Hey guys

I have a plinth that I am going to use as a base for my FW thunderhawk. The plan is to use 3 12" m10 threaded rods and screw them into the plinth and then take them off when its not in use.

My question is can you get nuts that are round and not hex as these would fit better in drilled holes. I can only think of riv nuts but not sure if they would work.

not really... but what you could do is use a different type of nut. like the round headed ones..that are like caps. and have the hex around the edge. drill the hole large enough to fit the nut in then fill the hole with epoxy and set the nut in it.

I personally haven't seen what you are looking for but I can offer this:
I don't know what kind of tools you have at your disposal or your mechanical skill, but it would be possible to make your own round nut. You would need a round piece of steel with a diameter and thickness you wanted and all you would have to do it drill and straight tap it.
Alternatively, you could find a machine shop and they would be able to do it for. It would probably cost a lot, though.

You could glue the nut inside the thunderhawk and then drill a hole through the bottom.

Your best bet is to go to a harware store and look at what they have.

Precisely my thought. Go hit the hardware store and grab a Tap and Die set.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

What do you mean by "round", do you mean spherical so you can glue them in at any angle? Or do you mean cylindrical so they slide into the hole easier?

You can get both. You can get nuts which are cylindrical rather than hex in shape, and have a slotted top. I'm sure you can just buy steel or aluminium lugs that are threaded as well.

Though I don't really understand why you want/need them anyway. Just use hex nuts, drill a hole equal to the size necessary for the nut, glue in the nut and then fill the gaps with epoxy or whatever filler you desire. Or are you talking about a locking nut?

Either way, yeah, you can get what you're looking for. Look for threaded tube or slotted round nuts.

EDIT: Also, sleeve nuts and cylindrical nuts are another thing to look our for. People definitely make these things, it's gonna be finding someone who will sell you a couple that will be the challenge, I'm not sure if hardware stores would carry them. Normally when I need something like that, I just make it myself.

Case nuts and knurled nuts would fill your need.

Case nuts are linked to above...knurled below:

You can also pick up a tap and thread anything you want to fit your needs. I know I have gone through and built a socket with a machinable putty (forget the name - was off the shelf at the local hardware store) and then drilled and tapped it in the past to take screws. Works well enough.
