Hello,

I was looking for steampunk 40k stuff on the internet and saw a couple of pictures of my own marines linked to from Brass Goggles. So I thought I'd introduce myself and put a couple more up for comment here.

The helmets were made by taking a marine helmet and slicing the face off just after the crest/mohican type thing on top of the helmet. The grilles are lamps carefully cut off the manufactorum kit and stuck to the front, then padded out as necessary with greenstuff. I think there are similar lamps on the land speeder, but the manufactorum is probably the best value, and comes with some good additional stuff.

Since then, I've done some more marines and a few dreadnoughts and tanks. I've also started work on a Grey Knights army themed around Alice in Wonderland, but that's less obviously steampunk. Sorry about my rubbish camera!

These two started off as Black Reach marines:

This is the chaplain, in the style of a Victorian ghost a la Jacob Marley (or at least, that's the idea):

And this is a dreadnought. Again I've tried to carry the diving helmet look across.

I'm not a very good painter but hopefully there should be some conversion ideas in there.

I only have one issue. There are no mustaches of that type in steampunk! Only steamy ones

Nice, but the paint is a tad thick, and the bases are, to be blunt, terrible.

Thanks for the comments. For what it's worth I'm still wrestling with the camera. It's too dark here to take decent daylight pictures, and the artificial lighting washes out the colours, so they're either a black smudge or very cartoony.

The colour scheme is a bit Christmassy - never noticed that before. A lot of brass was required, and the green seemed to compliment it fairly well. The red breastplates are a nod to Victorian uniforms, but I'm not sure it works.

I hate basing. Utterly. I have no idea how to do it properly, or how to improve. I've considered simply covering the entire bases with static grass, which would probably be an improvement. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll post more once I can get some half-decent pictures.

Just pick up some Astrogranite and drybrush it with Terminatus Stone. Quick and effective.

Some creative stuff in there. I love the terminators

The dreadnought looks a little gangly. Sentinel legs can work on a dread, but I find it looks better if you shorten them a little, and model them in a slightly lower, more squat position.

On the painting, the red really doesn't go with the copper and green. If you wanted the Victorian look, I would have gone with more steel and a navy blue instead of the green. As it is, I would trade in the red for bone-white instead.

As far as basing, I think the most popular way to get a table-top quality base is just to use bits of broken cork painted to resemble arid or rocky ground. There's no better place to look for basing materials or advice than in the model Rail Road section of you Local shop or hobby website. They have tons of products now to easily simulate pretty much any environment.

The chest-inlayed barometer/pressure gauge like thing on the dark reaper/Necron/Jump Chappy model is brilliant.

A cleaner paint will of course benefit your modelling skills but I do love the heavy touch in respectfully steampunk style.
