Subject: Help needed with first 6th ed nids list

Hi all,
I have been playing tyranids for several years now and am preparing to play my first 6th ed games. I am unlikely to face any fliers and am likely to come up agains trukk based orks, mech guard (possibly with gk allies) and maybe necrons (though not having many of the new vehicles). I am still digesting the 6th ed rules so am not 100% comfortable with them yet. In 5th I used to use lots of outlflabking genestealers and deepstrikers but that seems less effective from what I've read on dakkadakka.
Any comments on the list and how to get it up to 1500 points would be really helpful.
Troop Tervigon - ts, ag, catalyst - 195
2 Zoanthrope - 120
2 hive guard - 100
1 trygon prime - 240 (probably should get rid of the prime now)
20 termagants - 100
20 gargoyles - ts, ag - 160
Prime - 95
Lash and sword, talons
5 Warriors - 180
Deathspitters, barbed strangler
1 carnifex - bio plasma - 180 (I'd like to make this a second trygon but will not have time to buy/paint one before I next play)
1370
Other stuff I have - foot hive tyrant and hive guard, 26 hormagaunts, 20 genestealers + broodlord (I could use these as ygmarls), 3 raveners, 2 lictors, 1 venomthrope.

I'm not seeing a big problem with the Trygon Prime; you've got plenty of big stuff in this list, I'd advise bulking up to 1500 with the addition of some Hormagaunts. The biggest thing 6e did for the 'Nids is Overwatch, big enough Termagant mobs are now a daunting prospect to charge, I'd advise adding another mob or two.

Thanks mate. I was worried about overwatch and particularly how bad it could be for hormogaunts. I guess I'd need a really big mob of them to survive long.
My other worry for this is army is that I don't have a really killy assault unit. Normally my genestealers would fill this role. I'm particularly worried about running up against something like a big mob of ork nobs with power klaws that could tear through my MCs. Will I be able to mob them with gaunts or do I need a really aggressive cc unit?

In 6th... heres where some good buffs are
Termagaunts with devourers, over watch is epic on them, not to mention its already an amazing upgrade.
Hormagaunts--- run them with toxins and run them oput of synaptic range... cheap amazing melee units, just be mindful of overwatch.
toxin sacs on mcs... IF you have a floating pool of points.. id put toxin on any MC that your planning on putting into combat.
* toxin sacs wound on a 4+ UNLESS you would wound on a lower number AND you get to reroll failed wounds... so now a trygon with toxin sacs has reroll to hit and to wound AND most things he will be wounding on a 2+... not bad to have some rerolls.
Hive guard. Ignore cover rule also ignores JINK on flyers. HAHA flyers.
Genestealers took a HUGE hit.... they are just to pricey to take losses from over watch, best scenario IF you are going to run them make sure to run them against something... not so shooty. like vehicles, make sure they GET the charge, make sure there are more than 5 lol.
as for your list.
Tyrants... need them. period. big debate over winging them or not, I prefer not to. I like the armored shell much better it makes him just a bit harder to kill for troops that dont spam ap2 or better.
Unless you have a huge number of higher priority targets...
Zoans NEED a spod. I dont run a spod for mine or for my DOOM, but thats because I dont have spod models NOR do i intend to run reserves... I just dont like them. I use mine to run up the field in a pack of other high priority forcing my targets to painfully choose what to kill.
* they work MUCH better in spods however especially DOOM.
I prefer my trygons to be primed and having toxin sacs. yes thats a 50 point boost.. but it does work. Hell prime gives thet shadow in the warp and doubles the amount they fire AND gives their shots 6" more range... cmon really?
carnifex... meh depends on how he is used.. id rather field a different heavy support choice. either another trygon(prime) or a t fex both very expensive.. Far more effective.
if you run a tervigon try and make him a troops choice... hes a decent objective holder. I dont like the model or how they are used I avoid them because they just dont fit in my army, but a lot of people swear by them.

Thanks for the detailed and thorough advice! In light of what you said I have changed the list. I don't have a suitable representative for a pod and worry deep striking the zoans would make them a suicide unit so have took them out. I have also taken your advice on the tyrant even though mine is not modelled with the best weaponry. I'd love to try devil guants somewhere down the line and may start converting some soon. I wanted to prime the trygon but ran out of points. Here is the redone list:
Troop Tervigon - ts, ag, catalyst - 195
5 ygmarls - 115
2 hive guard - 100
1 trygon - 200
18 termagants - 90
18 gargoyles - ts, ag - 142
Prime - 95
Lash and sword, talons
5 Warriors - 180
Deathspitters, barbed strangler
18 hormagaunts - ts - 144
Hive tyrant - heavy venom cannon, armoured shell - 235
Do I have enough anti vehicle?

If you're still worried about taking out armor, and you really think not having Zoans is ideal, I would cut the gargoyles and add another MC, maybe a carnifex (I realize this isn't enough free points even for a completely basic fex though...), just to give your opponent something else to shoot at / worry about, while also adding a unit that can actually take out a LR or monolith.
Otherwise, I would say the Zoanthropes were well placed in this list, even without a spore. Your opponent has enough to shoot at with the Ymgarls (assuming you deep strike them into area terrain, or outflank), the Trygon (which I like primed, but here when you're low on points is fine), and the 2+ Tyrant. Zoan's give you that nice balance of anti-tank and anti-infantry in one unit, which is nice.
