So I haven't played 6th ed yet and I am toying with the idea of an Iron Warriors army but instead of going all out on the massive guns and making it an offensive siege force I was looking at putting as many points as I can into fortifications and making it a defensive one. The problem is I have no experience with the bastion kits (nor the rules for defensive structures) and have no idea how I would go about that. The promethuim refinery in the latest white dwarf looks a lot like what I had in mind but well.. price a bit of an issue for me so I don't want it quite that big.
I was wondering just how hard it would be to say take 2 bastion kits and make one that is twice the size and mount a third on top or something. Or to get a landing pad, cut it in half and have those halves as balconies coming out the side.
Also if anyone else has any other ideas I'd love to hear them.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

If your opponents don't mind, you can play with any crazy scenery you like. But to maximise use in serious play, especially tournaments, you'd be wise to make your fortifications match the dimensions and armament of the fortifications which have official rules (currently just the aegis defence line, bastion, skyshield, and fortress of redemption, although I'd be amazed if GW doesn't release more some time).
If money's an issue for you but you want something big, i'd recommend building a counts-as fortress of redemption. As above, so long as it matches closely match the dimensions and armament of the GW version, opponents can't really complain. And as you're Chaos, you can go wild with modelling something very Chaotic and IW-ish.

I did a chaos bastion, it came out pretty good. I'm going to try to put pics up in my P&M Blog.
Bastions are alright, and if you really wanted to go all-out with your idea I would just make a fortress of redemption iron warriors version. You could do it with foam + spackle, just get the dimensions.
You can't really use two bastion kits, it pretty much has to be one, since you can only get one fortification and it needs to be the same as the entry in the rulebook. But it is definitely on the easy side to make fortifications yourself.
Take some allied guard platoon, with lots of barrage weapons, mortars made to look like little weapons emplacements, but the idea would be that you have enough guns (and anti-flyer) on the table to pound the enemy into submission without really needing to move across the table much.

Ok, another question, how many men will a fortress of redemption hold?

I've actually been toying with the idea of a SM fortress and in the BRB it doesn't say you have to use the official kits. It gives dimensions and how many they can hold though. I'm not sure about the height of the bastion but the table says an av14 medium building is 9x9 which I believe the bastion is 6-7x6-7 box. You might be able to play with height/different towers. Also the FoR I believe is 3-4 buildings but anyway it's all in the brb so I thought to mention it.

short answer, far more than you need to put in it.
i
It's got two bunkers, which are medium building so they hold like 30 guys. The battlements on top hold as much as you can fit on there, so it's important to build them to the dimensions of the real thing.
But after using the bastion for a bit, I learned not to put all my dudes in there because it actually can be very bad for them. It's AV 14, sure, but necrons can cause a glancing hit on the guys inside, railguns/demolisher can penetrate easy, and god help you if the building explodes, it's like 3d6 strength 6 hits on your unit.
So all you really need to do is stick the minimum crew in there, with the new 'dex it will be 13 point marines or even cultists, to man the guns and hop out later to grab the objectives. If you have heavy armor elsewhere, the building will be relatively safe because your big guns will be more of a target priority. And now if you play the book missions, there is 1/6 chance that your heavy support units can score!
The awesome thing about the buildings, and the fortress of redemption, is the weapons that come with it, it's really cheap for what it is, and if you keep most of the threat elsewhere people will not shoot at it. It also makes a great LOS blocker, so you can have barrage units in the back firing and nothing except other barrage can hurt them if they can't see them.
If you do a search for a cardstock version of it you will probably find it, you can print that out, put it together, and maybe do some playtesting to got a good idea.

Just remember, the BRB is very clear that models placed on bastions and Forts may NOT overhang the edges or sit on top of walls. You can probably squeeze 6-7 guys on the top of a bastion...unless you have a quad gun up their in which case your looking at maybe 5 guys.
If you model your bastion so you can put a gun and 10 guys up their you will get called on it for "modeling for advantage."

There's no compulsory HB positions. So, is it possible to make four HB on rotating turret, which will fire at 360 degree?
