So I started collecting and playing 40k again around 3 weeks ago, then last week decided to put myself into a tourny after the local gaming club had someone drop out so it gave me 2 weeks to get 1850 points painted and based!. I have gone a little mad on the buying side, around 8k points of marines at the moment, 1 complete company and two near complete (one being the 1st company). So I had plently to choose from, my list in hindsight could have been better but thats for another part of the forum.

So deciding on the paint job I wanted, I was going to choose the conscreators successor chapter of the Dark Angels, mainly black with a red stripe, tried that and my painting skills couldnt do it justice so I thought I would just create my own paint scheme as I went along that way I can use it as a successor chapter of any of the main ones (except BT and SW really).

AS I said before I have plently of units to paint up so I might well NOT be using this colour scheme again and there is a strong possibility these will be paint stripped at some point, but any guidence or advice you clever lot could give me would be much appericated

I am not going for any painting awards but I at least want to get the points for basic paint scheme and cohesive scheme. I need to put a few more finishing touches on the tac squads, namely purity seals, and I did have a bit of slap dash work on a few of the models (namely the scouts) to get them ready as I have basically only tomorrow night free.

Without further ado, pictures...... Before you slate my non existant painting skills too much please remember this is my first painted army ever, I can take constructive comments as I do understand the need to improve so feel free to give me pointers or point me in the right direction of a tutorial.

Thanks for reading (the missiles batteries you see in front of the scouts are count as Hyperios defence launchers)

Looks like a good start, you've got decent brush control by the looks of it and you'd be amazed at the difference a wash a quick drybrush or highlight would make.

The pics are very blurry so for one, it might be worth practicing your photography skills. From what I can make of the pictures though, they look good for a first attempt. My criticisms would be, most importantly, to thin your paints significantly: the hull of the Dreadnought is a good example, the paint is very thick in places and this can blot out the detail, such as where the Crux decoration is glued on. Also, you can see on the DW Terminators' robes that some areas could use a second or even a third coat. It's better in some schemes to apply several very thin coats rather than one thicker one, you'll end up with a smoother and better finish overall. Once you've done that the next step would be to apply some washes to break up the flat panels of colour. I can see that you've done it on the Drop Pod but on other areas such as the Boltgun and the Master's tabard, a simple wash can really make all the difference. The Hyperios Batteries are a very nice conversion though, good idea

One more thing: the Dreadnought is fitted with an underslung Multi Melta, which is an illegal option. I don't know wherever you're already counting it just as a plain Meltagun but in a game, make sure you just make it clear to your opponent beforehand, otherwise he might accuse you of cheating.

I have already mentioned how bad the pictures are, I was in a bit of a rush before going out and didnt relise until I had posted on here, as I mentioned at the bottom of the post.

In regards to the dread it is in need of stripping as I bought it off ebay, I havent had the time to strip and repaint it as yet but will be done after the tourny I bought the model as in primer, what I didnt relise until after I had got it, it was primer over whatever colour scheme before and primer under that, thats why it looks that thick. But yes I do need to learn to thin the paints as I havent yet.

I have been using Nuln oil for washes but didnt like the effect it had on the red, is there a better wash for that?, I tried drybrushing on some of the marines but at first messed it up by using way too much paint, the second lot was a bit messy as well as to the direction of the drybrushing, if that makes sense.

Yes the dread is fitted with a multi metla as I didnt have a spare melta gun, I doubt anyone would complain as the rules clearly state it is a metla?

Will post up better pictures after the tourny this weekend, I have another large chunk of models to paint after (including 40 assault marines for another tourny next month) so hopefully practicepracticepractice. Where can I find out the best way and tips for watering down the paints?, I mainly use GW paints but have some armypainter ones that seem a lot more watered down then the gw ones as new but the colours are a bit generic.

To water down my GW paints is simply put a brush full of water (dip brush into water) and then swish it around in the cap of the paint pot and use paint from there. Go on youtube and look up one of "The Beasts Of War's" painting tutorials and that will show you what I mean. And good job on the models by the way.

I'd never add water to the actual pot, Pick up a tile and add paint to that then add water.

Painting all of that in 2 weeks is impressive, it takes me about a month or so to get through a squad lol, just remember thin layers, lots of thin layers (i usually do about 4 layers)

Kudos on finishing an army paint job. Most people never manage that (including me). As others have said, a wash will make the army look that much better. I won't lecture about highlighting because I can never be bothered
