This may be a really silly question, but I don't have the rule book at hand.

So say you have a sternguard squad with 5 combi meltas right next to an enemies vechicle and want it dead. Can you fire 1 combi at a time in the same turn until its dead or you run out. Or do you have to say firing this many at the start of the shooting?

Per the BRB, you declare what is firing before making any shots.

Also don't have my book at hand, though. It will be at the first part of the shooting phase section.

You roll your shooting after declaring what weapons you are firing with. So you must declare what mode you are shooting your guns in before you start rolling.

I understand. I've gone through that math in my head with my Sternguards many times!

Best to take a real melta gun or two so that you always have 1 or 2 shots later.
