Subject: Time for the Ultimate Star Wars Flight Sim to come back - X-WING SERIES
I don't know about anyone else, but I really miss an indepth, tactical, tightly made and deep Flight Fight Sim.
X-Wing Alliance, was awesome. I recently got out my Old SIDEWINDER and downloaded the XWA Graphics Upgrade MOD and for a Community produced upgrade it was pretty awesome.
But isn't it time that the X-WING SERIES came back? Half-life is back partially redone and X-Wing vs TIE fighter was a similiar Period (I remember playing it in an MSN sponsored Game Room circa 1998 !!!!!!!!)
Imagine the quality of the Graphics. Imagine the depth with all the extra expanded ships from I,II,III and all the franchaise extra's from SWTOR etc.
If it stole some elements from EVE - esque for freighters and traders to move around but also PVP Faction based (EMPIRE / REBEL / HUTTA / BLACK SUN) using Hyperspace to send you into a Combat zone.
I really think it is time to come back, it would be amazing and probably a good Cash Cow.

I thought X-wing Alliance batted everything out the park.
But you are absolutely correct. Maybe I should say X-Wing Series for clarity. Mea culpa. EDITED

I would prefer Wing Commander. Or a really nice update on Elite. Though I also liked the Renegade Legion flight sim too. But my vote would have to go Wing Commander.
I am the one you warned me of

Never really connected with Wing Commander, maybe it was having to watch Mark Hamill over act...
He was in my bad books till "The Joker" which to me is his greatest triumph, I mean what a Character!

But yes, I would love to see a modern flight sim of either.
Quoted for truth.
TIE Fighter also had a badass campaign and the music was simply epic. Who needs shields, anyways!
Wing Commander ... somehow never really appealed to me. The designs were somehow ... I dunno, uninspired? Average? I only became aware of the series later on, though, so this may be an unfair judgment - but that was how I perceived it. In terms of a sci-fi saga, the setting just offered nothing truly unique to me, and what I heard of its setting wouldn't even fill a single page. Very black and white. "We're the good guys. They are evil space aliens. Weapons free!" Didn't even have the charme that some of the old 80s movies had...
But Elite I remember well. The music! ... and the thrice-damned docking procedures!
I also loved its successor game, "Frontier - Elite II", and was very impressed by it having an entire galaxy to traverse with not only space stations to dock but also fully fleshed out planets and moons to land on, complete with buildings and everything! You had to fly through the atmosphere and approach the spaceport, guided by a landing beam. Awesome. I don't think any other game managed to replicate this massive scale so far.
It also had ships with unique registry numbers on their hulls (certainly not standard for its time), or the possibility to analyse other ships' warp signature to determine their destination - if you had a fast enough engine, you could even jump after them, overtake them, and then prepare an ambush! Oh, and the massive handbook had an entire chapter dedicated to the physics of spaceflight, where you were initiated into the science of gravity and other important stuff. Very educational.
^ game graphics, btw, none of that pre-rendered cinematics gak!

With all due respect, as much as I am a fan of Star Wars, the ultimate flight simulator (for space anyway) was Descent: Freespace II.
it was a completely scaled universe that was unbound by spacial limitations. sure the battles happened in a small section, but when you flew past a capitol ship, it could take you a few minutes to go from nose to tail.

That video looks like a Viper from Battlestar galactica. The problem is that Space shouldn't really be a flight sim, as the top speed cannot be limited but with out it the game becomes unwieldy so it has to be like a flight sim.

yea, there was a microsoft game that got the physics closer, but it was very hard to control.
That ship in particular was a game add on, but it was the only video I could find of actual game play.

I actually made a Facebook status about this yesterday. I cannot think of anything that'd be more fun to play with friends than a big-ass space battle wherein we crush some Rebel scum in our TIEs!

The one thing that instantly springs to mind when thinking about Tie Fighter or X-Wing is the music played when you or the enemy got reinforcements.
It's a small thing but it was awesome.

The thing I loved about X-wing series most, was putting on a good set of Headphones, darkening the lights, and settling in with the Sidewinder for a very immersive experience. It was so fantastically immersive, and X-wing Alliance had such awesome things as Freighters and Auto gun turrets and a massive number of ships of all classes.

I friggin' swear if they remade X-Wing and TIE Fighter, or released the originals on Steam, my life would effectively end as I probably wouldn't leave my computer for a week solid.
Truly, those were two of the best games ever made.
EDIT: Just watched the intro video... holy nostalgia, Batman! Though I think my old PC had a different sound card since the music, while obviously the same melodies, sounded different than what I remember, though I could also be mistaken since I haven't played that game in... I actually don't remember how long. Certainly at least 13 years.

I'm in, 1000 %. One of the first pc games that i fell in love with. Would die for a remake.

You know, it's a funny thing as I've got older I've become a Connoisseur of Video Games. I might have impossibly high standards, but those games that smashed aside even my expectations are worthy. That's why spotty munchkins telling me why a game is great pisses me off, because 99% of them wouldn't know a good game if it fell on their heads. Many of the games I love re-defined the Genre, or re-interpreted a stale genre adding new life into it.
My All time Greats listed but all should be regard as equally scored 96%.
1. X-wing/ Tie fighter/ BOP/ XvT / XWA
2. Elite
3. Half-life
4. Operation Flashpoint
5. Virtua Cop
6. Shogun Total War
7. Super Mario Bros All of them.
8. Super Mario 64.
9. Zelda Link to the Past.
10. Super Mario Kart.
11. Super Monkey Island.
12. Syndicate Wars.
13. Command and Conquer (original only).
14. Total Annhilation.
15. IL2 Sturmovik.
16. Super Smash Bros.
17. Anything produced by RARE for Nintendo in the late 90's.
18. Quake.
19. SIM CITY
20. F-ZERO
Honorable mention to EVE Online.
I'm sure I missed quite a few, but isn't amazing how many of these have spawned endless re-interpretations. Alot of these Games had really tight controls, and responses which makes them very responsive, or so tightly coded they are enormous fun.

I'd love a new Star Wars fighter sim, the last one I played was Rogue Leader on the gamecube and it just wasn't in the same league as X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter and the others. I'd happily settle for the older games being released on Steam and the console marketplaces.
Also, a rebirth of Colony Wars would be nice, though it looks increasingly unlikely that it will happen.

that is an impressive list to be sure. I'd throw in two games IMHO should be on that list:
Shogo Mobile Armored Division and Battlezone 2. 2 of the best games that never got the attention and full support they deserved. EXCELLENT games. just excellent.
EDITED: not Battlefield, Battlezone II.

OMG Forgot about BAttlezone 2, that was pretty epic. The scale of it was breath taking.
I think Mechwarrior isn't far from that list either.
Infact I think we might need to start a thread for this and keep adding in all time greats.
