What are on the back of the Chaos Space marines? Those little spheres on the ends of those poles that stick out horizontally.

They are part of their backpacks...The backpack is the power generator for power armour if memory serves, and I think those are the vents to let out gas or something

Do you mean the backpacks?

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

I do believe that they are just part of the backpack.

They're chaos balls, they store the ruinous powers of chaos within them.

Those things are the reason why there can't be female space marines.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

The regular SM backpacks have them too. On the CSM ones they're just stretched out/mutated.

Though on a serious note, the marine backpacks have stabilising jets and figured that's what those were. They aren't really vents, I think those would be the smaller "pipes" towards the base of the pack.

As old as it is, it's rather cool to dust off from time to time in these discussions.

Huh, stabilizing jets?

I always assumed that they were exhaust ports. However power armor power packs work, certainly there would be some sort of waste byproduct.

In plainer terms, I thought they were mufflers.

So basically they're just there to make sure a marine doesn't fall over in his armour while running.

That artwork is also from Rogue Trader, they might just be vents at this point.

In the RT fluff they were designed more as actual 'Space' marines, hence the magnetic boots and stabilizing jets.

Magnetic boots could be amusing when curb stomping necrons...

They're the vents for the powerpack of their power armor. So the thing doesn't overheat and cook the Marine I imagine...
