So, I've had a pretty long break from 40k. I want to get back into it after seeing the new chaos stuff coming back. I have a lot of unpainted but assembled Space Marines sitting in a case. Now, I was wandering, does anyone have a good idea on how to.. Chaos/Renegade them up a bit? I dont want to just proxy them, I'd like to do something about imperial markings and such. Do I paint red Xs over them, do I file them off, otherwise disfigure them? Just looking for general tips!

Alternatively, you could just add some Skulls and Spikes?
Spikes and skulls are too easy....

You could always deface the Imperial symbols on the armor in some way (like you mentioned). Possibly use green stuff to smooth over chest plates? Although, they may look like man bewbs. I never tried that.
You know, some of the space marines that went renegade didnt get all spiky and worship chaos/demons. From memory, in the last Chaos Marine codex that had chapters, some of the chapters couldn't field demons because they never technically swore allegiance to chaos or something. Someone else who actually played them can probably help better, but I believe Alpha Legion was one that couldn't field demons.

I'd take a look at some of the old metal chaos figures for inspiration and pick up pack of green stuff and convert your heart out.

Yeah, so long as you're happy for them to represent recently defected marines, just paint them in their original colours but then overpaint some sort of defacing/defiling of their imperial icons.
