A few days old, but I just noticed it.

If you voted on Armies on Parade at my local GW store you'd be part of a contest where the "winner" gets to buy a Collectors Edition or Gamers Edition of the 6th ed rulebook at full GW price.

Isn't that a generous prize?

Ouch. At Helsinki the contest was apparently to guess the number of bitz in a big bin of bitz. The reward: that bin of bitz. Apparently the answer was 1050, so not a bad haul.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I.. what happens if you don't want to?

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I don't understand, you can buy one anyway, so why would they offer the opportunity to do what you can do anyway as a prize?

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Did you get the space marine pinned to a cork and drybrushed gold as your prize for the painting competition??

See OP. They were limited edition versions and were presumably set-a-side as "prizes"

Pretty ridiculous and not surprising at all. Can't make this gak GW does up anymore.

See, this is actually a good concept and prize....Though maybe it's just because of my love of bitz (then again, what 40ker doesn't love bitz?)

Yeah, I saw that.

But the OP still confuses me. It sounds like something got lost in translation or the shop is silly.

But hey, it'd still be cheaper than eBay for a CE or GE.

It's probably both, hehe.

- People vote at Armies on Parade
- A voter wins in a "lottery" or whatever
- The prize is getting to buy one of the limited versions of the new rulebook.

It is indeed absolutely ridiculous.

No, I got that part.

I can kind of understand why they're doing it since the CE/GE are no longer available and go for obscene amounts on eBay.

Just not sure why it's really worth posting about.

It's just symbolic of GW's current cynical approach with just about everything

Because winning a prize you have to buy is pretty funny (as in clown funny), and people generally like funny things.

This. Anyone still remember when GW sold bits themselves?

hey I wouldn't mind a chance to buy a gamers edition rulebook, I would then sell the rulebook on the bay and the bits I already have. I want the bag.

We have various painting competitions at my local GW, namely in two categories, one with a prize of the 'Golden Goblin' (a Goblin Boss painted in Gold on a pedestal like base) and another with no prize.

They're fun to enter though, so I'm not complaining.

I do remember a few years back there being actually quite good prizes for various raffles and competitions, but that was a few years back, and we all know that GW has got progressively more stingy about giving stuff away etc

My local Gw did a series of 3 "masterclasses" - you buy something that fits the theme - Squad, Tank/monster, Character, you then have to paint it instore, infront of the staff, across the week and the 'best' (voted by staff) won "big prizes" (well, thats what they advertised when they were selling you the models and glue):

Squad got you a .... pot of paint
Tank got you a .... paintbrush
Character (which was meant to be the biggest prize of all) - A used poster....
