Subject: Black Templar/Raven Guard Questions:

Been Around the Block

I'm a fan of black and I want to paint either Black Templars or Raven Guard.
There are things I like and dislike about these chapters and I hope you guys can help me choose.
Raven Guard:
At first I liked that they were all black, but then I googled some pictures and they ended up with more colours on different photoes.
So that kind off confused me, so maybe anyone could help me with my questions about the Ravens.
1) Commanders, Squad Leaders and other leaders, what should be painted white on them?
2) For the terminators, I saw Black Templars having two white, but also one white and one black shoulderpad? Which one is the correct and how about their helmets?
3) Is green the only trimming for the shoulder pads for Raven Guard or are there other colors for other companies? I saw a bike squad with red, for assault I supose
4) I do belive this is a personal preferance, loads of gold details, skulls and what not or silver? I'm thinking more gold the higher rank
I like to ask questions like this before I go to bed, that way I can wake up tomorrow with hopefully answers and I don't have to do any googling. Goood night!

In my opinion, Raven Guard are probably the coolest of the original Legions. Even with all the black, when painted well they can be quite stunning.
Even though they are defined as a Codex Astartes-compliant chapter, they follow a different color pattern for their shoulder pad trim. Most Codex chapters use their shoulder pad trim to identify their company, Raven Guard use the trim on the right shoulder pad (the one with the tactical designation on it) to identify their combat role.
It follows this:

And some, I assume, are good people." |

What of the Templars turned you off? We may be able to help if you elaborated.

Thank you Scooty, I almost fell in love with the idea of Raven guard! Is it so that Raven Guard use a lot of beaky helmets?
What turned me off Black Templars? Well, I don't like the white inside the shoulder as I find it pulling to much focus of the marines and making them look broad.
Another thing is I am a little bit unsure how much gold/silver I should use for the details of the marines.

well for normal templars you won't get away from the white shoulder pads, but you can do various things to make it better, i use an off white/dirty white colour something more akin to an ivory for my white, and the metalics are up to you, but if you say, paint the eagle a different color the model is pulled together pretty well.
