"Pah", I said on Facebook. My Eldar Dark Reaper firebase is the WEAK part of my 1500 Space Wolf / 500 Eldar army list. It just sits there and gets shot up. I'd rather use my sisters TAU than that. *Grabs Tau codex*...

I think I might have struck on something here, although others must have come up with it by now (looking at warhammer-tau-army.blogspot.com in particular). I never heard of anyone bringing an Etheral before 6th edition (honestly I haven't heard of anyone even playing Tau in the last 3 years), but as it turns out, an Etheral can bring along a BS4 unit of fire warriors for an extra 2 points per model (becomes BS5 after markerlight... hawt damn). The biggest kicker? Unless I missed this being FAQ'd out (and I didn't spot anything in the FAQ), the Honor Guard doesn't count as taking up a force organization chart spot- so yes, I can actually take them. Should be funny to watch opponents target the terminators like crazy and then get blown to pieces by the 36 plasma rifles.

Soooo... I'mma go now... I've gotta go convince my sister to finish the 2 rather nice looking units we had and paint up a third and an Etheral for me. :v

You need to take a XV8 Commander in every Tau army before you can take an Ethereal.

But yes, the Honor Guard is like the bodyguards for the XV8 commander, or most of the other HQs in the other codexs.

Had to be too good to be true (could drop the long fangs I suppose), but I'm not seeing where specifically I have to take an XV8 commander before I get to take an Etheral in the codex. Is that FAQ'd?

EDIT: Found it, VX8 Commander is 1+. Damnit...

It is the little bit where it says 1+ XV8 Commander, Fire Warriors have the same restriction, you have one of each in each army.

Its not so bad. I would alter your list like this:
XV8 Shas'El w/ 2 Marker Drones
2 squads of 12 Firewarriors (no Team Leader)

Marker Drones are more expensive then Markerlights, but when attached to a XV8 they gain the Jetpack type, which makes them relentless. You also don't give up 1 Firewarrior shooting attack.

That gives you another 140 points to play with (and attach some guns to your Crisis Suit!)

Yeah, but by that point I'm better off by ditching the Tau contingent altogether for a different combination of Space Wolves, which is exactly what I didn't want to wind up doing.

Maybe, you could also drop one of the Firewarrior units and grab one hammerhead or 2 Broadsides.

The railguns are a better reason to ally with the Tau then the Firewarriors.

XV88s are an alternative I have considered; but I dislike the idea of running the commander on his own, and I would still like to have all the Pulse Rifles I can get.

"His'urva Au'na (name up for replacement) was an exceptionally radical Etheral, who, against many opinions of other Etherals and Commanders, believed that the Tau were utterly rubbish at hand to hand combat. After having lost an entire unit of soldiers on the Ork controlled Imperial planet of Geisar VI to a surprise attack from a trio of grots, he decided to take matters into his own hands, and was reported as missing in action, along with the surviving 36 fire warriors under his command.

His'urva Au'na reportedly turned up some 19 months later, at his objective- to fight alongside Logan Grimnar, the most brutal, savage and powerful warrior in the galaxy. He wanted to train his soldiers and learn how to instruct other soldiers to fight like Logan and his legendary Space Wolves.

Logan Grimnar, against many expectations, agreed to help this Etheral and his warband. While his chapter was told that it was mostly to annoy the Inquisition, in reality, he was just looking to add a few verses of comedic relief to the utterly colossal song of his deeds. Also, if an Iron Priest could pinch the design of a Pulse Rifle...

where does it say this about ethereals? i have played them quite a few times (to not much success) and no one has ever said anything and it doesn't say in the codex either, ive also checked the FAQs

chaos wulfen as the OP edited in his second post...Commanders are 1+, so you have to have one if you take Tau. So if you are running a Tau force Ethereal can be your second HQ. But taking them as allies you don't have access to an Ethereal.
