I will start posting pictures of my Deathwatch army in the Works in Progress section.

Thank you all!

LordofNight2

Space Marines.

Sternguard are an excellent analogy for the old 4th edition Deathwatch unit from White Dwarf.

Kantor with Sternguard would make sense.

Further, since the Deathwatch work with the Ordo Xenos, then Grey Knight Allies with an Inquisitor would be pretty fluffy.

Out of the options you've given:

- I run a pedro kantor list for my deathwatch, but only kantor and the sternguard are modelled as such, the rest are an allied chapter. The problem with this is that pedro lists focus on combi weapons, which isn't the DW's style.

- Grey knights is a possibility, with the squads being lead by deathwatch librarians, and psybolts for the specialist ammo. It also opens up scope for ordo xenos inquisitors and henchmen to pad out the rest of the army with squishies.

- I've actually seen someone run a kill-team (as in the 200 pts game) of noise marines as deathwatch, which worked really well. Sonic blaster = snazzy boltgun.

The black templars and dark angels, don't see why they're in the running.

The main problem you face from a fluff standpoint is that deathwatch forces are usually very small, being at the most 20 marines. Whilst this doesn't scream 'army' you may want to look into 'allies' from another chapter (not necessarily using the allies rules, just different parts of the codex you're using ie/ ordo xenos henchmen).

Hope that helps

Why must I always choose beween certain death and probable death.

Thank you both for the replies! Very helpful for me!

The reason I put Dark Angels and Black Templars up is because I thought I would just list every power armoured codex just in case. someone wanted them. And yes I like what both of you say and I am probably going to use both of these as my plan. It will be a small force but I want them to be a nice playable force and I think that Sternguard are the best choice for them. Kantor would be either my Watch Captain, Commander or Champion and for troops I would run 2 5 man kill teams and maybe a scout squad modeled as Henchmen. My allies would probably be grey knights and inquisitors or maybe Imperial Guard or Witch Hunters.

EDIT: DAMMIT! I forgot to add Blood Angels, and they were one of the better options. Run Death company, because they have varied equipement and then a Death Company Dreadnaught, with a Blood Angels captain as my Watch Captain. I will add it to the poll... Tell me what you think.

Oh yes, and another thing, I heard a rumor that the C: WH will be getting an update that will include Deathwatch Kill-teams as Elites. Can anyone confirm this for me?

Sternguard rules are influenced heavily by the Deathwatch rules from way back when. They're really the best way to make them work. Use Pedro to make them scoring, and the Troops choices can be two scout squad counts-as Inquisitorial Stormtroopers or something along those lines.

That rumor is unsubstantiated; there's no word on Sisters getting new stuff anytime soon. Codex: Witchhunters doesn't exist anymore.

Ok thanks, kinda sad about the rumor :( was really looking forward to fielding Deathwatch and sisters together. And it looks like I will probably end up running C: SM and MAYBE add C: BA allies... Because when you think about it: Death Company can be anything you need them to. They can be shooty or assault depending on what you give them and they all can have different equipement. Or allies from C: IG to represent PDF allied forces. If I ran allies from C: GK I would only want to run the henchmen and ordo xenos inquisitor because GKs are mainly Ordo Malleus and the two ordo's don't really mix well in fluff.

Well, you can field Deathwatch and Sisters together with the Allies rules, so you're all set!

I'm actually planning on Blood Angels allies as well for my Crimson Fists. I want to run them them with Tycho for Crimson Fists Ork Hunter veterans. I think it'lll be awesome, however rarely I'll end up using them.

Wait, do Tycho's traits carry over to the fists as well?! That means... oh so many good lists just came to mind...
