Hey everyone, I'm an Imperial Guard player and I've been waiting for the sanctioned psychers and other characters to be finecasted before getting them but I'm seeing a lot of posts saying finecasts are terrible?

What's the story with that? The detail looks better, it's plastic instead of metal(Hate the metal models, they always look so gunky).. so what's so bad about the finecast?

Use the search function you'll find tons of info. In the meantime, this is copied from another thread.

My experience with fine cast

- Defects in the form of bubbles and thin points are to be expected (this is bad).
- The stuff breaks insanely easy
- This is a total rumor that I have no experience with, but I've heard finecast is damaged by degreasers, which is a prime way to clean off paint and break down super glue fairly quickly.

While I do think some models benefit from being in finecast (like the zoenthrope), that's not enough to make me want to buy it. I also don't like how the stuff is expected to be damaged, and GW now sells that liquid green stuff to fix it. If I'm going to pay a premium for something, I don't expect to have to repair it out of the box, and I don't want to go back to the store to make sure I get a right one, or feel like taking one home without taking it out of the box and inspecting every inch is a requirement. I've never had problems with metal models besides the rare occasion where the mold alignment was bad, but that was simply a matter of sanding. I'm not filling gaping holes and reforming thin pieces like swords and all that.

My advice is take the plunge, get a single figure, see what you think.

It varies. You're nearly guaranteed to get some kind of defect (GW itself has even openly said this) but probably won't get a major one. It's more expensive and much lower quality. But you just deal with it.

It's also been documented that certain models are notorious for constant bad casts. Strengarde from what I've heard I very difficult.

It's seems to be a fluctuating scale really. We get reports of finecast being extremely brittle, some durable and some are flexing and bowing under their own weight. Sounds like their still fooling around with the formula.

My personal opinion is finecast is a great idea. Unfortunately I have a feeling somebody higher up rushed it through even though their research guys were still testing it. End result is we get a product that isn't currently suitable for the type of mass production GW wants. Essentially their trying fit a square peg in a round hole. Their solution is just put more force behind it.

I still suggest you give it a shot. Just don't buy online. Make sure it's in store and you open it in store. Much less headache for you if you get a dud. Best if luck

I have had great luck with all of my finecast models, not a single major defect yet just a few minor air bubbles.

Thanks for the tip guys and sorry for not using the search function.

I suppose I will take the plunge when the models I want are finally fine casted, they haven't bothered to do a lot of the IG it seems yet(at least not the IG I want to buy).

Just as a note the most problematic finecast models seem to be those that were originally metal sculpts which were then converted to finecast, likely because GW didn't redesign the casting properly after switching materials, which cool differently and thus increase the probability of voids and other defects appearing in the product.

The bubble problems with finecast are overblown. The very first models done were full of flaws, it really was horrible.

But the quality has improved to acceptable standards since then.

Now, there are some other issues.

Finecast can break if repeatedly stressed. The models can also melt if they get too hot(such as sitting in a hot car)

Its also harder to get a bend in the model fixed. It requires a hot water bath and then dunking in cold water to make it harden in the new position. Which can be tough to accomplish.

I feel sorry for necron players. Your skinny pieces are garbage in finecast.

I had that same though of all there models even the plastic ones. What are those wip wielding looking models that look like they came out of the matrix. They look like the stand on the base with a thin little wip like tail. Bet those snap of easy.

I try and not buy any Failcast models for the reasons stated above, i just stick to basic plastic models and try to convert anything i cant get.

I've purchased 1 fine-cast unit, Harlequin squad. When I opened the box, one of the coats on the models had an air bubble which had mangled it. When I got a replacement box, one of the harlie's masks was screwed up and another was missing 1/4 it's arm (the "ulna" region). A number of the weapons are also bent. I corrected this largely with hot-water. another problem I had was one of the model's mounting point (a male plug) had been completely covered by it's flashing. I quickly missed this and had cut it off. The last issue was these models is they have trouble supporting their own weight. Since harlequin are modeled to be supported only by thin bits of "cloth" (to be "jumping" any angle beyond the 45 degree mark makes the "cloth" bit slowly bend until it either breaks or the model is laying on the ground. Unfortunately, I expect GW will eventually replace plastic models with resin as well.

TLDR > Finecast is bad and GW should feel bad. It will probably replace plastic over time -_-.

I highly doubt this.
