This is all still rough and something I'm working through in my head. Getting this out "on paper" should help me organize what I want to accomplish with this warband.

Name: Grandsons of Horus or Horus' Wrath or the Horus Legacy... Still working on it.

Background: Following Abbaddon's ___ Black Crusade, a Chaos lord (former captain of the Luna Wolves) and his Tzeentch Sorcerer BFF have splintered off from the Black Crusade, feeling that Abbaddon has lost his way, along with his sanity. With them is a company's worth of heritage Luna Wolves (Sons of Horus) that are fed up with dealing with other legions and renegade chapters and want to take the fight to the Imperium in their own way.

Makeup: They'll mostly be Renegade Space Marines with Chaos Undivided and Tzeentch marks/icons. There might be a few units that follow Khorne/Nurgle, but they would be the exception rather than the norm. After all, having followed Abbaddon for hundreds of years, they will certainly have been exposed to these ruinous powers. At most, that would be a Havok or Chosen squad with a mark/icon.

I won't be fielding the Legion Troops (Plague Marines, Thousand Sons, Khorne Berzerkers), but I'll occasionally take a few Tzeentch (and only Tzeentch) Chaos Daemons allies to go with them. Perhaps some screamers, a Daemon prince, some flamers, and pink horrors. I'll perhaps have a 1,000 point sideboard to pull from, when all is said and done. These would represent the ruinous powers that the Tzeentch Sorcerer "deals" with from time to time, and what he can call upon to help the warband.

There will be havocks, chosen, standard troops, and some heavy vehicles. I'm not sure about Obliterators. Perhaps they have made an arrangement with some members of the Obliterator cult where they keep their vehicles in repair in exchange for any xenos or rare technology they find in their endeavors.

Colors: Blue and Silver will be the primary colors, with bone white being the accent color. They will wear the Eye of Horus on their uniforms, as they feel they are the true, "pure" descendents of Horus. Pure is a rather loose term, as they will have some Nurgle/Khorne/Tzeentch worshipers in their midst. I painted one test model up last night (Dark Vengeance Chosen Marine) and I'll post it later.

Thoughts? Over-the-top silly?

If you're going to focus on the whole "loyalty to Horus and his legacy" thing you could just call them the Sons of Horus. Say that they're the last remaining marines fighting for what Horus had originally intended and therefore kept the name in honor of their Primarch. I think the fluff sounds good, but fleshing out some of the character of the army a little more would help it. Here's a few question that I, as a reader, have.

At what point did they just randomly decide "Okay, Abaddon, enough is enough"? Did something happen between Abaddon and this Chaos Lord?

Why does the sorcerer seem to have a special affiliation with Tzeentch over the other gods of Chaos? You felt his affiliation with Tzeentch was significant enough to mention, so it must be somewhat important.

How many do they number?

@james999999: Thanks, man!

@Darth: Good questions!

1. When/why did they decide enough was enough? In the Night Lords books, the encounters with Abbaddon has shown to be careless with his troops. Whether that's fair or not is another conversation. Additionally, Abbaddon is working with marines from all of the Legions, along with recent renegade marines, as well as cultists and Chaos Daemons. At all times, his obsession with the Black Crusade is putting the ends/goals before his men and Legion. This Chaos Lord wants to put his Legion back as what's most important, not wheeling and dealing with every other Legions' ideals and goals.

2. As for the sorcerer, I figured that the Chaos Lord would need an adviser for his second in command. A chaos Sorcerer seemed like a logical choice. (Also, I want to field a chaos sorcerer!) As for Tzeentch, that seemed like the one chaos power that would fit my plans for this warband. They aren't berserkers like Khorne's followers, and neither Slaanesh nor Nurgle has the aesthetic that I feel fits the heritage Sons of Horus.

The chaos warlord will make grudging short-term packs with Tzeentch in exchange for a host of daemons to appear to help with whatever endeavor they're about to undertake. The price will eventually be some of his men falling as possessed marines, much to the war band's detriment and will piss the Lord off as it occurs. I didn't say they were good deals or that the war band would remain "pure!"

3. I figure a companies or two's worth, around 100-200 marines, give or take. I perhaps will have a Fabius Bile type character/apothecary that will begin harvesting/collecting gene seed to rebuild the Legion. Not sure on this point.

As for calling them the Sons of Horus, I think the Chaos Lord feels that Abbaddon has run that name through the mud enough to sully it. So, he's come up with a new way of serving his fallen Primarch's legacy. Also, I'm not sure I want to call them Sons of Horus.
