Thanks Not Online, I’m well chuffed how fast and how good it looks for the effort.

Thanks JamesY, I always love an army shot so have to add some whenever I finish a unit. I’m still surprised how well the 2 colour schemes mesh.

Thanks Olthannon, I’m very pleased with it, need some elite troops for it now!
youwashock wrote:I love all of that. Great shots, gobert.

Thanks youwashock, it’s what the Hobby’s all about right?

After no success low bidding on eBay and deciding against spending almost as much on bits as complete squads we’re going for I decided to convert up my Dark Angels Company Veterans to Sternguard. Some of the iconography removal was tricky, but I managed to clean it all up. I’m actually quite pleased how well removing the sword from the chest eagle went and I even managed to find a tiny skull to replace it too .

Not content with these fiddly bits I decided I didn’t have enough Crux Terminatus (I think that’s what it’s called). So I found a few skull crosses from the Venerable Dreadnought kit and filed them thinner and curved their back before softening them with poly cement to fit the shoulder pad curvature

Still not content with their blingness their back packs all got toppers from different banner poles. I think my favourite might be the Blood Angels winged skull with its blood drop removed. The 2nd Edition backpack also had its circular bit at the back removed and replaced with a small small crux terminatus (also from the Ven Dread kit).

Something my normal marines have been lacking of late, they all got a mix of grenades and pouches. Then in terms of load out they all got a Combi weapon with the Sergeant getting a power sword. I even managed to find an array of pointing hands in my Blood Angels bits bag!

Quite a long post with only 1 pic, but I’m pleased with what is essentially a free squad of Sternguard made from bits I had no other use for! They might even get bumped up my painting queue I’ve enjoyed building them so much! That wind be for a while though as we go on holiday to Rhodes for half term

Just look at that! What brilliant setpiece photos, Gobert, well done!

I think painting your vehicles in black has really paid off - they are really complimentary to the bling bling of the Panthers without looking blindingly garish.

Sternguard cobblepot looks good - I really enjoy cobbling together units from leftovers

Thanks Ragsta, I was jealous of others’ scenic photos and decided to get my own together, I’m really happy how they’ve come out and I’m glad others are enjoying them too. I think you’re right about a gold land raider would be a bit garish, they’re not Custodes after all! I’m pleased how the Sternguard/Company Vets turned out, even if my bits supply is now mainly dry.
theCrowe wrote:Oh man! That draider is an absolute beast! Beautiful work as always and the photos are spectacular.

 Ezki wrote:
Wow, that Land Raider turned out amazing!

In my early hobby years when I was jut about to transition to 40k from Warhammer Fantasy, I could not make up my mind on which army to start.
The Land Raider along with the classic Dreadnought were one of the coolest models in my opinion.
It's something about the boxiness, the weaponry and the front hatch, that you simply can't beat.

I remember eyeing them in the catalogs over and over, thinking that I would definitely go with an army that could have multiple Land Raiders (like I could afford them back then).
Then something snapped, and I became a Xenos scum after all.

Anyway, looking at the action shots, especially the first one with the speeder in the background, makes me remember why I thought that way.
Really freaking cool. Thanks for that.

Thanks Ezki, though you’re making me feel my age . This particular mark of Land Raider wasn’t born when I left the hobby for a good long time. I’m actually lucky enough to have one of the Rogue Trader versions in my Blood Angels collection (I’ll get back to repainting them at some point). I do have one of the boxy Dreadnoughts though (plus my brothers Bjorn the fellhanded). I’m glad I could hit you right in the Nostalgias, and I know what you mean about the boxy aesthetic having that je ne sais quoi!

I’ve been away this past week, but did a bit of hobby on Sunday whilst watching the Grand Prix. First things first, I sorted out the bases for the Sternguard/Company Veterans.

I’m dead pleased with the bases too. I took inspiration from ph34rs Imperial Guard where they pieces together multiple Sector Imperialis bases to make bigger unique ones. Whilst I did this on one of the bases I went the other way and cut up some bike bases and put them on some short 32mm bases I had. Really effective and adds a bit of variety for not much extra effort, cheers ph34r!

Whilst I was away a late Birthday present to myself arrived, a box containing Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps along with 2 expansions; Get Away From Her You B***h! & Ultimate Badasses. I’d also received a box of Xenomorphs a few weeks ago, so will have plenty of extras. I got to work building the core set starting with the Colonial Marines, Ripley and Newt

I also built a couple of the Xenomorphs

I think the minis look pretty decent, and I’m looking forward to doing some research as I paint them up, i.e. watching the movies. I’m thinking the Xenomorphs might be an all airbrush job trying to give them some mood lighting type OSL. I’ll try a couple and see if they look awful

Also hiding in the background of the Colonial Marines was the Techmarine kitbash I did a while back. I bought a zinge industries backpack and built that for him. Looks a bit more techy now

Olthannon wrote:Great work on the bases, they will look brilliant in your next army shots!

The marines and xenomorphs are great minis, looking forward to seeing how you paint them.

Thanks Olthannon, I’m hoping they’ll look good all painted up! The Aliens stuff is pretty cool, such a great movie, looking forward to painting them too!
youwashock wrote:Game over, man! Game OVER!

Very interested in seeing those minis painted.

Nuke ‘em from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure! Love the movie, hopefully the game is decent enough to live up to my hype! Need to paint them first though
amazingturtles wrote:Alliums! They do seem like they'll be fun to paint up.

I hope so! Need to figure out how I’m going to do them, which is always an anxiety spike!

Through the week I built a few more Aliens, I think I’m up to 10/36 Xenomorphs now. I’m kind of impressed that they seem to look different despite there only being 4 bodies, 4 tails with 8 arms (4 left, 4 right) and 8 heads. Only the arms are posable, rotating up and down at the shoulder. I reckon I could add some more through decapitating heads and turning them somewhat and shaving down the arm connectors. I also wonder whether I could heat the tails to bend them differently? Sadly no picks of the horde

I went off on a tangent today, whilst waiting for a work meeting on my day off, I decided to paint some Khorney boys. I had originally planned purple for them, but as I was slapping on the metallics I changed my mind. They’ll be red and gold as Khorne intended. I’m not entirely sure what they’re called, but they’re pretty cool. Loads of details and probably a few too many spikes to paint them without bases. I had toyed with getting them square bases, but I’ve also found some round to square movement trays that I might look in to printing. Anyway, they’re coming along nicely even if the Red isn’t as shiny as I’d hoped.

Edit: pic added and apparently they’re Khorne Blood Reavers and Blood Warriors

Tonight I did a bit more on the Khorney boys. Mainly contrast and speed paints on the black and greys. I decided the metal work would be blackened too. Then on to the final steps of painting the good bits

The Reavers are pretty much done, maybe a few details, but pretty much done. The warriors obviously need their god trim painting. I’ll definitely be going with round bases and a printed movement tray.

I know, that murderous rage of Khorne seems to be good for their physique! Contrast seems custom made for such abs too

I managed a base the Khorne lads the other day, they’ll be getting the same treatment as the previous Chaos and the Elven cavalry. All good hot coals start with a basecoat of yellow. Whilst waiting for that to dry I did the good trim on 2 of the Blood Warriors, my Khorne was that time consuming! Still they look much more Khorne already

For next to no effort I think they look pretty decent so far. I’ve also just set my printer going on a unit base for them, hopefully it turns out ok.

I’ve also done a bit more assembly on the Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps sets, getting the Get away from her, you B***h player minis built (the Power Loader was pretty fun)

Worryingly the Xenomorphs infestation of my hobby area is getting worse

It was nice of them to form up in a regiment formation though! Only another 20 more to go

Great job Gobert! me like

They sure do, the meat grinder gets more blood for the blood god! That’s a point, I’ll have to remember to slap plenty of that on these guys!
Olthannon wrote:Some great updates Gobert, looking forward to seeing the aliems all painted. Are you going to give them a gloss over the top?

Thanks Olthannon, yeah I’ll definitely go glossy for the Xenomorphs, though I’ll also try to paint a bit of a shine too. In fact, that’s a point, my only varnish is matte l, so I’ll have to get a can of gloss! Cheers for the nudge!

Last night I did a little more hobby. First up was the movement tray that I printed in the morning and slapped some texture on this afternoon. One good thing about heatwaves is that this stuff dries really quickly! That got a coat of Yriel yellow and I got on with the gold trim. I tidied up a few bits with Black Templar then slapped on Agrax Earthshade over all of the gold. That’s where I left off;

The more I look at them, the more I think the red is a bit dull and not enough contrast. The Agrax outlines helped and mixed nicely with the reactivating red. I also wonder if I should’ve done the red skulls normally? I might throw some blood for the blood go on them and see how that looks.

Through the week I also put together the rest of the player models for Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps.

I also have 16 completed Xenomorphs and the Alien Queen but I forgot to photograph them. Once I’ve built another 12 Xenomorphs I’ll be done with what I have at the moment, but there’s a Hazards and Assets expansion that I’m hoping is re-released shortly, one website says the end of July. Once I have that I’ll get priming everything

Thanks for looking

The Khorne Bloodbound are getting there. Spent a good bit of the F1 drybrushing their hot coals base and unit tray. Then I tidied up their boots with some celestra grey and Black Templar.

I think I’ll have a look at a few bits next time I do some painting, but I’m close to calling them done… not before a good dose of Blood for the Blood God of course!

Here’s proof of the Xenomorphs I said I’d built

I got some black primer too today for them, so will get to them eventually.

How are you going to paint the Xenomorphs? Maybe some iridescent shenanigans?

Yeah, I saw them a little while back and decided to go for the game in the hopes of playing it with Mrs gobert as she’s a big fan of the franchise too. I wanna get them painted up before I do that and since seeing your post I’ve been looking at iridescent paints. I might have to take the plunge and give them a try on these guys, thanks for the idea!

Thanks Cap, it’s been a slog this past couple of weeks, but I’m happy to have the Bloodbound l done now
Not Online!!! wrote:They look great. Maybe a darker shade, they look a tad too pristine?
Also cool xenomorph models.

Yeah, I probably should’ve gone darker with brighter highlights, but I just wasn’t inspired to do much else on them :(
youwashock wrote:That's a lot of bugs. Can't wait to see them painted, especially the queen.
Khorneboys are looking good, too. Awesome basing.

Yeah she’s a big b***h alright! Can’t wait to see Power Loader Ridley squaring up to her either! The basing is probably my favourite bit on these guys (apart from BFTBG which is awesome!)

As you can tell from above I wasn’t really motivated to much more on the Khorne lads. They got some very minimal touch ups and a stippling and dribbling of Blood For The Blood God. At which point I called them done. Not my best work by a long way, but 8 more minis done. Here they are in technicolour:

And some individual shots (apologies, I forgot to trim them)

Last week I was away with work and with those guys nearly done I decided to grab some Tactical Marines I primed a couple of weeks back. While I was away I got their Boltgun metal and purple done. Tonight I did their black areas and their Nuln Oil wash.

The new Nuln, whilst it doesn’t stain nearly as much as the old stuff, it doesn’t seem to darken their recesses quite so much either. I might have to break out the black Templar contrast in some areas. Some of these guys were painted eBay rescues, and in places they’re pretty bad. Still I hope to be able to mask their problems with a shiny new paint job!

Yeah, they’re passable, I’m still in awe at how well their skin tones came out with a quick contrast/speed paint layer.
Thumpingbear wrote:Nice looking Khorne boys gobert. I like the blood on their chest symbols. I think they look a bit silly normally, but bloodied sells the berserker-blood-cultist idea much better. Also really like the bases. Was going to comment that they look like eternally burning fields of coal, then I checked a few posts back and saw that's what you were aiming for, so you nailed it!

Thanks Thumpingbear, I was originally planning a bruised/red for the chesty bits, but forgot and though sod it, I’ll through some blood on there. Makes sense for them to psych themselves up for battle by reopening old wounds I guess! Happy to hear that the bases look like hot coals, it’s super easy and looks pretty good I think!
muette wrote:Man, sometimes you have to decide when to rush a project if you are not feeling it and go to greener fields. Better that and finished than grey! And in this case they are still looking great, so good job!

Definitely, these boys were certainly that and pleased to hear others thing they look good.

More f1 tonight, so I did a fair bit on the Panthers, getting the highlights done on their metallics and tidying up a few panel lines that are a bit gummed up with paint.

Next will be bringing the purple back to liche purple, at chich point I’ll also do a few samples on my test marine. He happens to be a metal Dark Angels Company Vet, so he’ll be a good bit of practice and sampling a couple of ideas I have for their robes. I’ll try to remember to take a few pics of the steps to help me remember.

The Sternguard/Company vets and a few Xenomorphs for a prime of a new black spray I bought. Seems quite nice a finish, hopefully it takes paint well. I also spent a good while making moulds for my Terminators too (just Space Marine Heroes and regular terminators, not Leviathan ones like everyone else). Will check tomorrow how they’ve turned out

Thanks man, contrast and speed paints did the heavy lifting on their muscles, it must’ve been made for these guys. I might’ve made a cheeky start on the vets too.
Not Online!!! wrote:I say whatever you did on the khornate helped out of my persepctive massivly.

Also more fancy panthers is always nice.

Thanks Not Online, glad to have more finished minis. The Panthers are motoring along now too.

I got a bit of that spare time today that Olthannon was on about, it’s pretty rare in this household. Anyways, I used it to throw some purple at a bunch of minis. The tacticals got some on their helmets, shoulder pads and weapon highlights. I also put basecoats down on the Sternguard helmets and shoulder pads, after drilling holes in their necks so I could paint their helmets easier.

The new primer I got seems to work pretty well and doesn’t stink the house out when I bring the minis back inside. In preparation for the Sternguards cloaks I did a few test on my venerable test marine.

The back was a drybrush but I think it just looks a bit too grey, probably as I went to heavy on the final step and not heavy enough on the purple. I think that’s out

These 3 are the real candidates. Top is just layers but using really thinned paints and intermediate mixes for each step. Left hand side (marines right leg) is a textured highlight, with an added initial highlight of Eshin grey before the purple. Right hand side is more normal highlights again with the Eshin grey. I think all 3 have their merits, though I reckon I’ll drop the Eshin in favour of a black and purple mix. I’ll give him another coat of black and try again. When I do I’ll get a better brush out to try to be neater too! What do you guys reckon? Any preference?

youwashock wrote:Love the neck extensions.

For the cloak, the chest looks quite good. It also looks like it takes the longest. I am curious about how the textured highlight would look on the whole thing, though.

Yeah, it’s a good look! I’m also leaning towards the chest style. The hatching looks cool too, but these guys are clean, so I think I need to do smooth layers if I can. I’ll save the rough around the edges look for other forces…
amazingturtles wrote:Space Giraffes! Adeptus Acacia.

I think that the top looks best too, but they're all pretty nice.

love it, Space Giraffes need to be a thing! Smooth gets the vote, so I best get practising.

Well, having missed out on the Lion 1st time around I’ve taken the plunge and got him on pre-order! I might have also gone a bit mad and bought a couple more minis too… Azrael (couldn’t resist another watcher) plus the other half of Indomitus got some love in the form of Illuminor Szeras and a Psychomancer.

To make myself feel less bad about buying more minis I decided to get cracking with the Void Panthers. The Tacticals are now pretty much there. Just the green lenses and purity seals to go, plus their bases of course.

With any luck I’ll get them pretty finished tonight while watching the F1.

Thanks youwashock, overall they look pretty decent, but there are a couple of areas where they’re a bit dodgy. Some of the eye lenses were quite filled by paint and some chest eagles are poorly defined. I think I managed to hide the imperfections pretty well though.

Yeah, I think you’re right. On my phone the background was white but on here they are black. I managed to sneak in some painting today between chores and somehow got quite a bit done; gold, silver and black basecoats followed by a Nuln oil wash;

I’m already enjoying how they look, though the walking chaps have more gold than I’d envisaged. Still, they all got a bit of extra gold with a stripe down the centre of their helmets. I was planning to give the sergeant a gold lined black stripe but as he has a crest already I thought a black face guard would look cool instead.

One thing I’m not yet decided on is whether to give them purple liners on their cloaks. I’m thinking not at the moment as they outers will be highlighted purple anyway.

Managed a bit more whilst watching Quali (actually a good one throughout for the first time in a while). All of the metallics got their highlights.

Not sure they stand out too well in the pic, certainly not as strongly as they do in real life. Next it’ll be tidy up of the blacks and purples before their highlights. Any views on the Sergeants tabard? I’d normally paint them the same way I plan to do their gowns (black with purple highlights) but I think it would get lost like that, so am tempted by green or a grey highlighted black? Maybe a green highlighted black? Or even go crazy with white or red(nice black legion link there)? Let me know what you think

Olthannon wrote:Looking good Gobert, the heads tottering on sticks never fails to bring a smile to my face

Good question about the tabards - you have a nice warm colour palette there so a dark green or crimson could tie into that nicely. Youwashock's idea of a grey could work nicely too. Might have to be a test and see type job?

Yeah, they’re pretty silly, and quite challenging to balance (I had a beer or 2 tonight, so didn’t bother as I would likely have failed ). green is well established in the colour scheme so I’m leaning that way. I might have to do a couple of swatches on my test marine
amazingturtles wrote:I say go for green. Give him some uniqueness!

I thing I’m heading that way. Test marine will have a few patches painted when I get a chance

Another F1 to follow the Verstappen STC Pattern so I made good progress on the Sternguard. Their flow is we’re tidied up a little, then got some Black-Liche Purple, Liche Purple, Liche Purple-AP Uniform Grey, Uniform Grey highlights;

I think the job was accomplished, it reads as black, but with a not too overpowering purple tint. I’m glad I did the black-purple mix first, if softened things a little.

Next will be the usual Panthers steps of highlighting the black before I decide whether to include the tabard on the green list.

Thanks for looking and the tabard discussion!

Either one could be cool.

Thanks jazzy, I was certainly pleased that it works as well on pyjamas as it does tanks! I hadn’t thought of doing straight up purple maybe others in the first company will get some like that. In the end I’ve gone for a black with green highlights.

I’m away this weekend and will be embarking on DIY projects when I get home, so I decided to squeeze in some hobby time. I made a bit more progress on the Sternguard blocking out the purple on shoulder pads and helmet before giving their weapons a purple highlight. I then got the base layers on green bits (eye lenses, belts and purity seals). The green was also used to highlight the sergeants tabard.

I highlighted the The sergeants race plate in purple, but I should probably do it in grey as it blends too much with the rest of the helmet. I’ll try to remember to fix it next time.

Thanks Captain, hopefully I’ll get to finish them soon.

No painting update, but I thought I’d share my recent eBay shenanigans. With all the Firstborn last chance to buy stuff happening I got perhaps a little over eager and splashed some of a recent bonus on this little pile;

The listing suggested about 40 marines and 20 terminators alongside a land speeder and attack bike. Alongside another purchase that’ll give me a squadron of 3 of each! With all of the marines I’ll also be close to a full Void Panthers Company! If that wasn’t enough there are at least 2 Ravenwing bikes, a Dreadnought and I’m pretty sure enough bits to build a rhino. Teenage gobert would be ridiculously jealous at the prospect of owning a full company of Space Marines (I’ll pretty much have a Demi 1st company too ), I’m not too far behind those levels of excitement either. The orange bag is chock full of goodies that I need to explore and catalogue the haul. Suffice to say I’ll be busy expanding the Panthers for some time to come!

No painting updates as my time has been taken up with painting ceilings and walls (I’m nowhere near as fit as i used to be and it’s knackered me!). I might try to sneak some mini-guy painting at the weekend between skirting boards and banister spindles . What I have managed to do is to de-sprue and tally up most of the bits from the massive eBay haul, and it was even more impressive than I thought
74 legs
72 torso backs
81 torso fronts
72 helmeted heads
86 backpacks
144 plain shoulder pads
39 bolt guns
Loads of arms and pouches and purity seals and banner poles
1 attack bike (minis a rider, but I found a spare set of legs
1 Ravenwing bike (plus 2 non-matching halves)
10 vehicle hatch sprues (goodness knows how many rhinos/predators/land raiders this guy had!)
1 complete rhino
1 Dreadnought with multiple weapon choices
13 Assault Terminators
4 Terminators
12 Plasma Cannons
9 (possibly 10) Assault Marines with Jump packs
7 Heavy Bolters
9 Lascannons
4 Multi Meltas
10 Missile Launchers
20 Marine transfer sheets
10 Marine vehicle transfer sheets

Sadly there were no Devastator legs so I might have to buy some of those. I’m already thinking of how I should equip the units. I’ll adjust and split the already built Missile Devs and ensure each squad has 1 of each type, though I’m tempted to do away with the Bolter Marines and do 4 off 5 marine squads of each weapon I have .
I’m thinking each tactical squad should get a different heavy weapon (probably do duplicates of Missile Launchers (already built 2) and Plasma as they look cool.
I’m not sure how to do the Assault squad, I have pretty much enough bits for 7 or 8 bikes, so might sell the jump marines or maybe I keep them and have the bikes as a detachment from a reserve company alongside the Land Speeder and Attack Bike squadrons?
So many marines, so many choices! 41st century problems I suppose . Whatever I choose, I can probably open a bits store to recover some of the costs!

Yeah, it should keep me busy for a while! I forgot to get a pic of the Panther. She’s much bigger than I expected, so will need her own base!
Syro_ wrote:Quite a haul indeed! Wow.

A few years of painting I reckon! Longer probably as I’ll want to paint other things

Decorating has been keeping me busy of late so I’ve had little hobby time but Mrs gobert wanted to do some sewing tonight so I snuck in a quick bit on the Sternguard. I managed to highlight all the black pouches and the chapter symbols with a mix of AP Uniform Grey and VMC German Grey (my Eshin grey seems to have run out), then straight uniform grey which I also used to highlight the purple areas once they had their light purple highlight. All the parchment got Zandri Dust basecoat and seraphim sepia wash. I finished up by doing the first highlight of Emerald green on the Purity seals, rope belts and eye lenses

Oh and looking at the picture I remembered I did uniform grey on the black/green tabard too. That means I just have parchments and second green highlights to do before these guys are finished apart from their bases.

A few days back I did get some time to start work on the massive haul, building up 3 Assault Marines who mostly just needed rebasing and some minor mould line removal. The flamer dude used some old pieces I had from the previous squad and a new torso. I also made the decision that this force won’t have any metal so swapped a metal Heavy Bolter for a plastic Multi Melta.

The Sgts base is repurposed from an ETB Intercessor but the rest are all taking inspiration for ph34r aa they’ve been made from cutting up other Sector Imperialis bases to expand the variations.

I’m away next week so won’t be getting any hobby done, but hopefully will be done with decorating to get cracking with these guys.

Thanks for looking

I know! It’s quite daunting to take on a project of your scale! Any tips?

Since I was tantalisingly close to finishing last night I decided to have another hobby session tonight and finished up the Sternguard. A bright highlight on the greens was followed by multiple high lights on the parchments plus a few layers and washes on their bases and we’re done!

And one more for good luck!

Overall I’m pretty happy how they’ve turned out. They’re not as black as I’d imagined, but they still have enoug to differentiate themselves from the horde of gold and purple. Their good stripes on their helmets look really cool too, I’m glad I went with that. Similarly the black faceplate and green tabard on the sergeant seem to have worked well.

I’ve snapped a few individual and group pics, so I’ll post those in the next few days. I’m feeling the panthers right now so might do something for them next too, but I’m away for the next weekish, so wont get any painting done for a while yet.

Thanks for looking!

Oh boi. Tipps.
Spoiler:
Well, there's some pictures of my penciling. I have a "black-book" which is basically an empty book in which i plan out a force, make a table for what i need. What it costs, what paints i will use. Bit of the background. etc.

Then, i filter that down, say f.e. my AL force and then break the force up in 2-3 bulks. The first bulk is basically a rough skeleton force that if you finish it, can be put on a table and in a display case and look "organic", therefore that bulk is basically mostly a starter + 1-2 things. Often the bigger centerpiece, for my 30k militia it was the malcador and then an infantry core surounding it.

Then i buy the first bulk and don't buy anything else i don't need until it's done --> then stage 2 then --> stage 3.

That is to reign in pile of shames, which make you sluggish and deter attention required to finalise a force. Which believe me, a finished force, even if it just exists in display cases or crates is better than 3 started forces not even getting over the built stage. It's also a money saving meassure. Because we are talking about a GW hobby.... so apply NaCl and consider pricing, suppliers etc. and if you can't replace certain things with 3rd parties which often are a fraction of the cost whilest having often higher quality sadly. Especially on the resin front...

Getting started with it, i work with increments of units regularly according to my list.

F.e. today i am building 5 grenadiers. next day another 5 and then in 4 days i have a full unit built of grenadiers, that will require greenstuff.
Then i greenstuff.

Then i go to the next unit. Sometimes you get into a flow, that you should not stop but always finish an increment.

After you built that bulk, base coat the whole bunch in one go.

Then you start painting, and just like the building stage i work in increments. This time you pick a colour step and then put down the unit, start to finish. --> next unit etc.
If you do that in one sitting because of the flow, great if not, you can still say at the end of it, 1 unit 1 step done.

What happens then normally, is, for me atleast, i got a unit that is basically finished and another one requiring 2 steps to finish and another one that already has it's metal baseline done.
And that motivates.

And that you repeat.

iow, planning and a degree of "small"self-discipline. And that pays off. Considering my own blog which i started mainly to keep me motivated to hobby because i didn't enjoy painting, but it kept me going ontop of being a distraction in a time that wasn't particulary nice for me. And i became decently good at painting ontop of teaching me another very important lession:

I may never reach GD or can compete with some of the genuine hobby artists , but with a simplified enough paintsheme and regular steps, i can paint forces that look not only cohesive but awesome on a table. Add to that my penchant for old school conversions and i got a force that atleast is awesome for my opponents to play against and look at.

TL: DR learn self- discipline by establishing a plan with small enough "chore" steps to keep going.

Also that are probably your best panthers yet, hands down. Where is the orkish gentlemen clapping emote when i need it.

Great tips NotOnline, though I’ve failed already on some of them, mainly the pile of shame one! I’ll be trying to get them all built before starting on the painting, and it’d be good to get the Demi company done first too. I like the idea of a centre piece to build around, so maybe I should paint some vehicles in between squads too?

I’ve re-edited the original post pics as they were a bit dull. I’ve also edited the individual shots too, which of course reveal bits that I missed! : D . First up the Combi-Melta dude

He seems to be missing some writing on his shoulder pad and I forgot to highlight the tiny purity seal on his scroll hanging from his belt. Next the combi-grav dude

I quite like how he’s nonchalantly strolling forward getting ready to lob a grenade like it’s nothing. He still needs the tips of his rope belt painting and the base edges are really shoddy so I might fill those too. Next is the first of the combi-plasma lads

Main thing missing here is the glow on the plasma his pointing mate suffered a similar fate

Pointer also has a lack of writing on his shoulder pad too. Originally I was naming all of my Void Panthers, maybe I need to resurrect that? Last up is the Sergeant;

I think he’s pretty much good to go, though maybe I should do a bit of a glow on his power sword nodule thingy? Oh and I just remembered that I forgot the white dots on their lenses. Anyway, I’ll claim them as done and touch them up when I get the chance. (I might’ve missed some arm cables in green too )

Thanks for looking. Display Board pics to follow

A bit later than planned thanks to being on holiday, here are the pics of the Sternguard on the Panthers’ display board

I’m dead chuffed with them on the display board, though being first company they will move to the new board when that’s finished construction and is painted.

I’ll be back home tonight, and it’s an F1 weekend so I’ll be getting my paint sticks out on Saturday and Sunday I expect. Not sure what I’ll start on, maybe another vehicle for the Panthers, maybe some Blackstone Fortress or Plague Marines or something I’ve forgotten that I’d primed!

Thanks for looking and the comments through all the WIP on these lads

youwashock wrote:Man, those Vets have turned out fantastic. The Sarge is totally awesome.

Yeah, he’s a cool Marine alright. Thinking about it I think he might be the most senior painted Panther to date. I shall have to paint some officers soon

Yesterday was not that day though as I decided to make a start on my Stormtalon last night and tonight I finished the Techmarine pilot and the cockpit

I went with quite a dark red for the Techmarine and tried volumetric highlights on a non-metallic armour. It was quite a quick job, but he looks pretty decent behind the plastic windshield. I’ll have to mask him off before I prime the outside of the flyer. I might also see about printing some chapter icons for it, but I first need to figure out where to place them. I also need to decide what bits to do purple and what to do gold too. Any pointers?

Olthannon wrote:You should be dead chuffed with the vets Gobert because they look excellent. That highlight colour on the black robes was a great idea, looks very mystical. The purple ties in with the secondary colour.

Stormtalon looks great too! My suggestion would be to do something similar to your landspeeder. Though I'm also tempted to say do the wings entirely in gold!

Thanks Olthannon, I am chuffed with the Vet Lads! The robes were definitely the highlight of the minis for me.
You’ll be pleased to hear that the land speeder is my template. I just need to figure out what bits will be black and gold as there’s not as many obvious places for each
Warboss_Waaazag wrote:I really like the simple purple wash on the cockpit interior! Your pilot looks great. Nice job!
As for purple and gold, I suggest places like the recessed plates on the armor like those two spots just outside the cockpit and the forward trim around the missile pods. These spots should get the lesser color (either purple or gold, depending on what the dominate color will be). I also recommend painting the vehicle in the opposite scheme of the rest of your army - purple with gold instead of gold with purple - just to add variety to the visuals of the total. But also because that much gold may look jarring on large, flat surfaces. Just a suggestion, though, do as you will.

Thanks warboss, I do like the purple wash over grey and this one just seemed to work so bad no touch up layers! Result! It was inspired by the inside of Sukuoi aircraft, but with purple to match my army. As for the outside, black will be the primary colour. I like the idea of going purple/gold on the bits by the cockpit, kinda like the white stripe on the Stormhawk on the box.

Ali had planned to prime the Stormtalon by now, but the icon prints didn’t come out right, so I changed tack and made a start on the Aliens: Another Glorious Day In the Corps minis. As suggested on here I tried some colour shift paints from instar. I tried all of them through the airbrush including some with different colours from above and below.

I’m not completely sold right now. It’s kinda cool, but annoyingly the one colour I really thought would work was green and they sold out! I’ve tried Nuln oil wash on some and i think that looks a bit better. I’ve got some more that I plan to dry brush to try to make look glossy. I’ll definitely give all of them some gloss finish too.

Having had success with the airbrush and the instar colour shift paints I decided to crack on sight the human side of the game.

I had mixed results here. My first mistake was not thinning my paint enough, getting lots of splatter. Broken bishop had his paint thinned too much but i think he turned out ok. When I switched to the power loader I ended up in a world of pain. First I figured I had a clog so took it apart, only to not clamp the needle . That created right mess, that lead to another full clean. Annoyingly I ended up getting more clogs, but I got it done in the end and I quite like it:

It’s much paler in real life so closer to the movie at least from the pics I’ve found. For all of these I’ve gone for quite a zenithal look and it seems to work pretty well. I’ll switch to old school hairy sticks for the rest, but it got some good base colours done. I’m looking forward particularly to the camo

Thanks for looking

Techie is riding in style. Love the console. Xenomorphs off to a cool start. I look forward to seeing the colorshift stuff develop.

Yeah, his ride is pretty cool and hopefully his console survives the priming of the outside! As for the colourshift I think I’ve improved the look, but honestly, they seem to be really thin metallics! The website says they’re meant to be additives, so maybe they’ll be better for things like power swords?

Last night I spent some time on the Xenomorphs. They all got a complete Nuln oil wash which seemed to help the definition. To help more I used the spectrum paints to dry brush in a bit of an OSL style which seems to work well. I even did some painted highlights to get an extra sheen. For some I did a second colour (see bottom left) which looks good in pics but a bit messy in real life. I also painted the aliens I missed first time around, i went more traditional with these guys and their queen, going for grey dry brushing followed by a black wash/contrast.

I think they all need to have a gloss finish, so I’ll get some ardcoat on them next all next

Thanks for looking

Olthannon wrote:The aliens look awesome! I bet the gloss varnish will finish the job nicely.

Thanks, I think it’s helped, but it makes it hard to photograph them

Another Grand Prix Sunday spent painting (Sainz was awesome all weekend). The Xenomorphs all got finished up (apart from the few I still haven’t built yet), just getting an all over ardcoat, doubled up on the heads. They’re all nice and shiny now and look pretty decent. From there all that was left was to put some Boltgun Metal on the raised areas of the bases then a bit of black round the rim. I’m not sure whether i should’ve done the top of the rim black too, but I got lazy and decided metallic was ok !

Here’s the pics, starting with the Queen.

The gloss makes her dead hard to photograph, but I think she looks ok, especially given I spent next to no time on her. I probably should’ve added some variation to a few areas and gone harsher on the drybrush highlights as they’re a bit too subtle after the black wash.

Here she is with her warriors

The colourshift ones are impossible to photograph so here’s a few of them all with the Queen

The blues are probably my favourite of the colourshifters

Purple are quite cool too

The Heroes and Grunts got a little attention, nothing exciting just painting their bases black:

This lot will be next on the queue, probably the camo of the Colonial Marines will win out and I’ll save Power Loader Ripley until last, but then again the next mini I finish will be number 100 so maybe I should do her next, or the Stormtalon. Nearly forgot my last pic there, Techy survived the prime!

I also added a few printed Panther icons. Annoyingly I filed them down to get a smooth surface, but might’ve filed them to the same depth as the recessed bits so I might have to do some free hand on them after all!

Thanks for looking

Hehe, the Zoat is pretty old now but she’s such a cool mini. It was one of those colour schemes where I wasn’t sure for quite a while, but really pleased when she was done! Welcome to my plog too
Olthannon wrote:Loving those gribblies! The different colours are excellent. The different colours would look really good on Tyranids or Tzeentch daemons.
The cockpit colours are my favourite by far. That soft purple colour on the controls is ace. Did you get that affect with multiple washes?

Yeah, the colour shift paint would be great in some tzeentch daemons.. might have to add those to my wish list.
I’m really pleased how the cockpit turned out, usually I do a wash of Druchi violet over the primer and it goes all blotchy so needs a bit of grey mixed in to smooth out the panels. This time it was just single wash and it looked great!
muette wrote:Xenomorphs looking properly scary, good job on that!! Good touch with the colour variation.

Tommygun1918 wrote:The grim dark future needs more purple.

It sure does and I’ll be bringing it for some time to come! Welcome to my plog too!

So the next mini to be done will be number 100 for the year so I figured I’d do a special one who will be the Chapter Master for my Void Panthers. He’s the Terminator Captain front the old Start Collecting Space Marines box. He doesn’t come with a helmet option, so he’s the reason for the black vehicles; they mourn his loss after papa nurgle gets him! Remember kids, when purging heretics always bring your helmet! You never know what you’ll catch off them!

As he’s not yet fallen to nurgle his Tactical Dreadnought Armour is in the traditional Void Panthers gold, but since he’s special he got a few intermediate highlights, mixing the Retributor, Liberator and Stormhost together between pure layers. I quite like how it looks, seems a bit smoother than the sometime harsh differences on regular marines layers. I also did the basecoats on the Boltgun Metal bits as well as the Liche Purple and Black. His black parts will end up more purple than the Sternguard did though.

As he’s a special boy, here’s another WIP pic from the back

It’s amazing how quick a mini gets painted when you’re not painting the rest of a group! I might even finish him before I go away with work on Sunday.

Thanks for looking, and don’t forget those helmets!
