First off sorry for the picture quality. I only have a crummy cell phone camera.

I am having trouble making decent looking exhuast/black smoke stains coming off the stacks on my rhinos/r.backs. As of now I am just washing the areas with badab black and kind of trying to make it trail off. I wanted the rhino to have heavier staining and the razor to have just small patches. I feel like it doesn't look quite right but I don't know of any way to do it better. Tips would be appreciated, thanks.

For me, I dry brush a brown on, and then dry brush a black on top of it.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Dry brushing black is the way to go, a wash just won't look right.make the strokes away from the exhaust ports. See if you can find a copy of how to paint citadel tanks and they have a bunch of useful stuff in there.

I thought about doing that but thought it may come out too bright. I will give it a shot though as I am not very happy with them as they sit. Thanks

Black pigments will give you the effect you are lookin for. I've done it on my tanks as well:

I've got two tutorials that might help. These are for gun barrels, but I have used both on exhaust systems as well.
How to paint soot stained barrels: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2009/05/painting-soot-stained-gun-barrels-quick.html
How to paint heat stained barrels: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-paint-heat-stained-gun-barrels.html

When people ask me, "How do you build your army?"
I tell them its "The ten-zero factor, coolness ten, combat effectiveness... zero."
