Subject: What more should I get for my Tau?

So I'm thinking of expanding my Tau army, Maybe getting a Hammerhead with Railgun. Though I dont want to get too much things before the new codex comes out (If it is comming..) Anyways, What I got right now is
1 Devilfish
6 Crisis Suits (One might be O'Shovah, He has the sword atleast)
3 Broadside
12 Gun Drones
34 Fire Warriors
26 Kroot
1 Ethereal
And Aun'Va with his bodyguards
So, Does anyone have any sugestions on what to get to expand the army? I'd like to be able to reach 1500 points.. Not sure exactly how many points I got right now but I dont realy use the gun drones (Exept for standins for shield drones) or the Kroot..

Personally I'd grab 1-2 more devilfish. At Lear one sky ray(it comes with stuff for hammerhead and slurry may get buffed?). At least 6-7 more suits(maxed out list, personally I have enough for maxed out with oshavvah).and I'd consitter more broadsides as well

are you going to keep talking about it, or do something already? |

As above. You should always buy the Sky Ray box over the Hammerhead box. They cost the same, yet the Sky Ray box allows you to build both, the HH-box does not. And if you build a HH from the Sky Ray box, you essentially have a sprue of SkyRay parts for free.

But.. What would I use the skyray parts for if I build the hammerhead? I cant realy do magnetising or converting, I'm not very good at such things, So if I want a hammerhead and buy the skyray, I end up with a uselss skyray sprue that I have no use for as i'm too stupid to covern and magnetise..
As I suspect they dont have enough turet parts to build all types of turrets to be able to change them right? Most likely not. As for buying alot more suits, I kind of want to wait and see if the rumors of new suits with the new codex is true.. XD
As for getting more Devilfish, They are so expensive (In points) that I hardly ever use the one I have.. I just feel that 80 points is a large point sink for a not super good transport..

I think they come with both a sky ray turret and a hammerhead turret. As long as you don't glue the sky ray turret in place, you can swap it for the hammerhead turret.

The cool thing about the Hammerhead turret is it doesn't need to be magnetised. The guns sit on top of a fairly chunky peg. Just make both guns and don't glue one on. The Skyray kit comes with both a Hammerhead turret and guns, and also a Skyray turret. Both turrets sit fine unmagnetised in the turret ring on the hull. Buying a Skyray gives you both Skyray and Hammerhead, and both Hammerhead turrets, all easily done without magnetising, for the same price. It's by far the better option of the two kits.

Alright, Thanks for the information about the Skyray and the turret make. I'l probably get a Skyray then. And why would I want so many devilfish? I normaly run my Firewarriors as 3 groups, 2 of 12 and 1 of 10. Thats all the FireWarriors I got, and the Devilfish is still too expensive, Aspecialy too expensive to use many of them..

The only thing I could recommend is getting more Broadsides. But ATM, I'd hold off and see if we get a new model before getting more. Otherwise you might as well get the FW Broadsides.

Get 2 Skyray boxes and build Hammerheads (Skyray is just bad). Also get some piranhas and/or Stealth suits (they rock now).

Well, in terms of what you should purchase, there are a few choices that would be imminently advisable. Firstly, as others have said, a Skyray box is a great choice. Past that, though no one else seems to have mentioned it, you should really get some Pathfinders. Marker lights are a must have in Tau, but if you don't mind Forgeworld, Tetras are probably a smarter choice.
Finally, I would agree that a Devilfish is a very solid choice. As for why, I have several reasons. First is with the delicious FAQ that just popped up for Disruption Pods. Now, our 5pt little upgrade gives us Shrouded... Which stacks with jink.... Which mean our vehicles essentially have a 3+ save in the open, or 2+ if flatting out or behind ruins. That, I think has made Devilfish a heck of a lot closer to being worth their points.
Secondly, in 6th edition 5/6 missions are objective based. Considering that, you're going to need some way of getting your troops onto objectives. Whilst you COULD foot slog Fire Warriors up there and Infiltrate Kroot, our troops are also very squishy and without transports they aren't difficult to run down with an assault unit or simple shooting. Devilfish will keep your Fire Warriors alive much more reliably, and can speed your troops to an objective near end game when you don't have those annoying Jump Packs to worry about.
There's nothing wrong with Foot Fire Warriors, but I always take 2 Devilfish with a minimum squad in each to 1500pts. You need to have some mobility to back them up.
In any case, those are my reccomendations and my justifications for them. Ultimately it's up to you, though. Pick the units you want and play the style you want. Now, go forth my child of the Greater Good, and bring Victory to the Tau Empire!

Thanks for all the replies. Hmm.. Are the Finecast Pathfinders any good? I guess I could get a Hammerhead and a group of Pathfinders. Is it worth going for a full group of 8 Pathfinders? I tend to roll poorly and thus dont hit as much as I'd like..

I wouldn't buy much. Maybe a hammer head and it sounds like you have the makings for a tight 1500pt army. We will hopefully get a new codex early next year and with it may come new unites you would rather get.

How do your normal play group feel about Forgeworld units? Hands down the most useful markerlight platform is the Tetra - they come in packs of two and each has a 4 shot markerlight, they can be upgraded to BS4 with a targetting array, and you can give one of them a target lock to give you the option of splitting fire or concentrating on one unit. They work out less points than even a minimum size pathfinder unit with devilfish, and are way more effective at marking targets.
I can't stress enough how useful markerlights are - the rest of your army gets exponentially more effective when they're hitting things on 2s due to markerlights.

Merellin wrote:Thanks for all the replies. Hmm.. Are the Finecast Pathfinders any good?
They could be worse, but they're a static unit and once your opponents realize that markerlights are good they tend to die quickly. Forge World Tetras are much better, since they give almost as many markerlights per point but on a fast skimmer platform.
As for the rest, it looks like you have plenty of troops and if you have a good stash of weapons to arm them all properly you've got enough crisis suits for a 1500 point game. So, the three things you should get:
1) Devilfish. They're awesome now that disruption pods give shrouded. You can use them as a transport, but you can also park them in front of a squad, move them out to clear a shot in the movement phase and then flat out move them back in the shooting phase once the unit has fired. And since you moved flat out you now have a 4+ cover save, or 2+ from more than 12" away, meaning there's a very durable transport blocking access to your squishy troops.
2) Broadsides. The more the better. Killing vehicles across the table is a very useful ability to have, and Broadsides do it best. You want to have at least 4-6 of them available, up to the full nine if you play large games frequently.
3) Barracudas. The obvious huge gap in your list is AA, you don't have anything that can shoot at flyers effectively and that's a very bad thing in 6th. A Barracuda or two will do a lot to help (not enough to deal with flyerspam, but that's not all that common), and also gives you some very efficient firepower when you don't have flyers to shoot. They're expensive money-wise, but unfortunately they're your only AA weapon unless you want to bring allies.

I know that we might get a new codex sometime next year, thats why I dont want to buy too much before the codex comes. As to forgeworld, I realy hae no idea.. Nobody in the group uses any forgeworld stuff and we havent realy talked about it.. The reason I havent used markerlights before now is ebcause a group of Pathfinders with devilfish is somewhat expensive in points, As is Markerlight drones..

Fortunately they're official GW rules just like any unit in the codex. If your friends complain, tell them to stop being TFG.
As is Markerlight drones..
Never use marker drones, they're just too expensive for what you get. You're better off just spending those points on more guns.

I agree with pgmason and Peregrine.
If you aren't wanting to buy Forgeworld, however, I would say eight Pathfinders are preferable. If you tend to miss alot; well that's just what Pathfinders are useful for! They're great at boosting BS and stripping cover. They're also one of the few original gaming concepts of the Tau army list in my opinion.
I haven't had the pleasure of trying out the new Finecast Pathfinders, so I can't comment directly, however I imagine that they will be quite reasonable. There are a lot of anti-finecast fanatics out there, but I've never had major problems. It's certainly better than metal.
If you're still not interested in Devilfish, the mandatory transport of Pathfinders may prove quite a drag for you. That's another point for Tetras, in that you aren't required to spend additional points on the Devilfish. It all comes down to your gaming group, though.

As for Anti Air, It isent realy needed in my group. The only aircraft anyone has is the IG player with a single Valkyrie, And it normaly comes in, Drops off troops near the table edge, Fires once or twice, Does nothing, And then hangs arround strying to turn. So aircraft isent a big worry for me.
Next time we meet I'l bring up the Forgeworld discussion and see what everyone says. Also, where do you find the rules for the Tetras?

You'd better hope your IG player never learns about the Vendetta...
Also, where do you find the rules for the Tetras?

Unfortunately the download link is gone from their site until they finish the 6th edition updates, but you can still find it with google. The only thing to add is that it now has two hull points.

hammer heads for sure. broadsides for sure. shield drone conversion kit if you dont have enough/have been proxying.
Love the aegis defense line with my tau. Dont much use devilfish anymore but have at least one or two just in case. Imperial armour models are always great too. Shas'O Ralai, plasma turrets, and a barricuda. Love em.
