So as it says in the title im looking to include grey knights as allies for my guard. I want to try out some other armies and possibly expand that and build up another army. So far i looked into blood angels and i have the possibility to get some assault termies and a crusader landraider but am unsure if i want to continue so ive also looked into grey knights. I know nothing of grey knights and as a guard player i dont use psychic powers at all and am used to not being in close combat and if so i die. So a person at my local game store has offered me kaldor draigo and 10 paladins, 4 with psycannons. the unit has been known to rip apart armies itself but the only flaw is its around 800pts i believe.
So i guess what im asking is that if anyone could give me a good list for grey knights as allies and give a brief explanation of how it would be used. My guard is set up for a gunline strategy.

What point levels do you usually play at? Could you give us an an example of a usual list you use?
The main ways to use an allied assault-based unit are to either hold them back as counter assault, or attack aggressively with them, to take away opposing objectives and strike at his important units.
Draigo and Paladins represent a large points investment, as you mentioned, so I don't think you can really sit them back and just play defense with them. To get their value you need to be a bit more aggressive, moving up at least to midfield, doing some damage with shooting and positioning to assault anything scary that's headed for your lines.

Thanks for the reply! We usually play 2000pts and above so that allies are more useful. My guard list at the moment is 2 platoons each with 4 infantry squads. 1 with autocannons as heavy weapons and in the other platoon each squad having a plasma gun. I have 2 standard leman russ and a manticore as heavies. I hide that behind the defense line and shoot whatever comes at me. So a standard gunline and the idea of having grey knoght or blood angels as an ally is to have them as a powerful buffer to strike the enemy and keep them at bay while the guard continues to shoot.

Draigo + 10x Paladins with 4x Psycannons is going to run you 905 points of your 2000. I wouldn't even go forward and say thats an ally but almost your main army force. haha A more reasonable "Ally" force would be like an inquisitor with Terminator bodyguard for like 225 minimum points requirement.

Grey Knights don't really suppliment guard very well. If you want MEQs that can deal out loads of shots then play GK. Having a handful of MEQ in a guard army will mean they will get targetted and killed quickly. In a foot list, the points would be better spent on more boots on the ground, in a mech list you'd want more tin cans. Terminators cost 8 times more than an infantrymen but are a less less durable. They also have much less dakka than a comparible infantry squad.
Against a boltgun it comes out the same, but given how much high strength AP1/2 dakka there is out there, and that GK termies can't take stormshields, I think you'd be mad to take them in a guard list

Fair enough.
Actually I just realised that Inquisitors can give stubborn for a rediculously small point cost. 65 points for 2+/5++ and a 2+ LOS. That's pretty awesome.

I've used the following GK allies with my Guard a few times, with good success:
- Inquisitor; Terminator Armour, Psycannon, Psyker (Divination)
- 10x Grey Knight Terminators; 2x Psycannon, 2x Hammer, Stave (Justicar), Psybolt Ammo.
Runs around 600 ish points, but gives you a pretty mean shooting unit (i.e. If you choose the Primaris Divination power you'll get 12x Psycannon shots w/re-rolls and 16x S5 storm bolter shots w/re-rolls) as well as a beastly counter-assault unit.
Drop the Stave if you want to save points; or you could swap it for a Brotherhood Banner for the extra attacks, etc.

Thanks for the replies again, i did think that the grey knight force i listed was crazy on points! Terminators are units ive always wanted to try out or have but im not sure as to what army would have the best option for them. I looked at blood angels and either having 7 termies and 1 assault cannon and throw some hq with them in a crusader landraider. I then also thought about the assault termies in the land raider but i like having the ability to shoot haha. So ive also looked at grey knights and thought about their termies but wasnt sure how they would be or what would be good for using them as allies.

I've been looking at doing exactly the same thing with same criteria haha, tough assault-like termies to fit with gun line guard.
I really like the blood Angels background so I've focused on them, planning sanguinary guard as flying terminators with Dante to make them troops. Or death company look fun. The problem with BA termies is they would need the 'troop tax' too.
Another possibility are dark angels deathwing termies with belial, cheap (relatively) troop termies. For like approx 350pts you can take belial and a 5 man termie squad (iirc).
For grey knights I wanted to do them too but they're just too many points for paladins, possibly a 5 man unit, bit I agree with the other advice you've had - inquisitor and termies as again its a troop choice and cheaper.
Good luck!

Depending on what you are willing to do, perhaps a GK army with allied guard would be more effective. Allied Guard can fit a lot of troops into two full platoons! toss in a LRBT and Vendetta and the requisite CCS and you essentially have a guard army without the restrictions placed on GK options.
- As an aside... while I have GKs, I just can't bring myself to include those in my guard army for fluff reasons. The knowledge that according to fluff the GK are going to kill my courageous little soldiers, which have fought to save the Imperium side by side with the GKs, just irks me to no end....

very true grey knights are expensive and after reading there fluff i did see how they kill off basically anyone who helps them and anyone good enough to live gets their mind wiped anyways. Still gunna do some browsing and see what army could give me the best load out for termies as I would like to be able to shoot and assault with them. grey knights still look nice and would be nice to use but blood angels are still in my mind lol.
