These guys are so sweet now.

Cheaper and now classified as beasts they can really move. Give them the mark of nurgle they are now T6 and ready to rock. I can see these guys being maxed out in unit size (5) and then just run them up as a serious pain in the ass. They really do seem like a great choice for your FA slot. Anyone care to comment as im keen to hear other peoples opinions about these guys.

Sounds intriguing. I know those T6 necron spiders are a pain to deal with. Fast chaos versions could be fun. Not much can ID them.

But do they compete with the Helldrake is the issue. I don't think they compare with that thing. Maybe above 2k or in situations where you arn't using all 3 FA slots for the Dragon.

They are definitely promoted from worst unit in the game. I think their damage capability and squishiness is a bit of a concern for me but could be nasty with some psychic power support. Also they seem like a great place to put a lord or sorcerer on cav.

Aw, damn.

Means Mandrakes are squarely in the lead in that regard.

180 points for 15 T6 wounds that move really quite fast will be the ticket. The hell turkey seems good but its not for me.

Yeah maybe adding a lord on a bike would be fun...

They're still competing with Bikers, which are silly good in the codex.

They also run 41 bucks a box. That's silly expensive for 2 models.

It seems like the fast attack choise in the Chaos Codex is quite full. I was quite flabergasted to se the spawn go from random movement to getting the beast rules. And you can get them as T6!

However, the bikes are also T6, or can be with nurgle. And as far as I can see they really got a decrease in point cost.

The hell drake is also very nice!

I have not looked so mutch on the jet pack models jet. But the spawn, bikes and the dragon seem very cost eficient.

I don't think the Heldrake is very serious competition for spawns. Fifteen T6 wounds vs. one AV12 hull...I think I know what I'd take. Spawns sound excellent now, especially if they max out at a unit size of 5. They should make for a great hammer to the Cultist/Zombie anvil.

People say it's bad that the fast attack slot has so many good units. I personally think it's a great way of balancing out the army. Lot's of fantastic things in one category, but you can only have so many, so you have to choose. I love that in an army, being spoiled for choice, rather than say, the daemons army, where there is usually 1 fantastic thing, and 2 rubbish things that only a numpty would take.

But I look forward to this. I play nurgle daemons, and if these are both good, and can have a mark of nurgle, they might make perfect allies

People should consider converting or looking at alternate models before buying the plastic kit. Besides being overpriced, for all the options it offers, you're still ultimately stuck with two boringly-similar torsos. Luckily they're spawn, and can look like almost anything you want. So get converting!

Spawn come with tons of extra bits. 2 kits of chaos spawn and 1 kit of ogres is 4 spawn models, 6 ogre models, and enough bits to make 10 spawns that are about the same size.

5 spawns and a helldrake fill very different rolls. I would expect drakes to be popular, but not spammed. With as cheap as ogres are for a box of 6 I think we may see people spamming 3 units of spawn

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Yeah, I don't think the Heldrake is much competition - both are good, but they both do very different things, so different armies will tend to gravitate towards one or the other.

The real competition is the Bikers. However, mixing and matching can be viable - pour the points into one big unit of bikers with an IC on bike/steed accompanying them, and bring along two squads of Spawn for support. The Bikes choose and target and destroy it, while the spawn keep everything else busy until you can switch your attention to other targets.

Here's what I am thinking myself.

Sorceror on bike marked with slaanesh.

5 spawns.

Goal is to get Hysterial Frenzy off on his own unit.

The sorceror is generally fragile and can be in danger in duels, but with now WS 5, T 5 and I5 he's a lot killier and durable.

The +1 atk is redundant on the unit, but if you get the +1 to ini or str, the spawns now hit either the same time as marines, before guards or end up wounding amlost all infantry types of 2s. The sorceror himself becomes a beast in duels. Keep him a warp charge and he can instant kill anything he hits and he'll be hitting before almost anything else.

I remember a game according the 3.5 CSM codes a few years ago. I fielded EC and my enemy TS. He rolled forward converting basic Marines into Spawns. So when he was midfield, he had about 30 Spawns in two big units and he had the models for it (also Fantasy equivalents and whatnot). In front of his units was a big forest and my large EC was waiting behind it. So one unit was surpassing the forest to the left, the other to the right. But they went at different speed. So I charged the faster unit winning cc and the unit fell back. Next turn I did the same to the other unit. I won the game and my opponent (brother of store owner) was upset. It was a great laugh for me! Death to the false Emperor!

By the way, the other day I figured that it was not possible to convert Space Marines (T4 models) into Spawns but other lower creatures.

I'll agree spawns are now better but the FA section is full with better choices I'd say. Fear causing raptors, cheap bikes and of course the flyer which I would expect many people to take due to it being new.

Well a full unit of Spawns led by an HQ that can keep up with their speed is a viable option. The enemy has to deal with it asap. This gives you time to bring your units into position.

Seems like a good idea to get a full squad of Spawns going for cheap.

For extremes, three squads of Spawns led by two HQs, Cultists for objectives, and some shooty support units could be a viable army. Thoughts?
