Short and simple, when it is your turn and you're in the movement phase, since you can measure any distance anytime do you think it is allowed/valid to use your flame template as a measuring tool to determine where your unit should move to get the most advantage out of their flamer weapon?
I've done this a couple times in my friendly game and while my buddy didn't have an issue with it (as it is still technically measuring range) it was something that was just a little fuzzy to us on the line of legitimacy.
So, what do you guys think?

It's premeasuring which is allowed again. Nothing states what you can and can't use for premeasuring. I could pull out a rubber chicken and use that if I want to.
If someone has an issue with using the template, easiest solution is to just measure the template and then you know the range.

Why not?
If someone says no, just measure the template, then measure those exact distances...

Well, I really suppose it's just because the idea of measuring is typically with a measuring tape or ruler, it's just something that is ingrained in us (people) from school and the like. I haven't run across anyone that has said "no" but it just felt weird to measure that way.
Also, when you look under "measuring" on page 4 it does say that measuring is with a tape measure or measuring stick, though I'm certain they couldn't have meant that's all you can use.
I suppose I was just curious if others play it like this as well, determining their flame template usage long before the shooting phase.

Heh, although make sure you tell your opponent what you are doing. Sometimes my opponents (especially early in 6th) thought I started shooting.

I once had a guy that was putting his hand down beside his models in 5th as he knew the aprox length of his thumb to middle finger.

Not sure what that has to do with measuring with your template...

RAW, I'm sure someone could make a case against the template. If you include the Introduction in the rules, (I personally believe they begin on p2) the Tape Measure text block on page xiii calls for something with "inches marked on it."
I hope someday to find YouTube video footage of someone calling a TO over and asking that their opponent be disqualified for using a metric only measuring instrument... and then the TO punches them

What would you use that to measure for.
Surely someone would cry foul

You can pre-measure with a template... but if you drastically slow down the game with your obsessive pre-measuring prepare to make people upset and be called out on slow play.
When you boil it down, you should be able to eyeball where to put a flamer to get the most models. It isn't that hard to do. If you actually have to measure over and over to see which will get the most, you will annoy opponents because you are slowing down the game.

Well, that could be called with any measurement though. But ya, obviously this is assuming not slowing down the game. The situation that brought it up was my triarch stalker with heat ray was on the other side of this custom terrain piece that was a long pipeline (think alaska oil pipline) and I wanted to shoot this bike squad that was skirting alongside it under the cover of night fighting and whatnot (lead to them getting a 2+ cover save, we counted the pipeline as a ruin because there were walking platforms on top of it). So I was trying to find out where to place my stalker on my side of the pipeline so that I could still hit multiple models with the flamer. I didn't want to actually move it yet so I measured out 6" for movement and approximated shooting with the flame template from different areas within my movement limit. It sounds long winded here but it was really just a radar sweep with the template and then I moved the model. All in all it was about 10 seconds of checking, if that.

So I probably shouldn't use my homemade measuring tool that is marked off in increments of 25.4 mm?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
