I picked Legion because I am defense-ish too.

But... I didn't do this to play defensively, I did it because Legion is a very agressive army so I'm trying to break out of that mindset

This game rewards risk taking and smart agressive play. You can't just run straight ahead (most of the time) and you do need a plan. Legion has speed and power, but can also run a little expensive point-wise. You can build an attrition list with Legion (pThagroth, Carnivean, etc.) but most things lead towards killing power.

It won't be easy to run a defensive army like you can run Tau in 40k, because the ranges are significantly shorter, however, try looking into the retribution ranged units/solos and 'jacks, I hear they have some quite nasty shooting. There really isn't much defense happening in Warmachine, it's mostly aggressive play, but if you create a good strategy to split up your guys and effectively re-position from one cover area to the next you might have a better chance. That's all I can help you with though, since i'm not playing retribution as of yet.

With that said, I shall back away slowly and ominously and disappear in a puff of smoke, then smuggle some fruit across the border in order to stay competitive with the veggie cartel.

If you really want to play defensive, go Khador.

Of the two forces you're looking at, Legion is much more forgiving than the Retribution. Also, Legion is easier to play the same army with a change in Warlocks.

My advice for anyone who is indecisive is to try Protectorate of Menoth. They have a wide range of solid infantry and can run more jacks than the other warmachine armies. Protectorate also provide a uniquely warmachine experience with strong synergy, buffs, and order of operations. The faction is somewhat more defensive than average, but not so tilted in that direction they can't mount an offense. They also have the strong advantage of being a part of the two-player starter.

The game is designed to play offensively. If you can get in a Chess mindset then that will help you alot. Expect to trade peices back and forth with models and then take out the king to win.

Yes this is a bit of an oversimplification, but in the barest essence that is the game.

All battle boxes are pretty well balanced and the same price. The point cost in them ranges from 11-14 points. Welcome to Warmahordes.

playing defensive? pfft! off with you! this game is all about aggression. "play like you got a pair" does not want, or encourage defensive play as you're used to from 40k. gunlines will not work. holding back and popping off shots while you scoot areound the edges of the battlefield like a wussy little girl will avail you nothing. there are no tau in warmachine. none. they got steamrolled!

OK, trashtalking aside, and in all seriousness, define for me "defensive play"? if youre defensive play is about refusing to engage, and holding off at long range, then this game is not for you. warmachine encourages aggression, risk taking, taking the fight to your enemy, applying axe to face liberally and repeatedly and constantly pushing yourself, seizing the initiative and literally, "going for the throat".

that said, PLYGAP does not refer to "rushing forward" like orks do, although an eButcher theme force of doom reavers plays by this playbook, and does rather well with it! there are elements of defensive play through tactics such as attrition and denial. but ultimately, everything you do will always be based on being hugely aggressive compared to 40k standards.

regarding the armies you've picked. Legion is a straight up monster-heavy, glass cannony alpha striking brawling faction. they charge in, and kill stuff. repeat. retribution are combined arms. a bit of shooty. a bit of melee. their jacls come in two styles: terran goliath, and protoss, to use starcraft terms.

all the battle boxes are good value. you may never use the pieces again, but id always recommend the purchase of a starter set to get to grips with the basics, and figure out if the game is for you. for what its worth though, pick it up, and welcome to the iron kingdoms!
