tervigons and hive tyrants are all characters right? cant you just put them all into 1 squad with a trygon or 30 gaunts or something and make look out sirs on 2ups and allocate evenly the way they dirty grey knights did for about a month?

I have seen no talk of this at all so i am assuming there is a hole i am not seeing. feedback would be great.

They are characters not independent characters, as such they don't have the rule that would allow them to join units.
Note: Tyrant guards have a special permission to be joined by a tyrant.

ok. i guess i got confused because it said (ch) next to their name and it said the same thing next to paladins, nobs, and wolf guard before the f.a.q. updates. how where all paladins independent characters before the update than? i see nothing about it in the codex.

At least one person on another thread suggested he likes to put a tyranid prime in carnifex broods, as it is an independent character.

I understand that tyranid primes are independent characters. it says in my codex. i was just wondering how paladins where independent characters before the 1.1 update. was it because they had a (ch) next to their name in the big rule book? I'm sure there is an answer i just can't seem to find it.

They weren't, they where just characters only passed LoS on 4+ and where unable to leave the unit. In general a character is a sarge type guy who tends to lead a unit, and an independent character is usually much more important individual like a warboss, tyranid prime or captain who will pass LoS on 2+ and is free to hop around units to his hearth's content.

Well, there weren't Independent Characters before the update.

Independent Character and Character are two different things.

The (ch) marking in the summary simply means Character.
For them to be Independent Characters they need to have the Independent Character rule in their entry in their codex.

Because when they were characters, they could still Look Out Sir! on a roll of 4+ to spread wounds around, all members could issue and accept challenges, and all of them had Precision Strikes and Precision Shots.
That's quite a big difference in both offence and defence.

Something did change the paladins no longer are any kind of character.

...not to mention their codexes have special rules that allow them to either join other units (much like the Tyrant has a special rule that allows him to join tyrant guard even though he is not an independent character) or be taken as an upgrade to that squad.
