Good day!

I read BA codex carefully and found out, that I can change the chainsword of almost any sergeant and vanguard veteran with a second pistol. The profit is that i resieve an aditional shot from a model without loss in close combat.

Here I have a dilema, what pistol to take. I see two options: plasma or infernus.
Plasma:
+ range 12"
- Gets Hot!
~ strength 7 ap 2

Infernus:
+ melta
- range 6"
~ strength 8 ap 1

I wourld like to hear your opinion about pros an cons of this idea.

The pistols are really expensive, you need to use them well.

Gets hot is really unlikely to kill with 3+ armour and FNP. However, I would not risk it, as the model is important to its squad. Plus it doesn't add that much more to a squad for the points.

The inf. pistol is just hard to get with its melta range. The one exception is coming from a drop pod.
The other advantage here is being able to play around with combat squads in various fruity ways.

So 5 marines melta and inf. pistol in a drop pod, come a good late objective grabber. Whilst also being good to drop first turn if needs be.
5 marines with 2 meltas and inf pistol. Leaving 5 marines at the back to man a quad gun et cetera is reasonable also.

Honour guard do not need them as 4 meltas are available to them if you need them and vanguard may not even get around to firing their pistols.

Also when dropping death company it is nice to have inf. pistols so they have a unique role first turn.

Edit:wait you asked specifically about the joys of dual pistols. No, do not do it with the honour guard as 4 meltas is enough. If you need the inf. pistol, the bolt pistol does not make that much difference. The only exceptions I can foresee are genestealers where every wound makes a huge difference, or something like boys where the inf. pistol can instant kill the nob and yet the bolt pistol is pretty nifty at killing boyz.

I have to back Mfletch on this one, pistols on BA look cool but for the points they cant really hold up to anything else we have.

The only unit that can really make use of the pitols are the Sanguinary Guard /w Dante -> drop in no scatter pop a tank and eat units.
