Cultist of Nurgle with Open Sores

So I decided to make a palanquin of Nurgle. Finally found some models that look good carrying it etc. Now I am just working on minor details and am trying to decide if I want some wooden braces holding the predator turret hatch on, or not.
Palanquin without braces:

I like the look without, but with hides the fact that it is a predator top plate.
Maybe something to make the beams a bit more finished looking and actually attached will make it look better.

Honestly the beams on top are fresh cut sprue, I still would need to cut them down into logs. Another option would be to just have the ones along the outside and none going across the plate.

I'd add the supports, provided you dress them up, a bit. Even as a makeshift platform, it looks too slapdash without the hatch somehow incorporated into the construction, instead of just sitting atop it. A bit of rope (glue-soaked string, twisted wire, GS sculpting, etc.) lashing and/or some rough nails to make the crude construction appear a little more intentional, on your part, would also be a nice touch, if you want to take things a little farther.

Building off of these ideas, I fitted two different sizes of paperclips in lieu of the sprue beams to make it look like the pred plate is held on by cables or pipes of some sort.
Better or worse?

How about with, but use some Greenstuff to mold some gnarly-looking rotting stuff (biomass or something) up there? Maybe a dead corpse or two?

The models are some old blood bowl chaos mutants that the owner of the LGS basically begged me to buy as I contemplated them for use so he could finally clear the last of his blood bowl items. I got a good deal, as he never updated the price on them and they were still $9 (as opposed to the $16 GW wants now.)
This is their official GW store page.
Also, you are the only one who says without, may I ask why and what about with the paperclip bars?

Thanks!
As for the Palanquin, I just think the paperclip thingy looks better. Some chains could help as well.

Some solid plasticard tubes cut thinly would make great bolt tops, to suggest bolts anchoring the top panel to the logs. Try making sure every part looks joined securely to the rest of the structure - something that looks like it'll work in real life will usually just look better.
