Hello there dakka naughts

Me and my friends have been planing on doing a Legaue of legends styled death watch campain missions and have create our own rules for it. The only problem is that we came up with a way to test stealthiness for characters etc with a new stat introduced to units in warhammer 40k.

Basically the way it is done is that it is a stat with a max number of 20 and a minimum level of 4.
Your role 4D6 and constult your stat. If it is higher than your preception stat then you have failed to detect.
We have all the basic ideas down including that "bulky" units will add +1 to preception stats of people trying to detect them and +2 for larger bulk etc.
We have also got a rule down called "Hyper sense" which is basically our version of fearless for preception. Meaning that you always pass preception roles if you have this special rule. So things like genestealers etc would have it.

The problem is however now... what gets what stats.

I mean, we need help determining what would get what stat. We have grouped the races into groups of near equal ability here:

low tier:
Orcs
Necrons
Servitor machines

medium tier:
Humans
Tau

Super human/augmented tier:
Space marines/chaos space marines
Inquisitors
tau battle suits

near to hyper sensitive tier:
Tyranids
Eldar/dark eldar
Demons

What are your thoughts on the numbers? Remembering that someone with perception 20 has a 20/24 chance of success and so on.

I think you need to do it at a smaller level. Scouts should be worst than Space Marines. Overloards should be better than Warriors. Kommandos should be better than Shootas. Etc. Otherwise sounds good. Also, it may be easier to go 1-10 instead of 1-20 as the +1 and +2 really makes little difference on a 1-20 scale. Also, if you are using many of the rules already in place it would fit the traditional 1-10 stat line better. I like the idea though. you should put up the rules! My group my be interested in a LoL style Warhammer game.

I think you really need to understand probabilitiies better. The chances of rolling 21-24 on 4d6 are actually quite small (average score is 14 and it's a bell curve. the chance of a a 24 is 1/1296, the chance of a 23 is 1/324, 22 is 1/144, so on).

What this means is that anybody who has a perception of over 14 is odds on to detect their target, anyone under 14 is unlikely to, and the more you deviate away from 14 the more it becomes likely/unlikely (exponentially).

I'm not a 40k player so I don't know how similar your rules are to the basics, but they seem overly complicated to me.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”
