Essentially it's an old-school RPG that's supposed to be an homage to some of those older RPGs, in particular Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment. It's apparently got an all-star team of developers who've worked on RPGs all lined up to work on this thing, too.

I'm just a little amazed at this thing, because at the time of this posting, the kickstarter has been up for one day...and it's gotten $800,000 from around 19,000 backers. In a single day, it's gotten almost to its goal with 31 days yet to go.

Edit: It's official - they vaulted past their goal of 1.1 million in a single day. Stretch goals are now in discussions (because nobody expected them to shatter their goal amount within 48 hours of opening the kickstarter )

This will shatter its goal and no wonder given the pedigree of the people workig on this project.

I am a little worried about the hype though. Very little information has been released so far yet people are already claiming that it will be Planescape:Torment 2.

Obsidian's games have been good but lacking in polish and usually very buggy. Hopefully going back to their isometric(?) roots free from publisher interference will allow them to release a game that can stand alongside Baldur's gate and Planescape.

Personally I hope that the setting will bemore along the lines of Arcanum. I'm getting tired of the Tolkienesque high fantasy. Apparently there is some concept art of a rifleman so fingers crossed.

Really is amazing how much that total has rocketed up. I wonder how much they'll get at the end.

I agree completely. I'll cross my fingers too.

Oh and one mill of funding in one day. Impressive.

I refuse to let myself get excited, but I can still be very interested.

When they started listing off all the games that the devs made, I had to ignore New Vegas and KOTOR2, they were just sorta boring.

The rest however...I nostalgia'd hard.

Hmmmm. Not the words I'd use. The last time they made a game all on their own was Alpha Protocol. And that was... Bad... really bad.

It was buggy, but the actual game, once patched all to hell and back, was not to bad.

Can't attested to that. I didn't play it after release week at all. I guess I'm just not sure I'd call a company that has done only 1 original IP in its entire history (and one that performed poorly) as having any pedigree worth putting stock in.

I hear this a lot, and I'm kind of curious, what was so bad about it? I mean, honestly, other than the game being completely vague about what you were about to say in conversations, I found the game tremendously fun. I thought it was a decent enough game, myself.

I guess it's all about whether you think the name dropping they've done warrants your money. It's definitely worth a $25 gamble to me. They'd have to make some serious mistakes for my to regret that investment, especially in an isometric RPG, probably my favorite style of game. One which has pretty much disappeared in the modern era as everyone who makes RPGs wants to make them first or maaaaybe third person.

Glitches out the wazoo, horrible mechanics, and a bad control scheme.

The later might not be an inhibition for everyone though. I played Too Human for over 300 hours : /

I liked too human. I don't think I ever finished the second play through going with the human upgrade (can't remember why but the machine upgrade was so much more my style). But the little things in the game are what made it stand out for me. Take for example the scene where you shove your weapon into the table and walk away. That weapon was always whatever melee weapon you had equipped. You don't see that very often in gaming.

Some games just get released early. Look at Bloodlines, that was a buggy mess. And it's one of my favorite games of all time. If I get a game and it's bad, I sit on it for a few months, then jump back in rather than burning myself out on the bugs.

There has been a couple of interesting things posted on the kickstarter page. Some fluff, a stretch goal focusing on managing your own fortress and fiefdom and possibly most importantly an in game screenshot. The infinity engine certainly looks like its aged well http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity

I'm pretty positive it's not using the Infinity Engine; it's paying homage to the games that did, but I'm pretty positive it's a whole new engine. I doubt anyone would use a 14 year old engine to make modern games, purists or no. Checking it out though, it's right up my alley. I love love LOVE the Baldur's Gate and Fallout games and I'm totally down for this. I'll back this after this weekend.

I would LOVE to get the fortresses those sound wicked cool. Not to mention I enjoy strategy so it could be fun to have a little of that in between dungeon crawling.

Yes its the unity engine, the game is being built using exactly the same methods that were used in the old infity engine games though. the article that I read wasn't overly clear.

Currently 30 hours left to go on this and it is a possibility that the 3.5 Mil stretch goal will be reached.

I am personally very excited about the game, even more so as more and more updates have come out about it. I am upset that I am unable to donate though. I am hoping that even after kickstarter, they still accept donations for a few weeks so I can toss some money their way.

I'm so tempted to upgrade to the $50 tier... I really think I will for the Codex and stuff... I'm super psyched we got the 3mil stretch goal. I really wanted the Strongholds.

Officially funded at 3.9 million. So close to that 4 million stretch mark.

But damn, nice job to those guys. Hopefully the finished product will be as great as it sounds.

I read somewhere today, they were funded an extra 150k through Paypal, so they did indeed end up meeting the 4k stretch goal.

Update 27 says we beat the 4 million goal by a decent margin!

I think that makes me happier than the "enhanced gameplay" they are adding. Wonder exactly what that means. I saw something about voice acting added, hope it isn't in absolutely everything. :(

upping the graphics, the sound track being recorded from real musicians, more plot, more quests, more fluff.
