Well if you play DA then you need 5 box of assault terminators ,to start with.
In general 6th is about 3 things . shoting. flyers and getting first turn so you can get first blood before your opponent.

The first thing you are going to want to do is to pick up either Samael or to convert a Belial model to make either your ravenwing bikers or your terminators scoring. Then you are going to want to pick up a lot of those models and field them. Terminators as troops are probably the most powerful and the most awesome thing in the codex, so take as much advantage of it as you can. People will tell you that Assault Terminators, particularly Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield termies, are the most powerful, but Tactical Terminators with either an Assault Cannon or a Cyclone Missile Launcher are still quite viable.

Dark angels only have 1 terminator choice, deathwing but you can take all that stuff in one squad

My advice to you as a noob would be simply don't limit yourself to just GW miniatures or materials.

I returned after more than a decades absence last year and I'm frankly staggered by the choice of alternative bits and models. There are things that GW don't make as options, better looking things, cheaper things or simply alternatives.

Of course, if you play at a GW that largely goes out the window as far as models go, but there's still plenty of options for paints and tools.

I've played Dark Angels since 3rd edition, they're actually pretty fairly flexible as to how you want to use them. I started with a somewhat static gun line back in the day, then went to foot sloggers, then light mechanized and Deathwing in 4th, and finally a few Drop Pods in 5th. You can do a lot with the codex, I can tell you I still like using Land Speeders and whirlwind. And I have had a lot of fun with a pod list backed up with Deathwing. They're still marines so use the flexibility in the list to keep your opponents guessing. When you think they get used to your army and tactics, then switch it up. Keep the initiative and attack.

More often than not these days, right up until I left the states, I usually played my Imperial Guard Army, which uses the metal steel legion models. I used to field that as either mainly infantry with SP artillery support, or mostly mechanized/armour with only a unit or two on foot (defending objective holders).

I had eldar from 2nd edition to the beginning of 5th. I also Had a small Dark Eldar army for a few games last edition. Sold both of those to my friends as I just didn't have the room to store all those armies well. That and my IG kept growing bigger.

Like, in any case force concentration and coordination can be the key to victory. Infantry, armour and artillery working in combined arms is a beautiful thing. To be most successful in lightning war, you need to keep the initiative. Shoot, move, coordinate. Keep up the pressure, then just have fun and let the dice do the rest!

If you dont want to play DW , then using the DA codex makes no sense as normal marines do everything DA do only way better. better bike armies , better librarians, I would ally a terminator libby or SW rune priest in to a DW army by the way , better tacticals , better power armor veterans , scouts [telion] .

I keep Dark Angels because I like their back story, their iconography and paint scheme. Plus Lion El Jonson reminds me of an almost Arthurian figure. That and Caliban sounds like House Atreides' Calidan from Dune, with their green hawk symblol and all.

I like the fluff, I like the character of the army. That's why I'll continue to run it, as is, non DW apart from one squad.

In any event hopefully a new DA codex will be in the works soon.

Am saying you cant like the way they look or their fluff or that you cant pain them green. it is just that using codex DA to playin anything else then a terminator army makes no sense . marine have the same tacticals/dev/assaults/veterans only better for less points paid . they can even make bike armies with a sm captin or the khan .

i picked up 3 boxes of terminators two days ago, so my DW army is in the works

im also thinking of starting an imperial guard army, just a small one, for use as an ally force.

also picked up a bastion for my fortification

Oh! and a box of grey knights, just because i think they are cool

What I play:

Dark Eldar: my current style is to have the crap kicked out of me regularly by one of my sons running GK. Basically, trying to figure out how to make them work in 6th.

Necrons: I, however, refuse to give in to completely annihilating my opponents and have yet to purchase a night scythe... I do, however, regularly field a monolith and refuse to take any sort of allies. Bear in mind they were my first army about 5 years ago and I'm not 100% on board with all of the fluff changes... Getting closer though.

Codex Marines: Salamanders, Imperial Fists and White Scars. Depends on my mood, but fun for the whole family. Sometimes I field lots of terminators (20), sometimes lots of bikes (20+). Just depends on if I'm in the show up in their face and beat the snot out of them in a slugfeast or simply want to drive in a big circle while shooting. I did pick up the DV box and originally intended to repurpose the DA in it... But after looking at them a little closer I'm just going to keep them as DA. Although, I won't buy the current codex. They'll just stay counts as until it ships (probably later this year, my money is on November).

Recently I got the badab war books from forgeworld, so I've been trying out various lists with Huron. From what I've seen, it's not that far away from how I think the new CSM's are going to play. Specifically, using "meat shields" of guardsman/cultists to soak up enemy fire while getting into position to hammer them with the big stuff.

Of course, I'm more into the have fun, do something unexpected and see how it works out sort of game. If I happen to win, all the better.

Dark angels are getting an update in a couple months, so don't buy the dex yet, but three things won't change: Deathwing, Ravenwing, and Greenwing. So 6/7 sets of Tactical Terminators with three cyclones and three assault cannons are still gonna be fine and dandy in 2k. Hell, even sprinkle in a few chainfists for flavor

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And for what I play is BA, BT, DA, and DE. But Deathwing is my main force

Fully paint and collet one working army first (at your standard game lvl 1k 1,5k 2k what ever) then get a secondary army. Generally speaking, while GK are fun, they are also marines, i would recommend you get IG as a second army that plays different that the one you already have.

That place over there.

I like the look of the knights. All top of the line tech and crazy details on base troops. Beats the look of standard marines or the assembly line of necron warriors.

But yeah, finish an army first and go from that. Maybe ally the knights with your guard so you can use both.

If you want your main force to be DA, then go for main shooty DW with an allied BA Terminator Epistolary (Divination) and a Scout Team w/ locator beacon or a main assaulty DW with an allied SM Sevrin Loth (Biomancy) and a scout team w/locator beacon
