My question would be why not do this when he died it seems to work for spacemarines and it would keep him about and a active force in the galaxy so why didnt they do this is it ever explained?
I understand the golden throne keeps him alive but couldn't a dreadnought do the same ?

Because he is required to be on the Golden Throne for the Imperium to survive.

Which makes the dreadnought a bit pointless..

Now me, i'd fit thrusters on Terra and fly it around as his body, but that's me

The inhabitants of Dreads still have flesh bodies, badly maimed but still essentially alive. The dread keeps them that way.

The emperor is a dessicated corpse who isn't spending a lot of time in the here and now. Somehting like a Wraithlord (an uber one) might work, as it is designed to be run by a stored soul.

Yeah, if the eldar finally came to their senses and decided to help him, and the imperium came to its senses and decided to let them, I can imagine him striding into battle once more as an even more unkillable machine. Hell, why not just put him in charge of a phantom titan?

Then again, humans and eldar coming to their senses? Pull the other one!

The Emperor has to sit in the throne.

The throne keeps the warp from flooding the Imperial basement/ fruit cellar.

Yeah, but I'm sure the eldar would have the technology to incorporate this into a wraithlord suit or something...

The imperium, however, couldn't do this, so even if they could put empy-poo into a dreadnought, it'd definitely be a last resort.

Doesn't matter. He needs to be on the Golden Throne both to hold the warp gate closed and to guide the Astronomican.

What if they made terra into a gargantuan titan robot monstrosity?

He should have built the golden throne onto a dreadnought chassis kinda like that one inquisitor lord the GK use. Then he would have mobility to hide and jump out to scare the crap out of people that come to the imperial palace with his disgusting rotten visage as a kind of sick practical joke.

But in 'dexes artwork skul is really a mask - it was discussed there before.

That would be mere interpretation, but it isn't actually stated anywhere.
On the contrary, the current rulebook even begins with an introduction saying how "the roiling, arcane powers of the Golden Throne ensure that his great mind endures inside his withered carcass".
