I need help with my Space Wolves. I'm fairly new to the hobby and the first 3 games I've played I've lost horribly. For now I'm playing at 1000 pts but I have enough to up it to 1500. I don't have any transports save the Drop Pod from the battleforce box so I'm working on a Drop Pod List as the footslog I was doing was murder. Here's what I have so far:

HQ
Rune Priest 100 pts
WGBL- WTN, WTT, Plasma Pistol, Frost Sword, Saga of the Hunter 135 pts

Elites
Wolf Guard x 3 144 pts
One with PA, Combi-melta and Thunder Hammer
The other two have TDA, one with a Combi-plasma and PF and the other with a Combi-Plasma and Wolf Claw

Troops
Grey Hunters x 10 - 2 melta, standard, power sword, MotW 195 pts
Grey Hunters x 8 - 1 plasma, standard, power maul, MotW, Drop Pod 205 pts
Grey Hunters x 5 75 pts

Hvy Support
Long Fangs x 6 140 pts
2 HB, 2 ML, 1 PC

It comes out to 999. My tactics were to have the WGBL, the WG in PA and the 10 GH outflank, the WG with the PF to join the 8 GH in the DP and the last WG to join the last GH Pack and defend the home obj/ LF. The RP will join the LF for prescience. On tun 1 the WGBL and his pack outflank on one side of the board near the enemy deployment zone while the DP drops on the opposite side hopefully near the deployment zone too. The LF with the help of the RP shoot down and flyers or vehicles while the plasma cannon makes mince meat out of large chunks of troops. The 5 GH grab the objective nearest my lines and holds it. The WGBL starts taking out AV 12+ with his pack while the other pack of GH focuses on anti-infantry. My usual opponents are Deathwing, Mech Tau and Tyranids with 2 flying Hive Tyrants! What do you guys in the community with more time in the hot seat think? I know it's not balanced and I'd rather not go out and pick up a bunch of Rhinos or Razorbacks. I'm also working on getting the bits for a squad of ML LF but its a WIP. My biggest worry is maneuverability, once my packs are on the board they're stuck there. And with the mech Tau and flying Nids, my back lines with get shot up/eaten pretty quickly. I'd like to add in more DP Packs to ensure victory at my opponent's backfield but I still lack a counter-assault unit. I'm thinking a Thunderwolf Lord with 3 Thunderwolves but I'm also considering allying with Vanilla Marines to get bike troops. Scoring T5 units that add some shooting as well as possible cc potential as opposed to the Thunderwolves which have no shooting but great potential in CC, either winning or at the least a decent tarpit. What do you guys also think about Raven Guard as an ally? I can take Korvydae from IA, with two full Assault squads for under 600. That would give me more models and wounds in two hard hitting squads that can move 12. I'm working my way up to 2500 so any thoughts on larger games are appreciated.

Please help me DakkaDakka! You're my only hope...

Hmmmmm.......... I will do my best.

For a low points game you need to work with your strengths..... Grey Hunters. I would run them together because not much can take 2 grey hunters squads.

Leave the drop pod, spreading your army out makes easy targets. wait till you get three, drop two in the first turn then the third and your scouts or outflanking GH in the second always together.

Drop the WGBL for a Wolf Priest, and put him in a squad with lots of plasma, read 10 man 2x plasmagun, plasma pistol, standard, MotW, power axe/fist, add a WG with combiplasma, then when you get your three drop pods you can add Saga of the hunter.

Your LF are not very effective. I know when your starting it's hard to collect enough of the same weapon. you need to aim for a unit with 5 x ML or 4x ML and 1 lascannon. and unit with 3 x HB 2 x PC. these weapons work well for split fire but still work when you pack leader dies. Another devistator box should help you out!

you need to write out a list and try it out with your friends then start collecting, its how I did it.

If you want to use those tactics try

RP

WP PP SotH RA

WG CP PS(outflank with WP)
10x GH, 2xPG, PP, MotW, WS, PA

WG CM PS (RP here)
8x GH MG, MotW, WS, PF
Drop pod

10x GH 2xMG, MotW, PS, WS
Drop pod

10x GH 2xPG, MotW, PS, WS
Drop pod

WG CP, WC, MB
5x GH, PG, MotW
Razorback TL Las

WG blank
6x LF 3x HB, 2x PC
Razorback TL Las

I dont have a codex as Im at work but this should be good list for the tactic you want to try. should be arounf 1750 from memory ( dont quote me though)

First turn drop RP's GH with one of the other squads close together, they need to back each other up! If tank heavy drop the second melta squad with them, if not than the plasma squad. You can choose to have the RP with LF if you want but try both and it gives you yhe option every game what you want.
6 man GH take close objective. LF target MEQ and Squads, Lascannons take out vehicles

Second turn drop pod and WP should come on together, keep them close together. If only one comes out move them to an easy kill or near the other two squads. Always try to pick off the oponents split off squads for easy kills.

I hope that helps mate, sorry if it is a bit irratic I am at work haha

Think of something witty..........

Well 8th has succeeded in making me a 40k noob.

I agree with alot that was said. Work with your strengths and that is troopers.

With that in mind.

Rune Priest 100
Grey Hunters : 10, Standard, 2 Melta 170
Grey Hunters: 10, Standard, 2 Plasma 175
Grey Hunters: 10, Standard, 2 Plasma 175
Long Fangs 140
760

Now add 4 Wolf Guard 72
832

That leaves you with 168 points to upgrade your squads abd wolf guard. If you want to use your drop pod,
Add 3 Wolf Guard with combi meltas. 104. This is a drop and frag the tank unit. Another nice option at 1000 points, is to add a lone wolf 85 poinys gets you a lone wolf with chainfist and storm shield... With his abilities his job is to target MC, dreads etc. It is also very fun to take a unit that you WANT to die. Rather than power weapons in the grey hunters I would recommend MOTW. In conjunction with your standard, it is probably going to better than a PW on a grey hunter.

Thanks for the feedback, I've got a game tomorrow against the flying nids of doom so I'll let you know how it goes. I really like the WGBL but it may be just too many points at this level. I've added in a Lone Wolf and I'll see how it does against either the flying Tyrant or the swarms of gaunts my opponent likes to play. Wish me luck and thanks for the help.

So... 1000 points, Wolves vs Nids. The Nid player brought his winged Tyrant, the Doom of Malantai, the Deathleaper, a lictor, 4 warriors, and 27 ripper bases. OI!

I won first turn and we had 3 obj on the table. End of turn 4 he had one obj, I didn't have any and I was dead to the last man.

I killed the tyrant which is nice but the darned Doom of Malantai basically won the whole game. The tyrant took a round of shooting before falling however Malantai destroyed two squads, one of which was the one with my Wolf Priest. I know its not much of a batrep, and I can post one if anyone wants it but it wasn't a real nail biter. Turn 1 nothing happened, turn 2 everything went to hell.

That's 0-w 0-d and 4-l :(

I'd like to not do a razorspam or rhino rush btw. it just seems that all the sw players I know do it and it seems too cookie-cutter for my tastes.
