I plan to purchase a Battlewagon and an Upgrade Pack for it. Can the Upgrade Pack stuff be applied after the model is finished, or is it supposed to be put on during the main model assembly? My specific concern is the Deffrolla, if that changes the answer any.

I would do it all at once. it will save the hassle of matching the paint colors.

i would do this also. just google magnetizing ork battlewagon and you will get a lot of info.

What's a good place to get magnets? All I can find locally are cheap magnets that aren't very strong.

ebay is a real good source. There are also a few online retails, just search for rare earth magnets. I tend to find though ebay is the best bet for larger (over 100 magnets) orders. It takes a little longer to receive though so you have to weight the cost of wanting it soon versus waiting a week or so.

What Steve2112 said;
I magnetized my the front end and the cannon attachment, so when the parts came in, I just painted up the additional parts, applied some tin to the parts i needed magnetized, and voila.

I had trouble finding magnets that would fit, and did end up needing to shave/cut a lot with a dremmel to get things to fit nicely.

The DeffRolla can definitely be added to an assembled BW, no problem there. In fact for painting purposes, I'd probably assemble and paint it separately anyway.
