Hi everyone,

Can anyone shed any light on this:

The older expansion codexes, Assassins, Armageddon, etc - Can you use these still?

Are they officially removed somewhere?

Was looking at some of the options available for unique forces (purely for a laugh - not competitively) but was wondering if they are still technicaly within the rules.

Thanks

Karl

They are not usable anymore simply because of edition changes.

And Assassins are in the GK codex as a unit option, and they were also in the old Daemon Hunter and Witchhunter codices too.

If your opponent does not mind then go for it.

Tournaments will usually only have the newest codexes as usable codexes.

As a rule of thumb, if its no longer for sale on GW's website then its safe to consider that they're no longer playable without your opponents explicit permission.

The only one that was ever 'officially' removed was Codex: Assassins, back when Codex: Daemon Hunters was released.

GW don't tend to put out specific statements saying 'You can't use this codex any more...' ... they just sort of leave it up to players to stop using them when the rules move on to the point where they are no longer usable without some serious tweaking.

Because that's the professional way to keep your game up to date.

What about eye of terror? Was that one not retired?

I don't think they 'retired' the codex as a whole, although now that I think about it they may have FAQd out the Cadian and Ulthwe lists when the Guard and Eldar codexes were redone.

Well if I can find a copy I may have a few friendly games with a 13th company game.

GW doesn't retire codices, its more like they just become unplayable with the new rules to the point where they literally are unusable.

Except they're not an 'expansion codex' as per the subject of this thread.

Again, its one of the armies i love.

But if i were to turn up to an event, and they say "sorry, cant use that" then what argument do they technically have? If GW have not retired the codex.

Not trying to be an idiot here, but am really interested in doing some themed armies based on some of the older codexes, but dont want to find that they have opponents that are saying that its no longer a valid codex, and someone ends up bringing out an announcement that GW has made X number of years ago (but i doubt that).

The codex requires 3rd ed space wolves codex and space marines codex to run it properly. I had a look at it.

You could throw something together using 5th ed space wolves codex but it isn't anything like what it was supposed to be.

The best argument of all: It's my event, and I'm not allowing that codex.

Or: That codex doesn't have support for 6th edition.

Tournaments should include a list of allowed codexes in their rules packages. If they don't and you want to use an older codex, it's a good idea to ask prior to the event, particularly if the codex you're wanting to use needs some modification to function withing the current rules.

If you can't find a current GW FAQ for it, it is unlikely to be considered a 'current' valid codex, since anything released prior to 6th edition needs an FAQ to function. That being said, if your TO is willing to provide some event-specific house rules to update that codex, that's entirely up to him.

It's their event, they can allow or deny players entry if they so wish. Usually they'll have a list of valid codices you can use anyway, or at the very least will require players to submit lists before the event itself and so will be able to tell you to change your list at that stage.

Armageddon, Pry System, Armageddon Sector, Armageddon Sub-sector, Segmentum Solar.

Any expansion codex, codex or set of rules is still current and playable if they are the latest rendition of those rules, at least that's what I've been lead to believe.
